Carolina Dragway hosts a wild weekend of Summit Pro-Am action

Tuesday, 27 August 2013

After two weather-forced postponements and another close call with rain this time around, the Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour presented by AMSOIL doubleheader at Carolina Dragway was finally completed over the weekend.

For the most part the weekend was dominated by drivers not in contention for the Division 2 Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour podium, with only Super Stock points leader and current runner-up Michael Crumpler and Robbie Draughon making any real dents out of the Heat Wave Division with a win and a runner-up finish respectively.

Other winners from the doubleheader at Carolina Dragway were Rube Allman and Calvin Snow (Top Sportsman), Michael White and Jim Onda (Top Dragster), Jake Sealey and Michael Crumpler (Super Stock), Kevin Riner and Ricky Pennington (Stock), Cameron Manuel and Mark Miles (Quick Rod), Matt Tankersley and Tracy Barnes (Super Rod) and Joseph Bagwell and Brian Crumpler (Hot Rod). Winner in the Good Vibrations Junior Dragster classes were Paul Charett and Dawson Pauley (Master), Gage Burch and Carlie Dorn (Advanced) and Wallace Wilson (Beginner).

Division 2 Super Stock points leader Michael Crumpler extended that mark with his second final of the season and his first win. Crumpler, out of Elm City, N.C., defeated Cody Phillips in his ’67 Chevy II PEA-2 class car, running a 6.597 on a 6.58 dial at 99.33 mph while Phillips broke out by -.009. The No. 2 man in points, Robbie Draughon, drove his ’69 Camaro to a runner-up finish to Jake Sealey in Race 1.

Drivers currently not in the top three in their division, but making a bid for a podium finish and a potential spot in the Tournament of Champions at the Summit World Finals at Memphis included Steve Dweck and Matt Tankersley.

Dweck came into the race at Carolina Dragway third in the Top Dragster standings, but he managed to reach the finals and quarterfinals to increase his chances of making the TOC field. Dweck’s runner-up finish came at the hands of Michael White who drove his 2011 American dragster to the win on Day 1 with a 4.645 on a 4.63 with a .004 light, while Dweck lost it on the tree with a .072 bulb. In the other Top Dragster final Jim Onda defeated D2 points leader Victor Fera who broke out by -.003 at the stripe. Fera has now visited three finals in the past four D2 races.

In Super Rod fifth place in points coming in Matt Tankersley made his case for the top three with a Day 1 win over Kenny Salter who broke out by -.012. Tankersley had a tremendous pass with a perfect triple zero on the tree and a 6.418 on a 6.40 at 117.15 mph. In the other Super Rod final Tracy Barnes defeated Ernie Knight in one of the closest drag racing contests you will ever see. Both drivers had identical .005 reaction times and Barnes got the win in a double-breakout by one thousandth of a second. Barnes ran a 6.399 on a 6.40 while Knight had a 6.398 on a 6.40.

The only double finalists from the weekend came in Good Vibrations Junior Dragster Beginner and Stock.

Riner had a win over Ray Grace in Race 1 and finished runner-up to Ricky Pennington in Race 2.
