Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman World Finals Returns to Memphis in 2016

Thursday, 22 October 2015

The International Hot Rod Association™ (IHRA) Summit Tournament of Champions and Summit SuperSeries World Championship events will return to Memphis International Raceway (MIR) in 2016.  The track will host what is collectively known as the Summit Racing Equipment World Finals on October 14-16, 2016.

IHRA will award over $500,000 in cash and prizes during World Finals weekend to sportsman racers through the Summit Pro-Am Tour, Summit Tournament of Champions and Summit SuperSeries.  Racers travel from all of the country to compete for 11 sportsman championships and the updated event will focus solely on them.

“The IHRA is thrilled to be bringing the greatest sportsman World Championship races back to Memphis for a sportsman-only weekend in 2016,” said IHRA Vice President Skooter Peaco.  “When we originally started running these events in Memphis, it was for sportsman racers only and I’m happy we are returning to that format.”

Debuting in 2009, the Summit Tournament of Champions has grown exponentially over the past few years and holds its place as the nation's premier sportsman event. The rules are simple - finish in the top-three in one of the six Summit Pro-Am divisions and qualify for the year-end championship tournament. Once there, all qualified drivers in their respective classes will go head-to-head for the world championship in the following classes: Good Vibrations Top Sportsman, Good Vibrations Top Dragster, Super Stock, Stock, Quick Rod, Super Rod, Hot Rod and Junior Dragster (top-two). http://www.ihra.com/programs/summit-tournament-of-champions

The Summit SuperSeries is comprised of more than 100 IHRA member tracks within regional IHRA divisions. The competition is populated by Sportsman competitors, or ET Bracket Racers, who are the backbone of grassroots drag racing. Top (Box), Mod (No Box) and Junior Dragster compete at participating IHRA tracks in head-to-head competition each week. Each track crowns a Summit SuperSeries track champion who will then move on to race other track champions at the IHRA World Finals for the Summit SuperSeries World Championship.  http://www.ihra.com/superseries-home

“MIR is proud to host this prestigious event that exceeds any program you will see in sportsman racing today,” said Memphis International Raceway General Manager Pam Kendrick.  “The Summit Racing Equipment World Finals brings everyone together to determine who the best-of-the-best is. It is an honor to have it back and we look forward to the event.”

“Memphis has consistently been a wonderful host track,” noted Peaco.  “The management and staff care about this event and the racer experience as much as we do and that’s a huge reason why Memphis is at the top of our list as a host track.”
