Charlotte, N.C., Area Track Joins IHRA

Wednesday, 22 March 2017

The International Hot Rod Association is back in Race City USA.

Mooresville Dragway and the IHRA have entered into a multi-year sanctioning agreement. The facility, which features a 1/8-mile drag strip, is in Mooresville, N.C., where many of the top NASCAR teams are based.

Donnie Gibbs Jr. of Gibbs Race Cars & Performance Parts is the new owner of the facility with Tony Brown the general manager. Both are veteran racers and they welcome the IHRA’s commitment to the grassroots, Sportsman racer as seen through the sanctioning body’s involvement with ESPN3. The opportunity for a Mooresville Dragway team to qualify for the IHRA Summit SuperSeries Team Finals is also appealing.

“IHRA has a great program in place,” Brown said. “Donnie and I are both racers. He raced Top Sportsman and I’ve run Super Stock, Hot Rod and Top Dragster. The IHRA Summit SuperSeries is such a good program that I can’t see why any track would pass up that opportunity. The racers are our focus and I like how the bracket format puts our guys on a pedestal.”

There is a grand re-opening of the Dragway, featuring the season’s first points race, scheduled for April 29. For more information, please go to https://www.facebook.com/Mooresville-Dragway.
