Right Lane: Mike Romine No Time, Now #2
12:26 PM Nitro fumes fill the air for the
first time in the 2002 season, the
two-wheel variety (the second wheel used mostly just to stage the
bike and break
the beam at the finish line). Bad start, Romine breaking at
the line and Stordeur
smoking the big rear slick on the launch.
Left Lane: Mark Cox Runs 7.162/184.55, Now #1
Right Lane: Doug Vancil Runs 7.428/130.37, Now #2
Vancil left hard, but abandoned the run near half
track. Cox had problems getting
through the first 330 feet, then came on strong.
Left Lane: Johnny Mancuso No Time, Now #5
Right Lane: Jay Turner Runs 6.615/209.33, Now #1
Mancuso's bike drifted to the right and Turner's
to the left, but Turner was able
to get it straightened out and continue while Mancuso's bike took
out the
1,000-foot marker, DQ'ing his run.
Right Lane: Bill Furr No Time, Now #2
Furr did his burnout, pulled forward, and the
engine went silent.

degrees in the right groove, 104 outside
the groove in the left. Nice run for Mancuso, tire spin on
the launch for Price.

Bad tire spin for Vancil, producing a 1.665
60-foot time. Cox spun the tire, but
not quite so severely.

Two clean runs, a very nice one by Turner to take
over the top spot.

Furr was fighting the bike for control early and
abandoned the run. Good pass by
Conner to fill the field to eight bikes, with Furr on the bubble.

Final run of the round and Romine bumps Furr on an
easy-looking pass.

the quickest Nitro Harley run ever. The
incrementals: 1.057 at 60 ft, 2.742 at 330, 4.117/.178.87 at
660, 5.315 at 1,000
feet. Furr makes a good pass to get in, bumping Ray Price.

12:12 PM Romine's bike faltered on the launch and he coasted through. Nice
run by Stordeur, smooth and straight.

Mancuso's engine went away early in the run. Vancil made a nice run, but
there was a cloud of smoke in the shutdown area, so he may have sacrificed a
bullet.

Price showed his long experience here, the bike veering to the right and
almost crossing the centerline. He rode it out and got it back in the groove by
the finish line. Conner was a couple hundredths back at half track, then
slowed.

Good race, Cox with the early advantage and Turner running him down at half
track when Cox's engine went sour.
In the semifinals it's Stordeur with lane choice against Vancil, by 0.024 seconds,
and Turner with the choice against Price.

3:12 PM Moving right along...nice afternoon, near 70 degrees, sunny, light
breeze. It was a good drag race, both riders hazing the tires slightly a couple
times enroute to the finish line. In the end, Vancil's starting line advantage
determined the winner, the two runs as alike as you could want. Vancil's Margin
60ft(-0.034), 330ft(0.000), 660ft(0.022), 1,000ft(0.014).
MOV: 0.0061 seconds (approximately 23 inches).

Another good drag race, Turner reacting quicker but spinning the big rear
tire on the launch, with a 1.317 60-foot time to Price's 1.106. That let Price
build a couple tenths of a second lead, which he never surrendered. Price will
have lane choice against Vancil in the final round.

heading for the 330-foot reflector, forcing him to back off the throttle and steer

a relatively clean run, right down the groove, for a surprisingly easy win
