Results for Qualifying 1
MARTIN, Mich. - MARTIN - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Mopar Parts Pro Modified
at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 21st annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Northern
Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order
following run:
Left Lane: Mel Eaves Runs 6.651/208.23, Now #1
Right Lane: Charles Carpenter No Time, Now #2
12:50 PM Carpenter, who pioneered the nostalgia-style Pro Mods, came back
after a long layoff only to shut it off after the burnout. Eaves is in a '57 Chevy
and gets very temporary possession of the pole position on a clean run.
Left Lane: Burton Auxier Runs 6.636/205.94, Now #2
Right Lane: Dan Provenzano Runs 6.598/213.47, Now #1
The front end of Auxier's Corvette is plain gray, obviously new bodywork.
Provenzano takes over the temporary #1 spot, both cars cleanly down the track.
Left Lane: Sal Passarelli Runs 6.411/224.70, Now #2
Right Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 6.403/222.14, Now #1
That's more like it, two clean, strong runs to tune from for this
evening.
Left Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 6.539/219.61, Now #4
Right Lane: Al Billes Runs 6.495/219.29, Now #3
Both blower cars were very sluggish off the starting line, Hahn with a 1.087
short time and Billes with a 1.093.
Left Lane: Mike Lockwood Runs 6.395/220.12, Now #1
Right Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.403/222.25, Now #2
Quain Stott is running M/T rear tires and they propel him to a 1.059 60-foot
time and the temporary #2 spot because Lockwood's nitrous-boosted entry was a few
ticks quicker at every timer.
Left Lane: Wayne Torkelson Runs 6.760/209.04, Now #11
Right Lane: Paul Athey Runs 6.465/216.03, Now #5
Athey's Corvette moved to the right, out of the groove, and he smoothly
brought it back with no wasted motion. Torkelson lost ground to Athey from the
start.
Left Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.455/218.90, Now #5
Right Lane: Brian Daniels Runs 6.681/215.00, Now #12
Pittman's starting line problems continue, with lots of tire spin and a 1.098
60-foot time. Daniels had an even worse start, a 1.118 short time way off the
pace.
Left Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.381/222.77, Now #1
Right Lane: Roy Wasko Runs 6.537/214.28, Now #9
Nice run by Janis, his 1.052 60-foot time nothing out of the ordinary, but
the remainder of the run smooth and strong with a 176.40 half-track speed. Clean
run by Wasko.
Left Lane: Harold Martin Runs 6.359/221.60, Now #1
Right Lane: Tony Pontieri Runs 6.588/214.35, Now #12
Martin has really come into his own this year after a major meltdown in
Rockingham. Nice run, his 177.98 half-track speed the best so far.
Left Lane: Billy Harper Runs 6.403/218.41, Now #6
Right Lane: Scott Ray Runs 6.611/214.79, Now #15
The Viper is back! Harper hooked hard with a 1.040 60-foot time and then
made a good run after a long layoff. Ray appears to be getting his new combination
sorted out.
Left Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.352/219.83, Now #1
Right Lane: Thomas Patterson No Time, Now #21
Patterson broke and was pushed back. Great run by "the Hoov," with a 1.035
60-foot time and a straight, smooth pass.
Left Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.404/219.04, Now #8
Right Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 6.559/214.89, Now #15
Clean pass by Jenkins, but Critchley's car smoked all the way down the strip
and will lose 15 points for a "black flag" oildown penalty.
Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 8.657/94.67, Now #24
Right Lane: Chip King Runs 6.867/205.47, Now #23
After a brief delay, Castellana, in a nitrous car, took on King, in a blower
car. Castellana's car leaped off the line with a 1.057 60-foot time, then nosed
over before half track, while King spun the tires hard for a 1.148 short time, then
ran hard until he shut it off around the 1,000-foot marker.
Left Lane: Michael Faucher Runs 6.844/207.24, Now #23
Right Lane: Steve Vick Runs 10.790/96.12, Now #26
Problems, we got problems. Vick slowed almost immediately. Faucher left
hard, drifted out of the groove, fishtailed several times, but completed the
run.
Right Lane: Zach Barklage Runs 15.199/66.32, Now #27
Barklage is an eighteen-year-old Quick Rod driver stepping up to Pro Mod. The
car bogged on the launch on his debut run.
