ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - ROCKINGHAM-1 - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the
IHRA Drag Racing Series, 32nd annual Holley Spring Nationals presented by Advance Auto Parts listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 5.894/238.55, Now #2
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 5.763/242.23, Now #1

12:35 PM These two worked for what they got, Rector's run far from straight and
brand's car all over the lane, making a hard left turn on the launch, forcing Brand
to muscle it back in the groove.

Left Lane: Ronnie Midyette No Time, Now #4
Right Lane: Dave Ray Runs 6.198/222.47, Now #3

Midyette's car went hard left, crossing the yellow line along the left side of the
lane (a DQ) but missing the wall by a good six inches. Ray appeared to pop the
blower in then lights, the hood hatch sailing through the air.

Left Lane: Mark Poyser Runs 9.065/0.00, Now #4
Right Lane: Peter Osterio No Time, Now #5

Poyser's car shook early and he shut it down. Osterio's labored, sounding like it
never got out of first gear, and he put the chutes out, taking out the 1,000-foot
marker and DQ'ing the run. No speed recorded for Poyser.

Left Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.853/237.67, Now #2
Right Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 5.917/238.26, Now #4

Nice run for Cannister. Thomas left a very crooked set of tire tracks, yet got
there first anyway.

Left Lane: Ray Drew Runs 6.771/174.21, Now #7
Right Lane: Terry Munroe Runs 6.212/210.57, Now #6

Munroe left hard but ran out of steam on the top end. Drew chattered the tires and
got completely out of the throttle, then continued.

Left Lane: Bobby Baucom Runs 10.373/74.85, Now #9
Right Lane: Chris Foster Runs 22.428/30.52, Now #10

Lots of tire shake for both cars, Foster appearing to lose a blower belt, with lots
of raw fuel from the headers, while Baucom managed to shut it down with no visible
damage.

Left Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.857/235.97, Now #3
Right Lane: Bunny Burkett No Time, Now #12

Burkett's car shook hard and then lost the blower belt, rolling to a stop about 400
feet down the track. Meanwhile, Vouros sailed down the left lane with no visible
problems whatever.

Left Lane: Paul Lee No Time, Now #16
Right Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 13.625/57.48, Now #11

Lee's "Cape Codder" broke at the end of the burnout and had to be pushed off the
track before Bogolo could run. Then Bogolo broke the tires loose and turned
sideways on the launch pad.

Left Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 5.910/234.70, Now #5
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 10.619/87.14, Now #12

Atchison did a good job of pedaling his way through shake to salvage the run.
McMillen chattered the tires hard and shut it down.

Left Lane: James Spencer No Time, Now #20
Right Lane: Billy Williams Runs 6.156/211.33, Now #7

Spencer's car died on the burnout. Williams' car shook slightly on the launch and
then labored on the top end.

That's it, a few good runs and many ugly ones.
