IHRA lowers minimum age for JR Race Car Junior Dragster competitors

Friday, 09 January 2015

The IHRA has announced that it has lowered the minimum age for kids eligible to participate in the JR Race Car Junior Dragster program to 7 years old.

JR Race Car Junior Dragster is a popular racing program designed to give young racers an opportunity to compete on the racetrack and helps cultivate future drag racers. Today, JR Race Car Junior Dragster has grown dramatically and is offered at many of the IHRA tracks around the world.

The JR Race Car Junior Dragster program is broken into three divisions, with the Beginner class welcoming racers ages 7 to 9 years of age. The Beginner class is restricted to 11.90 seconds or slower based on either ET dial or heads-up basis. The Advanced class welcomes racers ages 10 to 17, while the IHRA Master class features competitors ages 12 to 17.

“Junior Dragster racing is important to the health of the sport. This great program allows young racers to have an opportunity compete alongside their friends, family and peers on the racetrack and helps cultivate valuable life lessons and a love for the sport of drag racing,” said Scott Gardner, President of IHRA Motorsports. “By lowering the minimum age requirements, we will welcome kids as young as 7 years of age to a fun, safe and exciting environment and set the stage for our future generation of racers.”

The JR Race Car Junior Dragster program is designed to allow youth the opportunity to race against their peers in safe environment in near replicas of the models that the pros drive. Junior may compete through the calendar year of their 18th birthday.

As the IHRA Junior Dragster program continues to grow, the support for the series has grown as well. Just last year, IHRA welcomed JR Race Car, a leading Junior Dragster company based out of Greeley, Colorado, as the Official Junior Dragster of the IHRA. In addition to supporting the series throughout the year, JR Race Car will supply the series with a brand new, turn-key dragster awarded to the winner of the Summit SuperSeries Junior Dragster program at the Summit Racing Equipment World Finals in October.
