Results for Qualifying 1
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - ROCKINGHAM-2 - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Screamin' Eagle
Nitro Harley-Davidson at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, Seventh annual
CARQUEST Auto Parts World Finals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time, top speed,
and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Steve Stordeur Runs 6.859/215.51, Now #3
Right Lane: Robert Stewart Runs 8.971/101.41, Now #4
Stordeur's bike shook the rear tire very hard and bounced the back end of the
motorcycle. He got off the throttle to get things back under control, then got back
on it. Stewart got loose and had to back off the throttle.
Left Lane: Ray Price Runs 6.331/219.83, Now #1
Right Lane: Joe Scatella No Time, Now #6
Price had a very strong run that was a new track record here at Rockingham.
In the other lane, Scatella veered to the left and rode along the center line from
the 300 foot mark to about 600 feet. He fought hard to stay in his lane but could
not stay on the right side of the center line and crossed over, taking out the foam
block at 660 feet.
Left Lane: Mark Conner Runs 6.632/213.37, Now #3
Right Lane: Mike Romine Runs 6.684/202.88, Now #5
This was a pair of clean, unspectacular runs.
Left Lane: Mark Cox Runs 6.450/197.05, Now #2
Right Lane: Steve Moore No Time, Now #9
The engines on both motorcycles stumbled as soon as they came off the
starting line. Cox was able to get back on the throttle at 60 feet and salvage this
round with a run that put him in the number two spot for now. The engine on Moore's
bike just died and he was not able to finish the run.
Left Lane: Jay Turner Runs 6.984/178.83, Now #8
Right Lane: Doug Vancil Runs 7.373/127.87, Now #9
Nothing appeared wrong with either ride but neither Turner or Vancil had much
speed in this run.

This round does
not count toward qualifying, by the way. Vancil had a big holeshot and led to half

slowed, Mancuso going by for a surprisingly easy win.

(L) Mike Romine (Chromatic Inc '01 Weekend) 0.466 (Broke)

Eagle Nitro Harley-Davidson Shootout. The temperature was 61 degrees at 77 percent
humidity with a barometric pressure of 30.07 and steady. Both riders had strong
runs. Stordeur drifted a bit toward the right and the center line and slowed a bit
to get back into the groove. Mancuso went right down the middle.

Right Lane: Joe Scatella Runs 6.962/179.64, Now #9
Best prior run: 7.110/191.08, Was #11
Scatella was not in the field and needed to beat the bump time of 6.711
seconds to push Doug Vancil from the field and get him himself. Scatella's bike was
leaning over and dragging the header as Scatella came toward the end of the track.
When he shut the engine down, the header bit into the track and he veered toward
the wall. He scraped the wall but kept the bike up on two wheels. Conner had a
clean run that did not affect his spot in the order.
Left Lane: Mark Cox Runs 6.440/209.39, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.450/197.05, Was #3
Right Lane: Doug Vancil Runs 6.411/205.94, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.711/211.66, Was #8
Vancil was on the bubble before this run but he had moved up five places in

Results for Elimination Round 1
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in
Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley-Davidson at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series,
Seventh annual CARQUEST Auto Parts World Finals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Steve Stordeur (Mancuso Racing '01 Weekend) 0.510 6.430 219.19
(L) Jamie Emery (A&W Mobile '00 Dixie) 0.514 6.719 193.24
12:19 PM - The air temperature was 72 degrees at 73 percent humidity. The
barometric pressure was 30.03 under overcast skies. Doug Vancil came into this
round having effectively clinched the championship during qualifying this weekend.
The only way that Steve Stordeur could possibly win the season championship would
be if Vancil lost in the first round and took an oildown penalty. At the same time,
Stordeur would have to win this event and set a national record in the process. If
Vancil did not oil down and went out in the first round, the best Stordeur could do
would be to win this event and tie for the championship points. But Vancil would
still be the season champion based on the second tie-breaker because he has more
final round appearances this season. This is the second Screamin' Eagle Nitro
Harley-Davidson race of the year for Emery. In his first race, at Budd's Creek three weeks
ago, he lost in the first round to Doug Vancil. Stordeur came into this race with
an outside chance of winning the season championship. He has made it to the finals
five times this season and won four of them. Stordeur had a slightly better start
and stayed ahead for the entire quarter mile. Stordeur's margins: 60ft(0.012), 330
ft(0.051), 660ft(0.110), 1,000ft(0.197). Margin of victory: 0.2937 seconds
(approximately 83 feet).
(W) Mark Cox (Bojangles '00 Weekend) 0.459 6.537 167.55
(L) Johnny Mancuso (Mancuso H-D '00 Weekend) 0.477 (Broke)
This was the first time that Cox and Mancuso have raced each other this
season. Cox has made it into eliminations six times this season before this
weekend. In five of the six races for which he qualified, he lost in the first
round. He had a first round win over Ray Price at Epping but lost to Stordeur in
the second round. Mancuso has qualified for all 11 previous races this season and
has one win in his only trip to the finals. He made it past the first round six
other times and lost all six times. Mancuso came off the starting line hard and his
bike just died. He coasted to about 600 feet then pulled over to the wall. Cox had
a clean run but gave up lane choice to Stordeur in the next round.
(W) Ray Price (Ray Price H-D '02 Dixie) 0.548 6.344 213.43
(L) Mark Conner ('01 Puppett) 0.512 8.644 147.12
Conner and Price have meet three times this season before today, with Price
getting the win all three times. Conner has made it to the finals twice this year,
losing once to Stordeur and once to Vancil. Price has gone to the finals five times
this year without a win, winning at Shreveport when he beat Mike Romine. He lost
three times to Vancil in the finals and once to Mancuso. Conner smoked the tire for
the first 100 feet and never got up to speed. Price had a very nice run and had the
quickest ET of the round with Vancil and Romine yet to run.
(W) Mike Romine (Chromatic Inc '01 Weekend) 0.495 6.522 213.27
(L) Doug Vancil (Vance & Hines '00 Weekend) 0.517 7.466 125.65
Romine and Vancil have raced twice before this year with Vancil getting the
win both times. Vancil has been to the final round eight times this year, beating
Price three times, Stordeur one time and Conner once. All three of his final round
losses came at the hands of Stordeur. Romine has one final round appearance this
year, when he lost to Price at Shreveport. Vancil had the quicker light but Romine
was ahead at 60 feet. Vancil made up the difference and was ahead at 330 feet when
he started to slow. Romine caught him and passed to take the win. Even though he
lost, Vancil will still get the season championship. The best Stordeur can do -- if
he wins today -- is tie in the points. If that happens, Vancil will win the
championship on the second tie-breaker. Romine gave up lane choice to Price in the
next round. Romine's margins: 60ft(0.015), 330 ft(-0.019), 660ft(0.076),
1,000ft(0.395). Margin of victory: 0.9668 seconds (more than 100 feet).

(L) Steve Stordeur (Mancuso Racing '01 Weekend) 0.500 12.939 60.40
3:49 PM - The air temperature was 77 degrees at 61-percent humidity at the
start of this round of eliminations. The barometric pressure was 29.97 and steady
under overcast but clearing skies. In the two other times that these two riders met
this year, Stordeur beat Cox in the first round at Richmond and in the second round
at Epping. This is the second time this season that Cox made it past the first
round. Cox had the better light and even though his ride got a little rough at
mid-track, he had an easy win because Stordeur lost power at mid track.
(W) Ray Price (Ray Price H-D '02 Dixie) 0.583 6.387 219.26
(L) Mike Romine (Chromatic Inc '01 Weekend) 0.473 6.589 206.16
Price beat Romine in the final round at Shreveport for his only win of the
season. Romine made it past the first round only two other times this year, in
addition to his loss to Price prior to this weekend. Both times he lost in the
second round. Romine had a better light and was ahead at 60 feet at 60 feet. By the
time the two riders got to the 330 foot mark, Price had pulled ahead and he
continued to pull away for the rest of the quarter mile. Price gave up lane choice
to Cox in the final round.

first round two weeks later at Budds Creeks. Price made it to the final round at
Rockingham in the spring season opener, only to lose to Doug Vancil. He got his
only win of the season at Shreveport when he beat Mike Romine and then made it to
the finals three more times this season, losing all three rounds. This is the first
time this season that Cox has made it to the finals. The only other time he made it
past the first round this year was at Epping, when he lost to Steve Stordeur in
round two. Cox had a tough road to the final round and had to get by Johnny Mancuso
and Steve Stordeur to get there. Price beat Mark Conner and Mike Romine to get into
the finals.
Price and Cox had identical reaction times but Cox picked up six
hundredths of a second by the 60-foot mark. Cox continued to pull ahead and when
Price's engine popped at mid-track, it was all over and Cox had the first win of
his career. Cox's margins: 60ft(0.059), 330ft(0.141), 660ft(0.208), 1,000ft(0.194).
Margin of victory: 0.0635 seconds (approximately 19 feet).
