It was announced Friday at the PRI Trade Show in Indianapolis that the Mt. Vernon, Ohio track is the newest member of the IHRA family. Track owners Gary Moore Jr. and Angie Wax were looking to bring a strong bracket racing program to Pacemakers Outlaw, which first opened in 1956.
The IHRA and its Summit SuperSeries program fit the bill of what they were looking for. It also fits in nicely of bringing a competitive, yet fun atmosphere to the track.
“The IHRA programs work for us,” Moore said. “We’re old-school. We’re bringing back a lot of the fun events. Everybody has gotten away from what racing is supposed to be.”
In addition to the bracket racing, Pacemakers Outlaw will be one of the host facilities of a No Prep racing series in 2023 along with IHRA-member tracks Dragway 42 and Kuhnle Motorsports Park.
Moore likes to be innovative and he wants the racers to enjoy their time even when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
“If it’s raining, we get the four-wheelers, golf carts and run them down the track. People look at us like we’re crazy, but we want it to be fun,” he said.
The 1/8-mile track with concrete walls is located on 70-plus acres. Much work is being done this winner with concessions, restrooms, all new lighting and timing systems being installed. They want to make it the best facility possible as it brings people off the street and on to the drag strip.
