IHRA elite dominate at Summit Pro-Am season finale at Farmington Dragway

Tuesday, 24 September 2013

In the final race of the 2013 IHRA Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour presented by AMSOIL season, many of IHRA’s usual players emerged as winners in the first true doubleheader in the history of Division 9.

A total of 18 drivers walked away with Ironman trophies over the weekend at Farmington Dragway, with only Marvin Dunahoo and Alexcis Schultz doubling up. Dunahoo, from Roanoke, Virginia, won Super Stock both days driving his PFA-1 ’77 Mustang to victory while Schultz, from Woodbridge, Virginia, won twice in the Good Vibrations Junior Dragster Master category.

Other winners from the final Summit Pro-Am race of the season were Ken Ellison and Donny Urban (Top Sportsman), Steve Furr and Wesley Washington Jr. (Top Dragster), Duanhoo (Super Stock), Lee Truell and Gil Carty (Stock), Chad Traylor and Brett Nesbitt (Quick Rod), Donald Webb and Cameron Manuel (Super Rod) and Keith Mayers and Robert Robertson (Hot Rod). Junior Dragster winners were Schultz (Master), Nicholas Furr and Chelsea Brown (Advanced) and Katie Craft and Hunter Moss (Beginner).

Dunahoo

The final race of the season was dominated by IHRA’s elite as 10 former world champions combining for 14 titles reached final rounds over the weekend. It was a mad dash for all racers looking to gain valuable last-minute points in an effort to reach the Summit World Finals in Memphis.

The top three finishers in each Summit Pro-Am division automatically advance to the Summit Racing Equipment Tournament of Champions to be contested at the World Finals next month.

Dunahoo was Farmington’s biggest winner, sweeping the weekend in Super Stock. On a busy, rain-delayed Monday, Dunahoo took care of Rick Nicolau in race one when Nicolau went -.003 red and then wrapped up the busy weekend with the final pass of the day, a close win over Frankie Morris. Morris had the better light, but Dunahoo took it back on the top end with a 6.089 second pass at 112.20 miles per hour on a 6.08 dial, while Morris broke out by -.005.

Nesbitt

Burlington, North Carolina’s Brett Nesbitt reached two finals over the course of the weekend, falling in the finals of race one in Quick Rod to Chad Traylor before edging out defending class champion Corey Manuel later that same day. Nesbitt’s loss to Traylor was one of the closest of the day as Traylor put together a .008 package to Nesbitt’s .011 package. Traylor had a .005 light and ran a 5.703 on a 5.70 dial.

Steve Furr and Donald Webb, two past champions oddly absent from the winner’s circle in 2013, both got back on track in Top Dragster and Super Rod respectively.

Furr won in Good Vibrations Top Dragster on day one over Nick Womack in a close battle of North Carolina’s finest while Webb drove his ’69 Camaro to a win over Scott Lawton who had issues starting his car in the water box.

Manuel

Donny Urban returned to victory lane in Good Vibrations Top Sportsman over the weekend as well as the second winningest driver from 2012 drove his ’06 Cobalt to a win over Mike White.

Alexcis Schultz produced the only other double of the weekend as she drove her dragster to a pair of wins in Good Vibrations Junior Master. Schultz recorded wins over Logan Robbins and Jonathan McCandless to collect the double.

With this past weekend marking the end of the Summit Pro-Am season, points are currently being tabulated and will be posted soon to determine the official field of participants in the 2013 IHRA Summit Racing Equipment Tournament of Champions.
