The Donaldsonville, Louisiana native has won an event at the Baton Rouge facility in each of the past three seasons, slowly accumulating more and more trophies each time he visits. He won there once in 2011, added two more Ironman trophies to his collection last season and now Latino has added a three-win weekend to his career.
Quite frankly there isn’t much left for Latino to conquer at SCR.
Latino swept Super Stock behind the wheel of his 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt and added a win on Saturday in Stock Eliminator in his 2002 Firebird to take home an Ironman triple at the Division 4 season opener on the Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour presented by AMSOIL double-header over the weekend at State Capitol Raceway.
Other winners from the Renegades season opener were Kamron Wright and Ricky Miller (Top Sportsman), Matt Levatino and David Johns (Top Dragster), David Latino (Super Stock), David Latino and Jody Simoneaux (Stock), Jake Levatino and Laramie Reid (Quick Rod), Buddy Wood and Clayton Nance (Super Rod), Mike Frederick and Tommy Costales (Hot Rod), Jackson Core and Cory Gulitti (Junior Master), Bryant Huesers and Ty Casey (Junior Advanced) and Carson Russell (Junior Beginner).
Latino defeated two Louisiana heavy hitters to sweep the Super Stock category with wins over Larry Cummings and Jimmy Hidalgo Jr., while his Stock victory came over Baton Rouge’s own Kenny Doughty. Latino was killer on the tree in all three finals with lights of .005, .018 and .030, essentially making easy work of his three final round opponents. Cummings and Doughty were much later on the tree in their losses, while Hidalgo broke out by -.015.
Other multi-finalists from the Renegades season opener included Hidalgo who visited the Super Stock and Stock finals on Sunday, losing both. Clayton Nance also reached two finals over the weekend, splitting in the Super Rod category.
Kamron Wright highlighted the weekend’s quickest categories by taking over where his father left off. Kamron’s father Glenn had won a race at SCR in each of the past three seasons, and while Glenn did not reach a final over the weekend, Kamron’s win makes it four straight for the Wright family. Wright defeated Matt Crisp behind the wheel of his 2010 GXP.
Matt Levatino and Jake Levatino, the father and son duo from LaPlace, Louisiana, won in Top Dragster and Quick Rod respectively on Saturday. Matt defeated Austin Cowan, while Jake took down Dale Scates.
Renegades Division racers head to San Antonio Raceway for their next IHRA Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour event April 5-7. The event will be run in conjunction with Nitro Jam.
