It was a good way for me to develop relationships with tracks both within the IHRA and outside of our sanction, as well as learn about marketing, event operations and safety. Operating a motorsports event in any capacity or any size has similarities. Since then, through over a decade of Class Racing, National and Divisional Events, TV shows, match racing and the like, I have yet to get back to my roots of arm-drop racing, bikini models and burnout contests. And that’s a shame. Maybe it’s time for things to change around here. What is the toughest part of your job? What is the most rewarding part of your job? I think the toughest times often become the most rewarding. Victoriously finishing an event plagued with inclement weather or equipment breakage for instance. And letting someone vent their frustrations through cursing, pointing, name calling and antics without getting up on your tires and keeping a level head is one of the toughest parts of the job. I have no doubt that someone, someday will get me on the chip but so far, it’s pretty tough to get under my skin. 23
