Weekend Recap, IHRA Summit Sportsman National Championship at Farmington Dragway

MOCKSVILLE, N.C. - After two events were postponed by weather, the IHRA Summit Sportsman National Championship resumed June 9-11, 2017 with the first double-event weekend of the season.  Sportsman racers competed at Farmington Dragway in Mocksville, N.C., and US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Mich. 

Competitors entered the weekend events in the following classes: Top Sportsman, Top Dragster, Super Stock, Stock, Quick Rod, Super Rod, Hot Rod and Junior Dragster.  Full Farmington Dragway results are available here:  http://dragstory.com/forum/index.php/board,303.0.html; a weekend recap is below:

Saturday, June 10, 2017:

Top Dragster: Ken Batchelor from Leland in the North Carolina mountains defeated Ivey Brannon from Boiling Springs. S.C., when Brannon left the starting line early.  For the record, Batchelor’s winning run was a 5.0517-second pass at 101.33 mph with a .0138 reaction time and a 4.52 dial-in.  Brannon’s losing run was a 4.5618-second pass at 151.21 mph with a -.0035 reaction and a 4.54 dial-in.  

Top Sportsman: South Carolina drivers squared off in the Top Sportsman final with Calvin Snow from Lyman taking the Ironman over Mike Snow from Cowpens with a hole-shot.  Calvin Snow needed just 4.8548 seconds to reach the finish line at 147.93 mph. Mike Snow was quicker but left the starting line later; his final-round run was a 4.8248-second effort at 149.01 mph with a .0308 reaction and a 4.81 dial in.   

Quick Rod: Danny Waters, Jr., from LaGrange, N.C. took home the Quick Rod Ironman.  Waters reached the finish line in 5.7119 seconds at 144.05 mph with a .0079 reaction and a hole-shot win.  Frank Altillio’s 5.7030-second effort at 140.63 mph wasn’t enough due to a .0362 reaction.

Super Rod:  Dave Marcus, Jr., from Sarasota, Fla., raced Jim Perry from Nova, Tenn. in the Super Rod final, and the Florida driver took home the Ironman Trophy.  Marcus posted a 6.4105-second run at 134.45 mph and a nearly perfect .0005 reaction time to win the race over Perry’s 6.4142-second pass at 133.57 mph and a .0080 reaction. 

Hot Rod: The Hot Rod final featured drivers representing the eastern and western parts of North Carolina.  Chris Webb from Four Oaks on the Interstate 95 corridor defeated Bobby Partin from Black Mountain when Partin left the starting line before the green light.  Webb raced to the finish line in 7.0544 seconds at 92.35 mph with a .0445 reaction time.  Partin lit the red light leaving the starting line a half second early and then had problems and slowed to a 12.5815-second elapsed time at 49.66 mph.

Super Stock: Two eastern North Carolina drivers squared off in the Super Stock final with Henderson’s Cam Tingen besting Lumberton’s Cody Phillips.  Tingen posted a 5.7622-second lap at 120.06 mph with a .0395 reaction time and 5.75 dial-in to take out Phillips who recorded a 6.3147-second pass at 107.76 mph with a .0327 reaction and 6.33 dial-in.

Stock: Sanford, N.C. driver Travis Womble won the Stock final over Ray Grice from Aiken, S.C.  Womble’s 6.6116-second effort at 101.37 mph with a .0839 reaction time and 6.60 dial in won the Ironman over Grice’s 8.5682-second run at 78.93 mph with a .0544 reaction time and 8.57 dial-in.

Junior Dragster: Cam Garrett used a .0322-second reaction time to take a hole-shot win over Morgan Wilson from Laurens, S.C. in the Junior Dragster final.  Garrett’s 7.9365-second pass at 81.15 mph with a .0322 reaction time and a 7.90 dial-in was good enough to beat Wilson’s 7.9242-second run at 81.14 mph with a .0641 reaction time and a 7.90 dial-in.

 

Sunday, June 11, 2017:

Top Dragster: IHRA Summit Sportsman National Championship Top Dragster points leader Johnny Tolisano padded his points lead with a Sunday win at Farmington Dragway.  The Jupiter, Fla., driver used a nearly perfect .0061 reaction time on his way to the winner’s circle.  His race-winning run was a 4.5419-second pass at 151.16 mph with a 4.54 dial-in.  Runner-up Ken Batchelor from Leland, N.C., who was looking for a Farmington Dragway weekend double, had to settle for a Saturday win and a Sunday runner-up.  His final round pass was a 4.5067-second effort at 152.75 mph with a .0292 reaction and a 4.50 dial-in. 

Top Sportsman: Paul Mosley, from Inman, S.C., took the Top Sportsman Sunday Ironman at Farmington Dragway when his opponent, Jim Cairnes from Hendersonville, N.C. left the starting line before the green light.  Mosley recorded a 4.8259-second pass at 146.77 mph with a .0178 reaction and 4.84 dial-in.  Cairnes, who left the starting line .0152 seconds early, needed 4.8730 seconds to reach to the finish line at 141.15 mph with a 4.86 dial-in. 

Quick Rod: Danny Waters, Jr., from Lagrange, N.C. did the Farmington Dragway double-dip with Summit Sportsman National Championship wins on both Saturday and Sunday.  Waters posted a 5.6988-second pass at 144.18 mph with a .0093 reaction time.  Runner-Up Kevin Brannon from Boiling Springs, S.C., recorded a 5.6974-second pass at 151.01 mph and a .0077 reaction time. 

Super Rod:  Steve Furr from Harrisburg, N.C. took home the Ironman Trophy in Super Rod.  He used a 6.3976-second pass at 128.83 mph and a .0609 reaction to take out Frank Altillio from Apopka, Fla., and his final-round 6.3886-second run at 127.51 mph and a .0301 reaction time.   

Hot Rod: Michael Harris from Norwood, N.C. raced to the Hot Rod win at Farmington Dragway.  His 6.9938-second effort at 116.73 mph with a .0306 reaction time was good enough to beat Clark Holcomb’s 6.9883-second pass at 119.27 mph with a .0121 reaction time. 

Super Stock: Jeff Longhany from Wade, N.C., took home the Sunday Super Stock Ironman with a 6.2457-second pass at 104 mph with a .0138 reaction time and a 6.21 dial-in. Runner-Up Jim Reynolds from Raleigh, N.C., posted a 5.6685-second run at 122.75 mph with a .0548 reaction time and a 5.65 dial-in.

Stock: Kenneth Stott from Landrum, S.C., won the Sunday Stock final with a 7.1857-second run at 92.61 mph with a .0108 reaction time and a 7.16 dial-in.  Runner-Up Myron Piatek from Holly Hill, Fla., posted a 7.1518-second pass at 94.58 mph with a .0341 reaction time and a 7.12 dial-in.

Junior Dragster: Greenwood, S.C. Junior Dragster driver Logan Westmoreland won the Sunday Ironman in Junior Dragster.  His 9.0283-second pass at 71.15 with a .0159 reaction time and a 8.97 dial-in was good enough to beat Hayden Lambert’s 7.9157-second run at 80.94 mph with a .0704 reaction time and a 7.92 dial-in.
