Left Lane: Richard Penland Runs 6.766/203.19, Now #28
Best prior run: 6.739/203.16, Was #28
Right Lane: Rocky Watford Runs 6.765/193.35, Now #27
Best prior run: 6.721/206.29, Was #27
Penland fought the car all the way down the track. Watford was quicker to
1,000 feet, then his car slowed.
Left Lane: Floyd Cheek Runs 6.667/206.67, Now #24
Best prior run: 6.701/193.79, Was #26
Right Lane: Wally Stroupe Runs 6.707/205.82, Now #25
Best prior run: 6.686/207.50, Was #24
Both cars got down the track cleanly, but were too slow.
Left Lane: Joel Bayless Runs 6.680/206.54, Now #25
Best prior run: 6.700/206.80, Was #26
Right Lane: Chuck DeMory Runs 6.641/207.11, Now #23
Best prior run: 6.644/206.26, Was #23
Both run their best elapsed time of the weekend, neither is quick enough to
make the quickest field ever.
Left Lane: Steve Williford Runs 6.569/209.20, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.634/208.55, Was #21
Right Lane: Hank Hill Runs 6.632/209.98, Now #22

Now it's Chris Holbrook on the bubble, again at 6.613.
Left Lane: Doug Kirk Runs 6.572/210.37, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.613/203.89, Was #18
Right Lane: Anthony Paone Runs 6.672/208.46, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.617/210.18, Was #20
Kirk bumps his way back in, putting Holbrook out. Now it's Gary Henry on the
bubble at 6.610 and there are only three cars left in the sixties.
Left Lane: John Bartunek Runs 6.584/207.50, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.604/208.59, Was #15
Right Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.690/207.27, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.616/209.17, Was #19
Spies comes up short. Bartunek toughs it out with the car way left of the
groove, next to the wall, to move into the fifties. Now there are just two sixties
left in the field.
Left Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.622/208.52, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.599/209.20, Was #13
Right Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 6.627/209.04, Now #18

past him in the points if Baker gets to the finals.
Left Lane: Kenny Benso Runs 6.857/208.36, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.595/209.52, Was #12
Right Lane: Gary Henry Runs 6.590/209.75, Now #12

Best prior run: 6.589/205.04, Was #11
Right Lane: Jason Collins Runs 6.590/204.60, Now #13

Right Lane: Elijah Morton Runs 6.607/208.91, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.599/209.10, Was #16
Okay, now how quick can the rest of the field go - all the cars left are
already in the field and Gene Wilson's 6.532 record is in jeopardy. Elijah Morton
was all over the lane, the car very skittish.
Left Lane: Frank Gugliotta Runs 6.603/209.39, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.577/210.31, Was #7
Right Lane: John Konigshofer Runs 6.882/206.83, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.589/210.41, Was #10
Aww, shucks...
Left Lane: Rick Jones Runs 13.127/65.96, Now #6

Right Lane: Carl Baker Runs 7.099/150.65, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.586/210.37, Was #9
Jones' car got up on the tires and turned right, almost crossing the
centerline. Baker got a bit further down the track, then his car veered toward the
centerline.
Left Lane: Jeff Dobbins Runs 6.590/211.59, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.562/212.33, Was #3
Right Lane: Charlie Peppers Runs 6.588/208.52, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.541/210.93, Was #1
Last pair. The record is safe, both cars were very loose in the middle of
their run. That closes qualifying for the "mountain motor" Pro Stocks with a
record field.

and steady, under a light overcast.
Bartunek and Baker met once earlier this
season, Baker the winner. Baker was safely third in the points after qualifying
and could finish second if he can make it to the semifinals. First, however, he
had to get past Bartunek in what promised to be a very close matchup. This was a
close one, the difference being Bartunek's crooked path for the first 300 feet, his
car veering right and then back to the left. Baker's margins: 60ft(-0.005),
330ft(0.011), 660ft(0.019), 1,000ft(0.022). MOV: 0.0245 seconds (approximately 7
feet).

Gugliotta and Konigshofer met once before this year, Konigshofer the winner
that time. This one was very close, Konigshofer leading to 330 feet, then
Gugliotta moving y at half track and holding on for the win. Gugliotta's margins
(negative means he's trailing: 60ft(-0.011), 330 ft(-0.001), 660ft(0.007),
1,000ft(0.015). MOV: 0.0186 seconds (approximately 6 feet).
(W) Pete Berner (Performance Mechanical Mustang)0.451 6.637 203.52
(L) Rick Jones (Neon R/T) 0.496 6.703 206.83
This was the first meeting between Jones and Berner this season. Jones
nailed the tree and then drove away for the win.
(W) Gary Henry (Cavalier) 0.431 6.642 208.23
(L) Doug Kirk (Kirk Trucking Cavalier) 0.473 6.622 208.78
This was the first time Kirk and Henry faced off this year. Henry stole this
one at the tree for a holeshot win. Kirk was closing, but came up about seven feet
short.
(W) Jason Collins (Cougar) 0.436 6.618 210.41
(L) Steve Williford (Williford Farms Cavalier) 0.481 6.624 208.01
This was the first time Williford and Collins raced each other this season.
Both cars moved toward the wall on the launch, then made loose runs down the edge
of the groove. Collins left first and then extended his lead to almost a car
length by the finish line. He will have lane choice against Henry next round.
(W) Jeff Dobbins (Probe) 0.457 6.625 210.11
(L) Kenny Benso (Benso, Inc. Cavalier) 0.519 6.610 209.10
Dobbins and Benso have not faced each other this year. Dobbins got a huge
holeshot, then held on for the win. His margins: 60ft(0.050), 330ft(0.055),
660ft(0.044), 1,000ft(0.044). MOV: 0.0472 seconds (approximately 14 feet).
Dobbins will have lane choice against Jones in round two.
(W) Brian Gahm (NAPA Tools & Equip. Mustang) 0.459 6.572 209.92
(L) Dwayne Rice (Moser Engineering Grand Am) 0.488 6.685 208.20
This was the first time Rice and Gahm have met this year. Gahm showed how he
locked up the championship with a good light and a dominating run, winning by about
two car lengths.
(W) Elijah Morton (New Century Homes Mustang) 0.512 6.640 207.85
(L) Charlie Peppers (Whaley Speed & Machine Must0.507 6.744 202.91

Neither had a reaction time to brag about, then Peppers' car let him down, falling
farther behind at every increment. Morton pulled off the big upset of the round
and will have lane choice against Baker next round.

2:24 PM It's 75 degrees, 61 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.00
and steady, under a light overcast.
Baker and Morton met just one other time
this season, in Martin, Mich. Morton won that one to go to his second final round
of the year. It was a good drag race, but Baker left first and slowly pulled ahead
for the win. That puts Baker into second place in the points, ahead of John
Montecalvo. Baker's margins: 60ft(0.000), 330ft(0.004), 660ft(0.017),
1,000ft(0.025). MOV: 0.0315 seconds (approximately 10 feet).
(W) Jeff Dobbins (Probe) 0.436 6.626 210.70
(L) Pete Berner (Performance Mechanical Mustang)0.543 6.715 198.82
This was the first time Dobbins and Berner raced each other this year.
Dobbins grabbed a huge holeshot and the drove away from Henry for an easy
win.
(W) Jason Collins (Cougar) 0.455 6.632 210.05
(L) Gary Henry (Cavalier) 0.472 6.663 207.82
This was the first meeting of the year for Henry and Collins. Collins took
the early lead and then did a good job of driving a loose race car to the stripe.
MOV: 0.0483 seconds (approximately 15 feet). Collins will have lane choice against
Baker in the semifinals.
(W) Brian Gahm (NAPA Tools & Equip. Mustang) 0.453 6.619 209.01
(L) Frank Gugliotta (Yoak Racing Probe) 0.458 6.649 207.85
These two had not met this season, Gugliotta only making the field twice
prior to this event and not getting past the first round in either race. He made a
good race of it, leaving right with Gahm and pacing him most of the way down the
track. Gahm won, but Gugliotta has nothing to be ashamed of for this effort.
Gahm's margins: 60ft(0.018), 330 ft(0.018), 660ft(0.022), 1,000ft(0.028). MOV:
0.0357 seconds (approximately 11 feet). Gahm will have l ane choice against

(W) Carl Baker (Summit Racing Cougar) 0.471 6.630 208.20
(L) Jason Collins (Cougar) 0.458 7.477 134.82
3:59 PM Oops, a recheck of the points showed that Baker needed to go to the
finals to move into second place in the points, his second-round win leaving Baker
still nine points behind John Montecalvo.
He and Collins met once earlier
this year, Baker winning that one, in the first round at Shreveport. This was a
close race at the start, but Collins' car got severely out of shape in the middle
of the run and Baker is now really second in the points.
(W) Jeff Dobbins (Probe) 0.453 6.618 209.82
(L) Brian Gahm (NAPA Tools & Equip. Mustang) 0.479 6.620 208.36
Gahm was 2-1 against Dobbins in prior races this year, defeating Dobbins in
the final round at Grand Bend and the semifinals at Epping. On the other hand,
Dobbins handed Gahm his only first-round loss of the season, at Toronto. This was
a very close drag race, Dobbins with the starting line advantage and Gahm making up
most of it by the 60-foot timer. But Dobbins was strong enough to extend that
small edge slightly enroute to an upset victory. Dobbins' margins: 60ft(0.010),
330ft(0.013), 660ft(0.020), 1,000ft(0.023). MOV: 0.0286 seconds (approximately 9

Baker and Dobbins have raced each
other twice in earlier races this year, Dobbins winning in the final round at
Virginia and Baker winning in the first round at Martin. This was a good
old-fashioned drag race, the two leaving together. Baker made a hard move early,
then they were welded together the rest of the way down the track. Baker's
incremental margins: 60ft(0.027), 330 ft(0.036), 660ft(0.039), 1,000ft(0.032).
