Weekend Recap, IHRA Summit Sportsman National Championship at US 131 Motorsports Park

MARTIN, Mich. — The International Hot Rod Rod Association (IHRA) Summit Sportsman National Championship returned to action with a double-event weekend and races at US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Mich. and Farmington Dragway in Mocksville, N.C.

Mark Nowicki and Mark Howard earned weekend sweeps in Super Stock and Stock, while Justen Moser became a third-generation IHRA winner in Super Rod to highlight the Michigan action.

Competitors entered the weekend events in the following classes: Top Sportsman, Top Dragster, Super Stock, Stock, Quick Rod, Hot Rod and Junior Dragster. Full results are available here: http://dragstory.com/forum/index.php?board=304.0; a weekend recap of the US 131 action is below:

Top Dragster: Travis Colangelo from Sandusky, Ohio had a near-perfect run by matching his 7.23 dial-in with a 7.236-second run at 183.90 mph and combining it with a .001 reaction time to defeat Brian McHattie from Youngstown, Ohio in the Top Dragster final. McHattie had a 7.363 elasped time on a 7.38 dial-in at 182.41 mph and had a .013 reaction time.

Top Sportsman: Chris Osborn from Oakland, Mich., took top honors in Top Sportsman after Rob Harvischak Jr. from Warren, Ohio red-lighted. Osborn made a 6.934-second pass on a 6.92 dial-in at 199.29 mph with an .084 reaction time. Harvischak finished with an 11.873 pass at 71.99 mph on a 7.47 dial-in.

Quick Rod: Rick Schneider from Rochester Hills, Mich., was just the No. 20 qualifier, but he was spot-on during Quick Rod eliminations. He posted an 8.905 pass at 175.58 mph and had a .017 reaction time. Runner-up Kevin Trusty from Groveport, Ohio finished an 8.889-run at 175.03 mph, and had a solid .012 reaction time.

Super Rod: Justen Moser from Portland, Ind., became a third-generation IHRA winner in Super Rod and his victory came at the same track where his father, Rob, won his first-ever race. Moser was quick off the line with a .002 reaction time paired with 9.913-second pass at 170.91 mph. Runner-up John Sikish from Belmont, Ohio finished with a 9.903-second run at 164.53 mph and had a .025 reaction time.

Hot Rod: Bernie Vanderploeg from Plainwell, Mich., put together a winning effort of a 10.896-second pass at 135.87 mph with a .010 reaction time in the Hot Rod final. Runner-up; Jeff Fisher from New Alexandria, Pa., finished with a 10.856-second elapsed time at 137.99 mph with a .033 reaction time. 

Super Stock: The long drive from Holmes Beach, Fla., was worth it for Mark Nowicki, who captured Super Stock with a 9.673-second pass at 133.97 mph against a 9.66 dial-in with a .018 reaction time. Bobby Rashid from Gross Pointe Woods, Mich., was runner-up with a 9.810 elapsed time at 133.65 mph on a 9.77 dial-in. Rashid left the starting line with a .024 reaction time.

Stock: Mark Howard from Hamilton, Mich. had a 10.985 run at 109.25 mph against a 10.94 dial-in after a .020 reaction time. Parker Devore from Blanchard, Okla., came close to matching his 12.05 dial-in with a 12.069-second pass at 108.04 mph, but was slower at the start with a .047 reaction time.

Junior Dragster: A pair of Michigan racers met in the Junior Dragster final with Jake Foster from White Cloud victorious with an 8.012-second pass at 81.52 mph against an 8.03 dial-in. Trey Goodson from Hartford had the slight edge in reaction time at .011 to .013, but came up just short on the other numbers at 7.981 seconds at 81.58 mph against a 7.91 dial-in.

Top Dragster: Canadian racer Ed Smith from LaSalle, Ontario, prevented Travis Colangelo from Sandusky, Ohio from earning the weekend sweep in Top Dragster. Smith won on a holeshot with a .002 reaction time and combined it with a 7.286-second pass at 183.37 mph against a 7.29 dial-in. Colangelo ran 7.250 seconds at 185.26 mph on a 7.26 dial-in and was .025 with his reaction time.

Top Sportsman: A .002 reaction time was also posted by Top Sportsman winner Mark Sanders from Harrison, Ohio. Sanders put together a run of 7.82 seconds at 174.08 mph against a 7.80 dial-in. Rob Harvischak Jr. from Warren, Ohio was runner-up for a second straight day. Harvischak had a .008 reaction time, and finished with a 7.562-second pass at 176.75 mph against his 7.51 dial-in.

Quick Rod: In a race which both drivers made 8.903-second passes, Kristopher Fields from Carleton, Mich., edged out Gary Fleenor from Port Clinton, Ohio for the Quick Rod title. Fields had a .012 reaction time and ran 161.70 mph. Fleenor was close behind with a .013 reaction time, and had a top speed of 173.81 mph.

Super Rod: It was another close finish in Super Rod where Vernon Rowland from Blanchard, Okla., had a 9.870-second pass at 158.45 mph, with a .015 reaction time. Mike Lagos from Cass City, Mich., had the faster reaction time at .014, but was slightly off with a 9.865 elapsed time on his 154.91 mph run.

Hot Rod: Mike Scherbi from Madison, Ohio finished with a 10.903-second pass at 144.69 mph to defeat Nick Karas from Northfield, Ohio in the Hot Rod final. Karas had a perfect start compared to Scherbi’s .006 reaction time, but lost with an overall package which included a 10.928-second run at 130.43 mph.

Super Stock: Mark Nowicki completed the weekend sweep in Super Stock. The Holmes Beach, Fla., driver had a 9.687-second pass at 137.20 mph  with a .016 reaction time. Andy Kronenbitter from Millersport, Ohio was runner-up after running 9.514 seconds at 136.61 mph with a .028 reaction time.

Stock: It was also a weekend sweep in Stock for Mark Howard, who won again on a holeshot. The Hamilton, Mich. racer had a .003 reaction time and then paired it with a 10.964-second pass at 113.09 mph on a 10.94 dial-in. Runner-up Kevin Zaskowski from Rockford, Mich., left the starting line at .052 and then ran 10.928 seconds at 113.24 mph against a 10.95 dial-in.

Junior Dragster: Trey Goodson from Hartford, Mich., defeated Jake Foster from White Cloud, Mich., in a rematch of the Junior Dragster final from the previous day. Goodson had a perfect start and then went 7.955 seconds at 80.62 mph against a 7.93 dial-in. Foster was solid off the line with a .022 reaction time, and posted an 8.044-second pass at 81.05 mph against an 8.02 dial-in.

Quick 8: David Adkins, also from Hamilton, Mich., took the Quick 8 title, going down the track 6.470 seconds at 223.99 mph with a .124 reaction time. Tom Bailey from Orion, Mich., zoomed down the track in 6.612 seconds at 226.93 mph, but lost with a .266 reaction time.
