Results for Qualifying 1
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - ROCKINGHAM-1 - Notes from round
1 qualifying in Pro Modified at
the IHRA Drag Racing Series, 32nd annual Holley Spring Nationals
presented by
Advance Auto Parts listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed,
and position in
order following run:
Left Lane: Paul Athey No Time, Now #4
Right Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 14.917/59.46, Now #3
Athey had a huge nitrous explosion in the second
Quain Stott Corvette and pulled to
the left wall. One photographer said the fireball was as big
as the car! Mitch
Stott launched hard and then shook hard.
Left Lane: Dale Brinsfield Runs 13.565/70.55, Now #4
Right Lane: Tommy Gray Runs 6.273/223.02, Now #1
Brinsfield spun and then chattered the tires hard.
Nice pass by the "Undertaker."
Left Lane: Chip King Runs 6.338/210.57, Now #2
Right Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 6.437/217.74, Now #4
Two relatively good runs, neither car in real
trouble anywhere on the track.
Left Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 6.190/227.30, Now #1
Right Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.904/154.12, Now #6
McAmis made a huge run, breaking the track ET
record on a run that was not
particularly straight for the first 300 feet. Hood was on a
good pass, but then
the car made a hard move toward the centerline and he lifted.
Left Lane: Michael Lockwood Runs 6.341/220.19, Now #5
Right Lane: Al Billes Runs 6.143/227.15, Now #1
That record didn't last long, Billes on a monster
pass down the right lane.
Lockwood made a good run, but was way behind.
Left Lane: Bob Rieger Runs 6.238/220.62, Now #3
Right Lane: Not On File Runs 6.619/214.38, Now #9
Nice pass by Rieger. Don't know who the
driver is in the right lane, no tech card
yet.
Left Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 6.549/217.95, Now #9
Right Lane: Frankie Taylor No Time, Now #15
Taylor's car wouldn't fire. Clean pass by
Patterson.
Left Lane: Roy Wasko Runs 8.249/114.43, Now #12
Right Lane: Scott Ray No Time, Now #16
Ray broke at the line. Wasko shook hard,
leaving a set of "caterpillar tracks"
down the lane.
Left Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 12.158/71.27, Now #15
Right Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 6.464/218.16, Now #9
Hard shake for Hoover, clean pass by Critchley.
Left Lane: Harold Martin Runs 12.454/85.52, Now #17
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.373/218.62, Now #7
Same story...
Left Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 9.737/96.09, Now #16
Right Lane: Mike Janis Runs 7.361/132.21, Now #14
Hahn chattered the tires on the launch,
fishtailed, and shut it down. Janis looked
like he was on a good pass to about half track, then the car made
a vicious move
toward the wall and he had to shut it down.
Left Lane: Buzz Varner Runs 9.204/123.62, Now #17
Right Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.301/218.05, Now #5
Same story once again, the left lane claiming
another victim.
Left Lane: Keith Baker Runs 6.751/202.39, Now #15
Right Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 6.234/222.18, Now #3
Baker didn't shake the tires, but he also didn't
get down the lane very quickly.
Ashley's car fishtailed several times, but the veteran never
lifted, a gutsy,
1,500-foot run.
Left Lane: Marcello Mastroianni Runs 15.468/53.32, Now #27
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 12.102/66.21, Now #22
Castellana's '41 Willys is so new it's not even
painted yet, in shiny gray.
Both cars shook hard, went silent, and coasted through.

Best prior run: 6.301/218.05, Was #6
Right Lane: Buzz Varner Runs 15.326/51.62, Now #23;

Right Lane: Bob Rieger Runs 6.147/223.32, Now #2;
Best prior run: 6.238/220.62, Was #4
The sun is now down, but the left lane is still
very shaky. Nice pass by Rieger,
clean and relatively straight, bested only by Al Billes' track
record run.
Left Lane: Al Billes Runs 12.864/61.04, Now #1;
Best prior run: 6.143/227.15, Was #1
Right Lane: Fred Hahn No Time, Now #19;

groove. to the left, and crossing the centerline.
Left Lane: Quain Stott Runs 19.141/52.06, Now #10;
Best prior run: 0.000/0.15, Was #0
Right Lane: Danny Vaughn Runs 14.388/67.76, Now #14;
Best prior run: 0.000/9.00, Was #0
Both ripped the tires loose instantly, Stott's car
squatting way down before losing traction.
Left Lane: Ed Burnley Jr Runs 6.850/204.73, Now #17; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Steve Vick Runs 13.954/72.34, Now #24; No Prior Run
Burnley's car left very softly, with a 1.147
60-foot time. Vick lost traction and shook instantly.
Left Lane: John Russo No Time, Now #31; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.287/221.38, Now #6; No Prior Run
Both drivers bypassed the scales after shaking in
the first round. Russo's car
staged, then rolled back out of the staging beam when he brought
the RPMs up, for a
"NO TIME." Nice run by Jenkins, smooth and clean.
Left Lane: Frankie Taylor Runs 7.699/145.56, Now #22; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Paul Athey Runs 6.726/169.19, Now #18; No Prior Run
Athey had a nitrous explosion in the first round.
Taylor launched, shook, pedaled,
the car bottomed and spit out sparks, he pedaled again, and again,
and
again...Meanwhile, Athey's car was belching header flames
periodically on a
not-very-straight run.
Left Lane: Mike Janis Runs 11.086/75.30, Now #21;
Best prior run: 7.361/132.21, Was #21
Right Lane: Dale Brinsfield Runs 14.850/59.23, Now #26;
Best prior run: 13.566/70.55, Was #26
Janis left hard with a 0.998 60-foot time, then
shook and lifted. Brinsfield lost traction and shook
immediately.
Left Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 13.576/61.24, Now #20;
Best prior run: 6.904/154.12, Was #20
Right Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 12.432/76.29, Now #3;
Best prior run: 6.190/227.30, Was #3
More shake, lots of it.
Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.289/217.63, Now #7;
Best prior run: 6.373/218.62, Was #10
Right Lane: Mike Lockwood No Time, Now #10;
Best prior run: 6.341/220.19, Was #9
Lockwood shut off after the burnout and was pushed
away. Smith made his quickest
nitrous pass ever.
Left Lane: Scott Ray Runs 10.154/76.20, Now #24; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Roy Wasko Runs 12.736/61.21, Now #26; No Prior Run
Ray's car was making popcorn, alternating header
flames from the left and right
headers. Wasko slowed almost immediately.
Left Lane: Troy Critchley No Time, Now #14;
Best prior run: 6.464/218.16, Was #13
Right Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.375/215.51, Now #11;
No Prior Run
These two started to stage and then both red
lights came on, a timing problem.
They backed out, reset the tree, then Critchley left before the
tree was activated,
getting no time. Hoover waited a second or so to make sure
he was settled down,
then made a very nice run.
Left Lane: Steve Salvadore Runs 6.518/216.41, Now #15;
Best prior run: 6.619/214.38, Was #17
Right Lane: Harold Martin No Time, Now #34; No Prior Run
Martin was shut off after the burnout, leaking
some kind of fluid (the call was
"oil." Nice pass by Salvadore to about 1,000-feet,
then he pedaled it, the RPMs
dropping and then coming back up.
Right Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 10.881/80.00, Now #16;
Best prior run: 6.549/217.95, Was #16
Big wheelstand for Patterson. He pedaled,
then thought better of it and shut it down.
Right Lane: Chip King Runs 6.243/208.49, Now #5;
Best prior run: 6.338/210.57, Was #9
King went about 1,500 feet on this run, the
Avenger darting back and forth and back again.
Left Lane: Rick Stivers Runs 12.433/69.70, Now #27; No Prior Run
Stivers made his last licensing pass earlier this
afternoon. He had problems
staging, the nose of the car perhaps a bit low. He brought
the RPMs up, edged
forward, then pre-stage bulb went out. He dropped the RPMs,
then tried again, this
time getting a green light. The car chattered the tires and
fishtailed violently,
so he shut it down.

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - ROCKINGHAM-1 - Notes from
final, round 3 qualifying in Mopar
Parts Pro Modified at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 32nd
annual Holley
Spring Nationals presented by Advance Auto Parts listing lane,
driver name, elapsed
time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best
prior elapsed
time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Steve Salvadore Runs 6.302/220.12, Now #10;
Best prior run: 6.518/216.41, Was #15
Right Lane: Chip King Runs 6.290/223.50, Now #5;
Best prior run: 6.243/208.49, Was #5
2:24 PM The air temperature is right around
60 degrees, the track is around 105.
Pretty good conditions...nice launch by Salvadore, a 1.004 60-foot
time. But
King's blown Mopar had the top-end edge.
Left Lane: Scott Ray Runs 14.199/58.23, Now #25;
Best prior run: 10.154/76.20, Was #25
Right Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 6.355/218.58, Now #12;
Best prior run: 6.549/217.95, Was #16
Ray left distinct chatter marks on the launch pad
and then lifted. Pretty good
pass for Patterson, but it looked like he sacrificed a few pistons
in the lights,
trailing white smoke in the shutdown area..
Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.355/219.29, Now #8;
Best prior run: 6.289/217.63, Was #8
Right Lane: Harold Martin Runs 6.325/221.49, Now #11; No Prior Run
Nice side-by-side show for the big Saturday crowd
- they are parking cars across
the road, at the NASCAR track! The bump is now a respectable
6.437, Steve Cossis
on the bubble.
Left Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 6.231/222.80, Now #4;
Best prior run: 6.464/218.16, Was #17
Right Lane: Bob Rieger Runs 12.643/59.31, Now #2;
Best prior run: 6.147/223.32, Was #2
Very nice run for Critchley, straight and quick.
Rieger left even harder, a 0.999
short time to Critchley's 1.010, but when he shifted the driveline
let go, a short
tube that looked like a driveshaft bouncing across the track.
Now it's Quain Stott
on the bubble with a 6.410.
Left Lane: John Russo Runs 6.427/219.36, Now #17; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 9.175/94.59, Now #8;
Best prior run: 6.287/221.38, Was #8
Good effort for Russo, but just short of the bump
time. Both cars made major moves
around the 330-foot mark, Jenkins lifting.
Left Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.149/229.20, Now #3;
Best prior run: 7.361/132.21, Was #24
Right Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 6.336/225.15, Now #14;
Best prior run: 8.189/106.80, Was #26
Nice comeback by Janis, our third 6.14 of the
weekend, one in each qualifying
session. Nice comeback for Hahn, too, but short of that
team's expectations. Now
the bump is Patterson's 6.355.
Left Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.345/214.62, Now #16;
Best prior run: 6.904/154.12, Was #25
Right Lane: Roy Wasko Runs 6.368/217.53, Now #18;
Best prior run: 12.736/61.21, Was #30
Hood replaces Patterson on the bump spot.
Wasko comes up short on a fairly good
run.
Left Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.273/219.22, Now #9;
Best prior run: 6.301/218.05, Was #11
Right Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.399/217.00, Now #19;
Best prior run: 6.375/215.51, Was #19
Pittman's "Grave Digger" moved well up
the ladder on a solid run, but he appeared
to sacrifice a few pistons in the lights, a problem that plagued
the car in
pre-season testing in Virginia. No help for Hoover.
Left Lane: Tommy Gray Runs 6.314/220.80, Now #8;
Best prior run: 6.273/223.02, Was #8
Right Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 6.114/228.92, Now #1;
Best prior run: 6.190/227.30, Was #4
Pittman's Grave Digger digs them, Gray's
"Undertaker" fills them, although on a
very crooked path. Meanwhile, McAmis makes it look easy,
right down the groove on
a smooth pass.
Left Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 6.311/222.77, Now #13;
Best prior run: 12.981/65.09, Was #31
Right Lane: Johnny Pilcher Runs 6.407/216.72, Now #21;
No Prior Run
Stott bumps Ronnie Hood. Pilcher's run was
off the mark a bit from the start. Now
the bump is Mike Lockwood's 6.341.
Left Lane: Danny Vaughn Runs 6.522/213.13, Now #25;
Best prior run: 6.554/212.79, Was #25
Right Lane: Marcello Mastroianni Runs 7.049/204.32, Now #29;
Best prior run: 25.643/29.20, Was #36
No help for either of these two, Vaughn's car
trailing black smoke all the way and
Mastroianni's white puffs of smoke on the top end.
Left Lane: Al Billes Runs 6.157/226.54, Now #2;
Best prior run: 6.143/227.15, Was #2
Right Lane: Keith Baker Runs 7.832/113.25, Now #26;
Best prior run: 6.707/199.70, Was #26
Another nice pass by Billes, but not enough to
challenge McAmis.
Left Lane: Frankie Taylor Runs 6.342/201.61, Now #17;
Best prior run: 7.699/145.56, Was #30
Right Lane: Dale Brinsfield Runs 15.855/56.58, Now #34;
Best prior run: 13.566/70.55, Was #34
Brinsfield's car turned hard left on the launch
and he shut it down. Taylor was on
a stout pass, but his engine started spewing white smoke on the
top end after
reaching half track in 4.069 seconds at 177.02 mph, just a few
hundredths behind
the quickest runs of the round.
Left Lane: Quain Stott Runs 15.711/51.02, Now #23;
Best prior run: 6.410/219.83, Was #23
Right Lane: Steve Vick Runs 14.006/65.17, Now #35;
Best prior run: 13.954/72.34, Was #35
Massive tire shake in both lanes...
Left Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 6.561/211.96, Now #25;
Best prior run: 6.437/217.74, Was #25
Right Lane: Paul Athey No Time, Now #28;
Best prior run: 6.726/169.19, Was #28
Athey's Corvette chattered the tires and then lost
fire, rolling to a stop about
400 feet down the track. Cossis was slow off the line and
never made it up.
Left Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 12.716/64.86, Now #6;
Best prior run: 6.234/222.18, Was #6
Right Lane: Mike Lockwood Runs 6.333/220.15, Now #15;
Best prior run: 6.341/220.19, Was #16
Huge tire shake for Ashley. He pedaled, and
shook very hard once again. Lockwood
drove through shake to salvage his run, moving off the bump spot.
Now it's Fred
Hahn on the bubble at 6.336, making this the second-quickest Pro
Mod field ever.
Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 12.248/67.04, Now #32;
Best prior run: 12.102/66.21, Was #32
Right Lane: Buzz Varner Runs 12.840/63.56, Now #34;
Best prior run: 15.326/51.62, Was #36
Big tire shake in both lanes.
Right Lane: Rick Stivers Runs 7.382/207.78, Now #31;
Best prior run: 12.433/69.70, Was #33
And Stivers rolls the beams, producing a very slow
60-foot time and hurting the
elapsed time.

Results for Qualifying 4
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - ROCKINGHAM-1 - Notes from
final, round 4 qualifying in Mopar
Parts Pro Modified at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 32nd
annual Holley
Spring Nationals presented by Advance Auto Parts listing lane,
driver name, elapsed
time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best
prior elapsed
time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Buzz Varner Runs 13.314/61.44, Now #31; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 14.880/51.50, Now #30;
Best prior run: 12.102/66.21, Was #30
7:21 PM Both drivers have struggled, so Fred
Hahn's 6.336 bump time seemed like an
insurmountable hurdle. It was. Varner's car swerved
wildly on the launch and he
wisely lifted. Castellana was out of the throttle by 330
feet, the reason hidden
in darkness.
Left Lane: Mike Lockwood No Time, Now #15;
Best prior run: 6.333/220.15, Was #15
Right Lane: Mike Ashley Runs 10.795/85.61, Now #6;
Best prior run: 6.234/222.18, Was #6
Lockwood made the burnout, started to stage, then
shut it off. Ashley overpowered
the launch pad, pedaling twice before giving up.
Left Lane: Paul Athey Runs 6.338/211.00, Now #17;
Best prior run: 6.726/169.19, Was #28
Right Lane: Steve Cossis No Time, Now #26;
Best prior run: 6.437/217.74, Was #25
Athey's arm was badly bruised last round, the car
hitting the wall and the
driveshaft breaking, hitting his arm. At first it was
thought to be broken.
Cossis shut off before staging, Athey came within a couple
thousandths of making
the field on his first full pass of the weekend.
Left Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 10.095/83.56, Now #16;
Best prior run: 6.336/225.15, Was #16
Right Lane: Al Billes Runs 6.217/224.17, Now #2;
Best prior run: 6.143/227.15, Was #2
An unlikely non-qualifier, Hahn finds himself on
the bubble and vulnerable in these
conditions. The car went to the left, out of the groove, the
front wheels in the
air, and Hahn had to lift. Very nice pass by Billes, but
slower than he'd already
run twice.
Left Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 6.475/182.82, Now #20;
Best prior run: 6.355/218.58, Was #20
Right Lane: Danny Vaughn Runs 8.676/95.19, Now #27;
Best prior run: 6.522/213.13, Was #27
Vaughn's car spit some red-hot "stuff"
from the right header bank, fortunately
missing the photographers. Patterson's car headed for the
wall and that cost him
some time.
Left Lane: Dale Brinsfield Runs 11.498/75.15, Now #30;
Best prior run: 13.566/70.55, Was #32
Right Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 6.225/224.28, Now #5;
Best prior run: 6.311/222.77, Was #13
Brinsfield slowed before the 330-foot marker.
Stott made crew chief Jimmy Rector
very happy with this run, moving well into the top half of the
field.
Left Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.456/216.17, Now #22;
Best prior run: 6.375/215.51, Was #22
Right Lane: Scott Ray Runs 15.769/51.66, Now #33;
Best prior run: 14.199/58.23, Was #33
Missed Hoover's run, too busy watching the big
fireball from Ray's engine.
Left Lane: Steve Vick Runs 12.189/81.63, Now #32;
No Prior Run
Right Lane: John Russo Runs 6.276/220.91, Now #11;
Best prior run: 6.427/219.36, Was #25
Bye bye Hahn, Russo with a clutch run to jump well
into the field. Vick's problems
continued, shaking once again. Now it's the quickest field
in history, anchored by
Mike Lockwood's 6.333.
Left Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 12.891/66.76, Now #12;
Best prior run: 6.287/221.38, Was #12
Right Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 6.245/222.03, Now #6;
Best prior run: 6.231/222.80, Was #6
Jenkins only had one good run so far this weekend,
this one over early.
Critchley's team appears to have the new '53 Corvette figured out
now, another
smooth run.
Left Lane: Keith Baker Runs 8.347/108.82, Now #28;
Best prior run: 6.707/199.70, Was #28
Right Lane: Steve Salvadore No Time, Now #14;
Best prior run: 6.302/220.12, Was #14
Salvadore never did get staged, his passenger door
refusing to latch after the crew
opened it to let the smoke out. Baker slowed early in the
run.
Left Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 6.164/224.92, Now #1;
Best prior run: 6.114/228.92, Was #1
Right Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.435/221.20, Now #25;
Best prior run: 6.410/219.83, Was #25
McAmis makes another very quick run, clean and
straight with a super-quick 0.981
60-foot time. Stott was slow off the line, then gathered it
up, but too late.
Left Lane: Harold Martin No Time, Now #15;
Best prior run: 6.325/221.49, Was #15
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.350/220.58, Now #13;
Best prior run: 6.289/217.63, Was #13
This one was scary. Martin had an engine
explosion right off the line, followed by
an oil fire. The onboard fire extinguisher knocked it down
briefly, the car
rolling almost to the finish line, then the fire flared back up
again, with flames
20 feet in the air. It seemed like an eternity before the
door opened and another
eternity before Martin rolled out of the car. It took the
safety crew what seemed
like yet another eternity to catch up with the slowly rolling car
and put the fire
out - all three eternities, combined, lasting probably less than
thirty seconds
from beginning to end.
The word from the top end, from the IHRA trauma surgeon, Martin is
fine.
Meanwhile, Smith made his fourth full pass of the event, something
very rare this
weekend in any of the Pro eliminators.
Left Lane: Johnny Pilcher Runs 6.481/203.80, Now #24;
Best prior run: 6.407/216.72, Was #24
Right Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.328/218.48, Now #16;
Best prior run: 6.345/214.62, Was #20
Hood qualified for all the races in 2000 and 2001,
so his two-year streak was in
jeopardy. He gets in, but on the bump spot, so the suspense
continues.
Left Lane: Roy Wasko Runs 6.362/212.86, Now #22;
Best prior run: 6.368/217.53, Was #22
Right Lane: Tommy Gray Runs 6.240/223.17, Now #8;
Best prior run: 6.273/223.02, Was #9
Wasko makes his best run of the weekend, but comes
up short. Gray moves from the
bottom half to the top half, but just barely, still facing Chip
King tomorrow if
nothing changes.
Right Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 9.730/88.88, Now #10;
Best prior run: 6.273/219.22, Was #10
"Grave Digger" was all over the lane and
Pittman lifted.
Right Lane: Mike Janis Runs 16.599/58.82, Now #4;
Best prior run: 6.149/229.20, Was #4
Janis' earlier run was quick enough to be a
backup for a potential e.t. record
run, but he overpowered the launch pad instantly.
Left Lane: Rick Stivers Runs 7.716/125.38, Now #30; No Prior Run
Last car with a chance to bump Hood and Stivers
started out well, but the car
started darting around and he pedaled once, then lifted.

Results for Elimination Round 1
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Mopar
Parts Pro Modified at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 32nd annual Holley
Spring Nationals presented by Advance Auto Parts:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Tommy Gray (Undertaker '53 Corvette) 0.542 6.286 222.11
(L) Chip King ('01 Avenger) 0.524 6.349 218.80
12:34 PM King was away first but Gray was ahead by the time they reached the
60-foot timers and then steadily opened the gap to win by half a car length.
(W) Rickie Smith ('01 Viper) 0.495 6.385 217.95
(L) Mike Janis (Jan-Cen Engines '63 Corvette) 0.480 9.409 93.78
Janis spun the tires hard while Smith made a clean pass - the 2001 champion
is out early.
(W) Steve Salvadore ('53 Corvette) 0.366 6.758 170.11
(L) Bob Rieger ('57 Bel Air) 0.020(R) 6.172 220.91
Rieger staged and Salvadore was very slow to stage, barely beating the
auto-start timeout. Rieger couldn't wait, leaving way early.
(L) Mike Ashley (Lend America '53 Studebaker) 0.000(R) (Broke)
(L) Alan Pittman (Grave Digger '41Willys) 0.000(R) (Broke)
Neither could fire, so somebody gets a single in round two.
(W) Al Billes ('53 Studebaker) 0.464 6.575 220.15
(L) Mike Lockwood ('66 Corvette) 0.550 9.106 91.93
Lockwood was in for Harold Martin, who had a big fire in the final qualifying
session. But it didn't pan out for Lockwood, losing power at half track.
(W) John Russo ('92 Trans Am) 0.586 11.325 87.35
(L) Troy Critchley ('53 Corvette) 0.259(R) 6.538 220.91
Critchley's car pulled through the beam when he brought the RPMs up, then
Russo chattered the tires and got very sideways - but he wisely shut it down and
coasted to the win.
(W) Tim McAmis (Sanders M'Sports '63 Corvette) 0.506 6.213 225.97
(L) Ronnie Hood (Roy Hill School '63 Corvette) 0.495 6.588 175.75
Hood gave it a shot, but McAmis just had too much for him, steadily pulling
away, Hood throwing in the towel by 1,000 feet.
In round two it's McAmis
with lane choice over Gray, Jenkins over Smith, Billes has a single, and Salvadore
over Russo.

Results for Elimination Round 2

(L) John Russo ('92 Trans Am) 0.924 12.761 96.31
2:06 PM These two qualified in the bottom half of the field, pulling off
upsets in the first round. Russo had problems getting the car launched, while
Salavadore chattered the tires hard. By the time Russo got the RPMs up and
launched, Salvadore had regained traction and ran away for an easy win.
(W) Shannon Jenkins ('68 Camaro) 0.476 6.289 221.49
(L) Rickie Smith ('01 Viper) 0.487 8.633 102.81
Smith shook and danced early in the run while Jenkins had it hooked up all
the way.
(W) Tommy Gray (Undertaker '53 Corvette) 0.496 6.326 220.55
(L) Tim McAmis (Sanders M'Sports '63 Corvette) 0.509 13.364 76.22
Same story, different pair. McAmis shook and headed for the wall, Gray made
a clean run.
(W) Al Billes ('53 Studebaker) 0.634 10.805 78.11
was unopposed
Billes used the freebie to test the right lane - tire shake once
again.
In the semifinals it's Salvadore with lane choice against Billes and
Jenkins with the pick against Gray.

(L) Steve Salvadore ('53 Corvette) 0.485 6.761 210.47
3:30 PM Salvadore has been the surprise of the race and had lane choice
against Billes. The magic ended there. Salvadore was away first with a nice
holeshot and a strong launch, but his car started spinning the tires and skating
around about 300 feet out and Billes drove away for an easy win.
(W) Shannon Jenkins ('68 Camaro) 0.466 6.307 220.94
(L) Tommy Gray (Undertaker '53 Corvette) 0.534 6.319 221.49
Jenkins showed why he is called "The Iceman." He nailed Gray to the tree and
then paced him to the other end to advance to the finals, losing lane choice to
Billes

light a 0.476, but tire shake did him in here, his car chattering the tires and
turning sideways on the launch. Billes left on time and ran hard, making a
relatively clean run, almost straight down the groove.
