Rowland, Team PCD lead the way at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park Pro-Am

Tuesday, 13 August 2013

Vernon Rowland and Team PCD Graphics were the class of the field at the IHRA’s Northern Nitro Jam at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park over the weekend, reaching four finals in two classes on their way to a solid points day in the final Division 3 race of the season.

Rowland visited three finals by himself, driving his brightly colored PCD Wraps and Graphics sponsored dragster to two finals in Quick Rod with one win and another final in Super Rod in his ’85 Calais. Teammate Chase Huffman added a runner-up in Quick Rod in an all Team PCD final on Saturday.

Other winners from the Nitro Jam and Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour presented by AMSOIL doubleheader were Scott Wasko and John Hochstedler (Top Sportsman), Steve van der Sloot and Erin Staley (Top Dragster), Mark Nowicki and Michael Beard (Super Stock), Chris Stephenson and T.C. Morris (Stock), Rowland and Patrick Forster (Quick Rod), Jacob Elrod and Leo Zynda (Super Rod) and Roy Lister and Doug Wood (Hot Rod).

Winners of U.S. 131 Motorsports Park’s ET program run in conjunction with the Nitro Jam weekend were J.P. Schuster (Top ET), Jeff Green (Mod ET), Don Kinney (Street), Colin Conner (Junior Advanced) and Adam Barr (Junior Beginner).

Team PCD’s lone victory came during Day 1 of the Summit Pro-Am double as Rowland (Blanchard, Okla.) defeated teammate Chase Huffman in a tremendous drag race. Both drivers had identical .001 reaction times with Rowland running an 8.910 second lap at 156.39 miles per hour in the 8.90 index class to Huffman’s 8.999, 152.60 – a breakout of one thousandth of a second at the stripe.

IHRA’s winningest driver Jacob Elrod (Harrod, Ohio) continued adding to his Ironman collection with his fourth win of the year and his 11th victory in the past two seasons.

The defending IHRA Sportsman Driver of the Year reached the Super Rod final on Day 1 against Rowland and used a .009 light and a 9.913, 145.82 pass in the 9.90 class to get the win. Rowland broke out by eight thousandths of a second.

Another driver on a role is Welland, Ontario’s Roy Lister who won his second national event in a row. Lister won the Nitro Jam round at the Grand Bend Motorplex two weeks ago and added another major win in Michigan over divisional points leader Ricky Roe. Roe went -.001 red in the final to hand Lister and his beautiful ’68 Camaro the win.

John Hochstedler (Niles, Mich.) reached two finals in the Good Vibrations Top Sportsman class over the weekend, falling to Scott Wasko in one and edging Mike Jones in the other driving his ’93 Daytona.

Super Stock produced perhaps the most excitement during the weekend as the first, second and third place drivers in points swept the finals. Mark Nowicki (Gaylord, Mich.) in his ’98 Avenger won Day 1 followed by regining world champion Michael Beard (Blacklick, Ohio) in his ’80 Volare who took Day 2. Scott Stillings (Louisville, Ky.) was runner-up in both of those races in his ’99 Grand-Am.
