MARTIN, Mich. - MARTIN - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Sunoco Race Fuels Pro Stock at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 21st annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Northern Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Doug Kirk Runs 6.703/207.05, Now #2
Right Lane: Hank Hill Runs 6.698/209.07, Now #1
12:03 PM It's 87 degrees, 67 percent relative humidity, and overcast. Things should pick up a bit in the evening session.

We open with two clean runs, no shake, no wasted motion.
Left Lane: Rick Jones Runs 6.751/206.48, Now #4
Right Lane: Jason Collins Runs 6.698/209.01, Now #2
Jones' Neon spun the tires hard on the launch and still recorded a 1.039 60-foot time! Collins clocked a 1.040 and was quicker on the top end.
Left Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 6.695/207.50, Now #1
Right Lane: Elijah Morton Runs 6.696/208.10, Now #2
That's four 6.69s so far, in six cars - must be that "parity" thing.
Left Lane: Carl Baker Runs 6.719/207.82, Now #6
Right Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.725/207.75, Now #7
Both drivers lost a hundredth or two to the earlier 6.69s in the first 330 feet and never made it up.
Left Lane: Charlie Peppers Runs 6.688/207.53, Now #1
Right Lane: Jeff Dobbins Runs 6.721/208.14, Now #8
Peppers bumps the ante with a 6.68 after a 1.024 second 60-foot time. Dobbins was 0.03 seconds slower in the first 60 feet and never got it back.
Left Lane: Ed Machacek Runs 6.830/204.45, Now #12
Right Lane: Chuck DeMory Runs 6.804/205.35, Now #11
Both carded 1.06 60-foot times and their elapsed times reflect the off-pace launches.
Left Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.695/207.08, Now #3
Right Lane: Tim Nabors Runs 6.722/207.02, Now #10
Rice posted a 1.026 60-foot time and got a 6.69 for his efforts. Nabors' 1.055 led to a predictably slower run.
Left Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.690/207.27, Now #2
Right Lane: Larry O'Brien Runs 6.804/205.88, Now #14
Miller had the quickest launch yet, a 1.009, and carried it through for the #2 spot.
Left Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 6.728/206.54, Now #13
Right Lane: Wally Stroupe Runs 6.808/203.28, Now #17

Left Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.693/206.92, Now #3
Right Lane: Pete Berner Runs 6.754/207.24, Now #16
Spiess posted a 1.024 short time and joined the "6.69 club." Benner squeaked in, but that time won't keep him in.
Left Lane: Richard Penland Runs 6.871/202.55, Now #22
Right Lane: John Bartunek Runs 6.711/205.91, Now #10
Bartunek had a nice 1.028 60-foot time, but fell off the pace on the top end.
Left Lane: Mike Del Nagro Runs 6.935/201.55, Now #23
Del Nagro had a very off-pace 1.120 60-foot time.
Right Lane: Robert Killian Runs 6.914/201.88, Now #23
Killian debuts a new, great-looking Mustang to replace the gorgeous Probe he totaled. He had a solid 1.04 60-foot time, but lost a lot in the first 330 feet.

Left Lane: John Bartunek Runs 6.682/206.99, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.711/205.91, Was #10

7:24 PM It's 87 degrees and 47 percent humidity for this round, no clouds in sight and the Sun low in the West,

Virtually all the teams underestimated the track in the first session - it has lots of bite and is very smooth. These two stepped up nicely, but so will most of the others in this round.
Left Lane: Pete Berner Runs 6.734/207.46, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.754/207.24, Was #17
Right Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.699/206.64, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.693/206.92, Was #4
Not much change here...
Left Lane: Wally Stroupe Runs 6.739/206.16, Now #17

Montecalvo stepped up nicely with a few hundredths improvement. Stroupe got down the track.
Left Lane: Chuck DeMory Runs 6.762/205.57, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.804/205.35, Was #21
Right Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 10.563/94.88, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.695/207.50, Was #6
Demory stepped up, but he had a long way to go. Holbrook had the first real case of the shakes we've seen today.
Left Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.655/208.97, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.725/207.75, Was #15

Best prior run: 6.695/207.08, Was #7
Rice left hard, the M/T slicks hooking hard, but Gahm left even harder and pulled away when Rice fell off the pace in the middle of the run.
Left Lane: Tim Nabors Runs 6.714/206.54, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.722/207.02, Was #15
Right Lane: Ed Machacek Runs 6.790/204.88, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.830/204.45, Was #22
Two clean runs, small improvements in both lanes.
Left Lane: Hank Hill Runs 6.683/209.07, Now #3

These two were together to half track, then Miller started losing ground.
Left Lane: Larry O'Brien Runs 11.430/96.35, Now #22
Best prior run: 6.804/205.88, Was #22
Right Lane: Rick Jones Runs 6.736/206.73, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.751/206.48, Was #18
Mopars, a pair. O'Brien's car shook and turned hard right on the launch, forcing him to back off. Jones trimmed a couple hundredths off his first run, but needed to improve another couple hundredths to get in the field.
Left Lane: Jeff Dobbins Runs 6.693/208.36, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.721/208.14, Was #15
Right Lane: Charlie Peppers Runs 6.685/208.42, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.688/207.53, Was #4
Good drag race, just a thousandth apart on reaction time and two thousandths apart at half track, Dobbins leading, but Peppers was a bit quicker on the top end.
Left Lane: Elijah Morton Runs 7.271/166.23, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.696/208.10, Was #11
Right Lane: Doug Kirk Runs 6.736/206.61, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.703/207.05, Was #13
Morton shook on the launch with a 1.113 60-foot time, killing his elapsed time. Kirk was better off the line with a 1.066, but couldn't run with the big dogs after that.
Left Lane: Jason Collins Runs 6.704/208.78, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.698/209.01, Was #12
Right Lane: Carl Baker Runs 6.701/208.62, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.719/207.82, Was #15
Almost identical runs, clean and straight.
Left Lane: Robert Killian Runs 6.942/201.58, Now #24
                                  No Prior Run
Killian skipped the scales on his first pass, so that aborted run was DQ'ed. This one may meet the same fate, his car with the wheels in the air and headed for the centerline, forcing him to pedal.
Right Lane: Mike Del Nagro Runs 6.842/202.91, Now #23
Best prior run: 6.935/201.55, Was #23
Clean run for Del Nagro, just not enough power to make the cut.

Dobbins' car went left, out of the groove, on the launch and he smoothly brought it back, but that cost him a bit in the elapsed time department and eh only improved four thousandths, enough to move two spots up the ladder.
Left Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.675/208.59, Now #1

Left Lane: Pete Berner Runs 6.755/207.11, Now #17

Left Lane: Ed Machacek Runs 6.779/204.76, Now #21

No help here...by the way, it's 80 degrees, 70 percent relative humidity, not really ideal conditions for these normally aspirated engines.
Left Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.676/207.05, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.688/206.64, Was #8

Jones gets a nice run with the Neon and moves away from the bump spot.
Left Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.677/207.30, Now #6

Left Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 6.685/208.23, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.692/208.36, Was #14

Results for Elimination Round 1

MARTIN, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Sunoco Race Fuels Pro Stock at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 21st annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Northern Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) John Bartunek (Pearl River Auto Grand Am) 0.431 6.729 205.72
 (L) Hank Hill (Probe) 0.482 6.728 208.49
12:37 PM It's 82 degrees and 72 percent relative humidity, under overcast skies, not exactly record-breaking conditions. The closest qualifiers in this tight field (0.041 seconds from first to sixteenth) lived up to expectations, the difference at the finish line equal to the difference at the starting line. Bartunek was away first and extended his lead to the 330-foot timer, then Hill started closing the gap, but ran out of race track. It qualifies as a "holeshot win" because Hill was a thousandth quicker, but lost. Bartunek's incremental margins: 60ft(0.095), 330 ft(0.087), 660ft(0.076), 1,000ft(0.064). MOV: 0.0505 seconds (approximately 15 feet).
 (W) Charlie Peppers (Mustang) 0.510 6.764 206.86
 (L) Steve Spiess (Moser Engineering Grand Am) 0.000(R) (Broke)
Spiess broke on the burnout, leaving a trail of water from the starting line to where he stopped. Peppers made a good run, but was almost a tenth of a second slower than his qualifying lap.
 (W) Ron Miller (Moser Engineering Cavalier) 0.463 6.734 206.35
 (L) Pete Berner (Mustang) 0.507 10.926 73.80
Miller had a good light and Berner didn't, but his 1.229 60-foot time made it clear Berner's car wasn't up to snuff and he shut it down, coasting through. Nice pass by Miller for the conditions.
 (W) Tim Nabors (Nabors Automotive Cavalier) 0.434 6.719 206.13
 (L) Chris Holbrook (SRI Marble & Granite Cougar)0.440 6.765 207.56
Wow! Two good reaction times, but Holbrook has struggled all weekend and could not stay with Nabors today. Nabors won by almost a car length, steadily increasing his lead at every incremental timer and ran the quickest lap so far.
 (W) Carl Baker (Summit Racing Cougar) 0.457 6.703 207.24
 (L) Jeff Dobbins (Sanders Ford Probe) 0.471 6.701 208.23
Nice holeshot win for Baker, Dobbins really eating into his lead on the top end. Baker's incremental margins: 60ft(0.032), 330 ft(0.023), 660ft(0.018), 1,000ft(0.015). MOV: 0.0122 seconds (approximately 4 feet). Baker will have lane choice against Nabors next round.
 (W) Jason Collins (Cougar) 0.462 6.709 208.78
 (L) Rick Jones (Neon R/T) 0.478 6.770 206.07
Collins left first and ran away from Jones, winning by about a car length. Collins has lane choice against Miller in round two.
 (W) John Montecalvo (Citgo Cavalier) 0.455 6.739 205.85
 (L) Dwayne Rice (Moser Engineering Grand Am) 0.488 6.720 206.99
Montecalvo, on a holeshot. Rice was running him down, but came up about four feet short. Montecalvo's incremental margins: 60ft(0.031), 330ft(0.028), 660ft(0.025), 1,000ft(0.018). MOV: 0.0141 seconds (approximately 4 feet). Montecalvo will have lane choice over Peppers in round two.
 (W) Brian Gahm (NAPA Tools & Equip. Mustang) 0.455 6.669 208.62
 (L) Elijah Morton (Sanders Ford Mustang) 0.513 6.744 200.89
Gahm sent a message with this run, the only driver in the sixties this morning. He will have lane choice against Bartunek in round two.

 (L) Charlie Peppers (Mustang) 0.165(R) 6.754 203.43
3:05 PM It's still 82 degrees and humid and overcast - but still no rain, cross your fingers. These two put on a bit of a staging battle, then Montecalvo rolled in and Peppers followed and then Peppers left, way early.
