Results for Qualifying 1
SHREVEPORT, La. - SHREVEPORT - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the
Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 5th annual K&N Filters Nationals presented by Your
Local Dodge Dealers listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and
position in order following run:
Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 5.174/260.51, Now #1
Right Lane: Jack Ostrander Runs 10.346/78.26, Now #2
The first round of Top Fuel qualifying was rained out last night, so every
driver will get only two chances today to make the field. Ostrander has a really
ugly start as he spun the tires for the first 100 feet and had to shut it down.
Head lifted the front end a bit too high at the start but got it back down and
stayed with the run.
Left Lane: Mitch King Runs 5.287/193.88, Now #2
Right Lane: Roger Dean Runs 6.239/269.56, Now #3
Dean smoked the tires in the right lane. In the left, King got very sideways
but managed to hang on and stay away from the walls.
Left Lane: Donald Reed Runs 6.351/139.95, Now #4
Right Lane: Josh Starcher Runs 10.395/83.41, Now #6
This is high-school junior Josh Starcher's second race of his Top Fuel
career. This time, Starcher lifted the front end and shook the tires so he shut it
down quickly. Reed shook his tires too and also had to shut down.
Left Lane: Paul Romine Runs 4.898/280.14, Now #1
Right Lane: Louie Allison Runs 4.974/260.97, Now #2
Both Romine and Allison made good looking runs and were the first two drivers
to make sub-5 second runs today. Allison got a little loose eat the end of the run
but it wasn't enough to make him back off. Romine was straight the whole way down
the track.
Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 6.085/257.19, Now #6
Right Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 4.894/303.57, Now #1
Litton came off the line hard and kept charging for the entire quarter mile.
Millican shook the tires hard off the line but got back off the throttle and
pedaled his way down the track. Millican ran well enough to get the number six
qualifying position. With the weather looking as if it could rain at any time,
Millican's decision to stay with the run may have been a good one if the final
round of qualifying were to be washed out.
