Results for Qualifying 1
MARTIN, Mich. - MARTIN - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the Hooters
IHRA Drag Racing Series, 21st annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Northern Nationals listing
lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Bobby Lagana Jr Runs 6.542/149.05, Now #2
Right Lane: Vicky Fanning Runs 6.201/232.35, Now #1
8:45 PM Here we go, the Sun just about tree level so the header flames will
be clearly visible. Lagana's header flames were visible until they turned green at
half track, then the car slowed. Fanning's car showed no header flames at all,
laboring down the track, but it stayed in one piece.
Left Lane: John Sipple Runs 6.984/121.63, Now #4
Right Lane: Josh Starcher Runs 5.020/278.35, Now #1
Opposites attract - Sipple a 62-year-old Chiropracter and Starcher a
17-year-old High school senior. Sipple's car labored for 300 feet, then the header
flames went out. Starcher made a clean, solid pass, right down the groove with no
signs of engine damage.
Left Lane: Roger Dean Runs 5.681/254.86, Now #3
Right Lane: Donald Reed Runs 5.012/250.88, Now #1
Reed is running a KB engine instead of a McGee engine and made a very good
run to 1,000 feet, then the header flames went out, his trap speed only five mph
faster than his half-track speed. Reed posted a competitive 0.896 60-foot time and
apparently hurt no parts. Dean was slower off the mark with a 1.048 60-foot time
and never came up to full power.
Left Lane: Louie Allison Runs 6.612/133.16, Now #7
Right Lane: Paul Romine Runs 4.873/281.77, Now #1
This was no contest even before Allison's header flames went out, Romine
streaking away with a 0.866 60-foot time and a clean, hard, straight pass down the
groove. Allison's car struggled off the line with a 0.950 short time and the
header flames went out just past 330 feet.
Left Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 4.978/277.32, Now #2
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 5.007/272.45, Now #3
Millican's pace trailed Litton's all the way down the track and Litton surged
ahead when Millican got very close to the wall and had to shut it off.
Right Lane: Tim Cullinan Runs 5.152/282.07, Now #6
Cullinan is new to IHRA racing, driving a car with Spiess & Hecker
sponsorship. He may be new to us, but he's driven before judging from the way he
pedaled to keep the car out of the wall and continued when it drifted
right of the groove about 300 feet out, saving the run and getting into the
field.

Results for Qualifying 2
MARTIN, Mich. - MARTIN - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Fuel at the Hooters
IHRA Drag Racing Series, 21st annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Northern Nationals listing
lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following
run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Vicky Fanning Runs 5.724/244.92, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.201/232.35, Was #8
2:31 PM Fanning's car doesn't sound like a Top Fueler, more like a Top
Dragster with a slight cackle.
Left Lane: Tim Cullinan Runs 4.994/290.57, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.152/282.07, Was #7
Right Lane: John Sipple Runs 15.904/74.61, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.984/121.63, Was #12
Cullinan continues to amaze in his IHRA Top Fuel debut, the car strongly off
the line with a 0.933 60-foot time and a clean, strong pass in the fours. Sipple's
car barely got off the starting line under power, slowing and coasting
through.
Left Lane: Josh Starcher Runs 16.101/85.68, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.020/278.35, Was #7
Right Lane: Louie Allison Runs 5.531/193.07, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.612/133.16, Was #11
Starcher's car didn't move six inches before getting way up on the smoking
tires, looking very much like a clutch malfunction. Allison was on a good run
with a 0.947 60-foot time, but the engine expired in smoke around half track. He
got in, but barely.
Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.749/292.27, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.007/272.45, Was #5
Right Lane: Roger Dean Runs 5.653/260.91, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.681/254.86, Was #9
Millican's car leaped off the line with a 0.874 60-foot time and streaked to
the finish line, dropping a cylinder along the way, hurting the speed more than the
elapsed time. Dean was left far behind early in the run.
Left Lane: Paul Romine Runs 4.924/263.31, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.873/281.77, Was #2
Right Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 5.765/163.49, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.978/277.32, Was #3
These two started off well, Romine with a 0.857 60-foot time and Litton a
0.891, but Litton slowed around half track and Romine's car spit out the blower
belt around the 1,000-foot mark.

Results for Elimination Round 1
MARTIN, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Top Fuel
at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 21st annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Northern
Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Donald Reed (Dragster) 0.513 4.853 302.96
(L) Tim Cullinan (Spies-Hecker Dragster) 0.525 5.099 283.25
2:07 PM Reed is getting better with every race he runs, stepping way up from
his only qualifying run to send surprising newcomer Cullinan home. Reed posted a
0.889 60-foot time and was running 252.43 mph at half track.
(W) Bruce Litton (Lucas Oil Dragster) 0.519 4.952 280.78
(L) Josh Starcher (WIX Filters Dragster) 0.508 5.966 160.86
Starcher got a small holeshot, but Litton made that up in the first 60 feet
and then pulled away, Starcher's engine going dead at half track. Litton was on a
good pace initially, but dropped a cylinder about 200 feet out and never picked it
back up.
(W) Louie Allison (Vista Foods Dragster) 0.520 4.980 286.56
(L) Paul Romine (CARQUEST Auto Parts Dragster) 0.596 4.973 280.08
Allison didn't get a full pass on either of his qualifying runs, but he
certainly made one here. Romine was late, but reeled Allison in, trailing by just
0.003 seconds at 330 feet. Then Allison's car hunkered down and pulled away,
winning by almost 30 feet, but losing lane choice to Litton in round two.
(W) Clay Millican (Werner Dragster) 0.504 4.767 310.70
(L) Roger Dean (Rupert Oil Dragster) 0.531 5.781 257.19
This time Millican's car didn't drop a cylinder and he ran the 300 mph speed
he should have posted in qualifying. The run was impressive: 60ft-0.874 sec.,
330ft-2.246, 660ft-3.222/257.63mph, 1,000ft-4.050, quickest and fastest at every
intermediate timer. Millican has lane choice against Reed in the second round,
Reed posting the second-best set of numbers at every timer. Should be a good
'un!

Results for Elimination Round 2
MARTIN, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Top Fuel
at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 21st annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Northern
Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Bruce Litton (Lucas Oil Dragster) 0.516 4.938 289.14
(L) Louie Allison (Vista Foods Dragster) 0.454 5.099 265.48
4:25 PM These two ran within a few hundredths of each other in the first
round. Allison tattooed Litton on the tree, but then his engine went sour and
Litton drove by before half track. Then Allison's engine went up in flames,
trailing a big fireball down the track. Allison's engine also left a trail of oil
from about 400 feet through the finish line, so he not only lost the race, he also
lost 15 points for the "Black Flag" violation. Meanwhile, Litton got a car length
win and a head start on the turnaround for the final round since his opponent will
be one of the two cars still sitting in the staging lanes, waiting for the track
crew to finish the cleanup.
(W) Clay Millican (Werner Dragster) 0.453 4.803 307.30
(L) Donald Reed (Dragster) 0.279(R) 5.004 247.43
This sounds like a mismatch, but Reed has made two good laps down this race
track and was only nine hundredths slower than Millican in the first round. Okay,
so it didn't work out for Reed, but he gave it his best shot and ran with Millican
for the first half of the run. From half track on, however, Millican overcame even
the red-light start and got to the finish line first. He will have lane choice
against Litton in the finals.
Sunday
Results for Final Round
MARTIN, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 3 eliminations in
Top Fuel at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 21st annual CARQUEST Auto Parts
Northern Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Clay Millican (Werner Dragster) 0.449 4.878 301.81
(L) Bruce Litton (Lucas Oil Dragster) 0.452 5.123 283.91
6:27 PM With his round win in the semifinals, Millican broke Scott Kalitta's
record of 19 consecutive round wins in a season, set in 1994, and he was looking to
break the record for consecutive event wins in a row (seven) here, but Litton was
just as determined not to let it happen. Both drivers deep-staged and they left
almost together, but then it was all Millican, quicker at each incremental timer
early in the run and pulling away when Litton started hazing the tires about 300
feet out. That runs him to 21 consecutive round wins and seven consecutive event
wins for the season.
