Monday, 01 July 2013

Defending Division 3 champions Jacob Elrod and Brent Darroch opened the season with wins during the North Stars season opener on the Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour presented by AMSOIL over the weekend at London Dragway in Kentucky.

Elrod, the 2012 Sportsman Driver of the Year and D3 Top Dragster champion, visited two finals in two different classes, continuing his success in his Sunoco sponsored Top Dragster machine by taking a victory over Jeff Thomas in the first of two races during the doubleheader weekend. Darroch, the Division 3 Stock champion and eventual World Champion in the same class, defeated Jason Clark for an important early-season win.

Another IHRA World Champion from 2012 – Hot Rod star Patrick Forster – claimed a win in Quick Rod over the weekend.

The rest of the winners from the Division 3 season opener at London Dragway were Mark Sanders and Rube Allman (Top Sportsman), Elrod and Todd Strefling (Top Dragster), Frankie Morris and Scott Stillings (Super Stock), Darroch and T.C. Morris (Stock), Wade Townsend and Forster (Quick Rod), Pat Martin and Mike Lagos (Super Rod) and James Hinkle and Nick Karas (Hot Rod).

Elrod went four rounds in Good Vibrations Top Dragster on Day 1 ending with a very close win over Jeff Thomas. Thomas got him at the light by five thousandths of a second, but Elrod put together the better package with a.011 light and a 4.615 on a 4.59 at 145.40 miles per hour to take the win. Elrod also runnered-up to Pat Martin in Super Rod.

Defending World Champion Darroch had a big day in one of the toughest fields of the weekend, weaving through five rounds of racing and ending with a win over Jason Clark. Darroch had the better light of the two, but Clark battled back on the top end resulting in a narrow nine thousandths margin of victory in favor of the Pennsylvania native and his ’94 Camaro.

Ohioans Mark Sanders and Rube Allman claimed wins in Good Vibrations Top Sporstman, both times holding Michigan’s Ken Langlois at bay. Langlois had the starting line advantage in both races, but he broke-out against Sanders while Allman ran a near dead-on 4.751 on a 4.75 dial to get the win.

Louisville, Kentucky native Scott Stillings, who swept the Super Stock category at London Dragway last season, continued his dominance at the Kentucky track by adding another win behind the wheel of his ’98 Grand Am over Donna Morris.
