The historic Indiana track, which opened on Easter Sunday 1960, puts an emphasis on knowing their racers are welcomed and appreciated. Track owners Scott and Dawn Daniels go the extra mile in doing so. Last month, they handed out big checks to all the racers who represented them at the IHRA Summit SuperSeries World Finals presented by Strange Engineering.
The Muncie racers pitted together, just adding to the family atmosphere. Those close bonds included cheering for each other with Muncie racer Gary Blankenship making it to the final round of Sportsman eliminations. Fellow Muncie driver Derek Simon advanced to the semifinals and Shane Daugherty made it to the No Box quarterfinals.
Muncie racers also enjoyed success at the IHRA Division 3 (North Stars) Summit Team Finals as Blankenship won the Sportsman race and the enthusiastic team was recognized for the Best Decorated Grandstand. Pat McCreery (Top) and Blankenship also won Gamblers races.
If you really want to see the dedication to the racers, it can be seen with a visit to the track. They are constantly doing upgrades such as new lighting, new wiring for the timing system and adding showers. Scott Daniels works tirelessly on track prep to ensure their competitors have the best track to race on.
The drag strip’s rich history includes former IHRA President Ted Jones as a track operator and Muncie Dragway hosting the IHRA Northern Nationals in the 1970s.
Fast forward to today and Muncie hosts its popular Night of Fire each July with jet dragsters, jet funny cars and even a jet semi. The huge event also includes Nostalgia cars and plenty of bracket racing. They also host the big-money Moser Engineering Trips 12’s which features $12,000-to-win main events.
In June, Muncie hosted an IHRA Ironman Classic back as part of the Moser Engineering Super Saturday. Wes May (Top), Larry Thacker (Mod), Melissa Durham (Sportsman), Jake Leigh (Junior Major) and Byron Kirkpatrick (Junior Minor) took home the prestigious victories.
Through the IHRA Summit SuperSeries program, Muncie Dragway track champions who represented the track at the World Finals were: McCreery (Top), Stacy Jarrell (Mod), Blankenship (Sportsman) and Addy Jones (Junior Dragster).
Muncie Dragway advertises family fun an eighth-mile at a time and at the end of the day that’s what it’s about. Scott and Dawn Daniels are about providing a great place to race where the competitors can have a good time and truly enjoy themselves.
