Farmington Dragway Has That Down Home Feeling for Racers

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Farmington Dragway is nicknamed “The Farm” and there is certainly a down-home feeling at the Mocksville, N.C. track.

An abundance of great racing is been produced at “The Farm,” which the track’s general manager Sandy Collins attributes to the racers who are considered family. Located among lush greenery and miles of rolling hills, racing is the specialty of “The Farm.” The central North Carolina location also makes it a great place for a flea market, a Volkswagen show, Mopar show and other special events.

Opened in 1963, the 1/8-mile drag strip has hosted thousands of races over the years. The historic track recently renewed its sanctioning agreement with the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA). The IHRA Summit SuperSeries program fits in perfectly with Farmington with the emphasis on grassroots, Sportsman racing.

Collins has been a promoter who looks at the past, present and future of the sport.

“We have the tradition where we’ve been in business over 50 years. It’s a sport where the whole family can enjoy,” Collins said. “We’ve started our team racing where kids can race with their parents, along with the juniors. We try to involve the kids where the whole family comes out and it’s a family outing.”

Collins also likes the IHRA Summit Team Finals program. After the competition is tough throughout the season, the Farmington racers work together to represent the track. Not surprising with the strong contingent of youth racers, Junior Dragster drivers Kristin Brady, Cam Whisnant and Brian Yerger swept Friday and Saturday Gambler’s races and the Race of Champions at the 2020 IHRA Division 9 (Raiders) Summit Team Finals.

Yerger was one of the track’s representatives at the 2020 IHRA Summit SuperSeries World Finals. The other IHRA track champions were: Steven Morrison (Top), Ernie Humes (Mod) and Virginia Bohanna (Sportsman).

The track also boasts a strong motorcycle racing program and other events like the Street Car Flashlight drop race. A couple of the largest events include the annual DoorCarPaooza set for October 23-24 and the annual Junior Dragster Shootout on October 29-30.
