K&N, Holley components help make Summit SuperSeries dragster a championship-caliber racecar

Wednesday, 10 September 2014

In just four short weeks the Summit SuperSeries prize dragsters will make their first public appearance at the Summit Racing Equipment World Finals at Memphis International Raceway. With a powerful 572 Big Block Chevy provided by Trick Flow Specialties powering this slick ride, it takes several trusted components to help make this a championship-caliber racecar. That is where great companies like Holly and K&N come into play.

*Over the coming weeks the International Hot Rod Association will be taking an in-depth look at the parts and the people that make the Summit SuperSeries prize package the greatest prize package in all of motorsports. The Summit SuperSeries winners in Top ET, Mod ET and Junior Dragster at the Summit World Finals will each take home an elaborate prize package courtesy of the many great companies that remain dedicated to the grassroots racer. Thank you to all of our great sponsors and friends who help make this incredible program possible*

A quick look at the build

The 2014 "Champion Series" 4 link dragster from TNT Supercars takes shape on the chassis jig. Their 4130 chrome moly chassis design includes a 240" wheelbase on their fully fixtured jig. The chassis is built and certified to advanced E.T. specifications

Build 1

The driver's cage is built to their 24" standard width and utilizes cable and brake line slots designed into the length of the frame rails. TNT Supercars driver's area uses their custom fiberglass seat with seat belt slots along with custom low profile roll cage with helmet bars and roll cage exit assist handles.

The 4-link chassis area is designed with a custom fabricated Ford 9" rear end housing mounted to TNTSC custom anti-roll bars with billet arms. The rear end assembly is mounted to their own 4-link system with 1-1/4 "Pro" chrome moly 4-link tubes and a "Quick link" cross welded bottom 4-link tubes.

The K&N Intake System Controls and Filters the Airflow in one Kit

K&N is widely known for manufacturing High-Flow Air Filters™ and Intake Systems. However, many might not know that K&N's enthusiasm for performance was born out of racing. This obsession for power continues today with in-house development of racing products used in all forms of motorsports competition. A prime example of K&N's dedication to racing is their carbon fiber hood scoops and hood scoop pans.

This is K&N's second-generation composite dragster hood scoop. It features a larger opening and improved aerodynamics over their first generation dragster scoop. K&N built this scoop while keeping in mind the airflow demands of the increasingly larger displacement engines being used in IHRA competition.

K&N's carbon fiber composite hood scoops have an attractive cosmetic appeal and the outstanding stiffness-to-weight ratio that is needed to stay competitive in today's racing industry. Carbon fiber composites have taken the method traditionally associated with fiberglass and perfected it to a precise science with outstanding performance as the result.

Their on-site composite department builds hand-laid carbon fiber components. The lightweight and superior strength of carbon fiber makes it an ideal construction medium for racing applications. Curing is done in an autoclave where both mechanical and chemical processes ensure precision fitment and structural integrity.

The K&N dragster composite hood scoop assembly features a composite scoop pan that is available for various single and dual carburetor designs. The kit features a specially design filter assembly and related mounting hardware.

Holley Generation 3 Ultra Dominator Carburetor will feed the 572 Big Block Chevy

The Holley Gen 3 Ultra Dominator carburetors feature a brand new main body, brand new state-of-the-art calibrations, high-volume HP fuel bowls, and sizes up to 1,475 cfm. The new patent pending GEN 3 main body is 5/16 in. Taller than the previous generation, which is the new height allowed for larger radius air entries that were optimized using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software to deliver smoother flow into new fully machined, big-bore venturi.

Added to the new main body are the improved6061-T6billetaluminummetering blocks. They offer improved durability, true gasket sealing (sealing surface integrity), and are bright dipped anodized for good looks and corrosion protection. The metering blocks are fully adjustable (emulsion bleeds, power valve channel restrictors, and idle feed restrictors).

Also, internal baffling helps to control fuel slosh and minimize float level fluctuations in hard launching or cornering situations, and the fuel shelf is positioned below the needle and seat to greatly minimize fuel aeration and promote more consistent metering. There is a fuel trough designed into the floor of the bowl to route fuel flow directly to the jets and assist in keeping the jets covered by fuel.

Clear sight windows are on both sides of the bowls for easy and safe fuel level adjustments, and a built-in drain plug in the front center of the bowl provides easy access to empty the contents of bowl. Their contoured entry provides smooth fuel flow directly to the needle and seat.

The HP fuel bowls also have material added in key areas (the needle and seat, fuel inlet, and sight window areas) for added strength in demanding race environments and can be plumbed from either side.
