Custom T’s Motorsports Park, IHRA Agree to Multi-Year Extension

COLONIAL BEACH, VA — Custom T’s Motorsports Park and the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) announced today they have agreed to a multi-year extension of their sanctioning agreement.

The former Colonial Beach Dragway has been owned by legendary grudge racing promoter Larry Thompson since 2018. Thompson, who has been involved in many facets of the sport, is one of the most respected promoters on the East Coast.

He believes the continued partnership with the IHRA shows racers in the Mid-Atlantic area how committed he and his staff are to giving them a great place to race.

“It gives the race track credibility. People feel comfortable coming to an IHRA-sanctioned track,” Thompson said. “They know the track is certified, so that’s one of the biggest things.”

Custom T's

Beyond the sanctioning agreement, Thompson has put a significant financial investment into the facility. His commitment can be seen by all the physical improvements on the 50-acre property.

Work includes fixing all the bad spots on the eighth-mile, repaving the left lane and fixing the bumps. They’ve added more paved parking and worked on the restrooms.

Starting Line

Future plans to make the track wide and to add even more paved parking. The location is terrific for a getaway, only 3 1/2 miles from the second largest beachfront in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

As much about the track improvements, people appreciate the fact that Thompson and staff have a genuine care for the community and the racers.

They have events like “King of the Beach” event where over 300 bicycles are given away to kids in the local area. Other events the track hosts includes “Grudge Racing 4 the Cure” which raises thousands of dollars to fight breast cancer and “Sunday 4 Service” to help first responders.

“We’ve got a benefit race coming up Saturday for the family of a racer who died,” Thompson said. “It’s a big bracket race to help them out.”

Thompson is referring to the Ernest Johnson Memorial Race as part of the Independence Day Shootout on Saturday, July 6. Other fun events coming up soon include Overdrive Live, a Fourth of July pre-party on July 3 and Custom T’s Family Affair with great motorcycle racing on July 12-13.
