Farmington Dragway, a 1/8-mile track in Mocksville, N.C., nicknamed “The Farm,” has a rich racing history over a half-century long, first opening in 1963.
The IHRA Summit Sportsman Spectacular races are tailored to the track’s weekly racing programs.
Farmington Dragway features Top (Mod) competitors racing for a $5,000 purse Moser Engineering Saturday and Battle Born Batteries Sunday. Footbrake (No Mod) competitors will be competing for a $2,500 purse on Moser Engineering Saturday and Sunday. Also in action, will be Junior Dragsters and Street.
What do you feel has contributed to Farmington Dragway being such a successful venue?
Collins: “It’s our racers, without them we wouldn’t be a success. I contribute that to their support. They’re not just racers, they’re like family to us.”
What are some things that a casual fan might not know about Farmington Dragway?
Collins: “We have our flea market, our huge Volkswagen show and a really large Mopar show. We have big events other than just drag racing.”
As the track general manager, what is the most rewarding and challenging part of your job?
Collins: “The most rewarding and challenging part is dealing with different people. I enjoy becoming friends with people and making them happy. We can’t make everybody happy, but we want to make sure they know we listen and try to help them.”
There is such a great racing tradition in the Carolinas, whether it’s stock cars, dirt cars or drag racing. What is it about the sport that folks in the area love so much?
Collins: “We have the tradition where we’ve been in business over 50 years. It’s a sport where the whole family can enjoy. We’ve started our team racing where kids can race with their parents, along with the juniors. We try to involve the kids where the whole family comes out and it is a family outing.”
What do the IHRA programs add to the facility? Your track has been successful with the IHRA Summit SuperSeries and at the IHRA Summit Team Finals.
Collins: “The Summit Team Finals is always important to the racers. They compete against each other all year long, then the end of the year, you get to see them work together as a team. To me, the Summit Team Finals and the Summit SuperSeries, having the chance to race in the World Finals at Memphis, that’s a big part of what IHRA does for us. It’s the best program I have seen. You just can’t beat it.”
