MARTIN, Mich. - MARTIN - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the Hooters
IHRA Drag Racing Series, 21st annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Northern Nationals listing
lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 5.968/236.30, Now #1
Right Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.997/233.32, Now #2
12:34 PM Two very nice runs open the Funny Car qualifying, both drivers
posting 0.99 60-foot times.
Left Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 6.009/239.02, Now #3
Right Lane: Dale Brand Runs 6.789/144.13, Now #4
Nice run by Cannister after a relatively soft launch, posting a 1.025 60-foot
time. Brand left hard with a 0.984 60-foot time and was 0.06 seconds quicker to
half track, but slowed at that point, the problem not evident from here.
Left Lane: Ronnie Midyette Runs 8.961/99.69, Now #6
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.099/234.70, Now #4
Midyette left hard, his 0.964 short time the quickest so far, but he slowed
before the 330-foot marker, probably tire shake. McMillen left softly, making a
clean run.
Left Lane: Joe Comella Runs 6.266/229.66, Now #6
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.962/235.23, Now #1
Thomas stepped to the front of the line after a 0.975 short time and a nice,
smooth run. Joe Comella lost ground all the way down the strip.
Left Lane: Chris Foster Runs 6.331/182.58, Now #8
Right Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 6.008/231.64, Now #4
Atchison was only a couple hundredths slower than Thomas at half track, but
lost another couple hundredths on the top half of the run.
Left Lane: Mike Comella Runs 5.931/235.64, Now #1
Right Lane: Mike Etter Runs 6.343/214.93, Now #10
Hello! Mike Comella started hard with a 0.974 60-foot time and then pulled
away from Etter at a rapid pace, posting a 190.54 mph speed at half track (fastest
at half track so far), taking the top spot with ease.
Left Lane: Dave Miller Runs 7.425/137.34, Now #13
Right Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.958/237.25, Now #2
Miller's car struggled all the way down the track. Newberry made a pretty
run with a 0.993 60-foot time to get him started.

Results for Qualifying 2
MARTIN, Mich. - MARTIN - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the Hooters
IHRA Drag Racing Series, 21st annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Northern Nationals listing
lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following
run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Mike Etter Runs 6.215/229.31, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.343/214.93, Was #11
Right Lane: Steve Ruda Runs 6.466/215.96, Now #12
No Prior Run
7:56 PM Both drivers had off-pace 60-foot times with tire spin, Etter a
1.028 and Ruda a 1.054.
Left Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 6.191/228.23, Now #9
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Chris Foster No Time, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.331/182.58, Was #11
Foster left before the tree. Dobbs waited and made a clean pass to get a run
on the books. That bumps the field up to 15 cars.
Left Lane: Wayne Butler Runs 6.655/216.55, Now #14
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Joe Comella Runs 6.250/227.84, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.266/229.66, Was #11
Butler rounds the field out to 16 cars, both drivers making clean, if
unspectacular, runs.
Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 7.486/127.92, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.099/234.70, Was #8
Right Lane: Ronnie Midyette Runs 6.055/210.37, Now #8
Best prior run: 8.961/99.69, Was #17
Midyette faced a bump time of 7.425 seconds to get in after a busted run in
the first session. He handled that challenge quite nicely with a smooth, straight
run. McMillen shook, danced, and fought to get down the track.
Left Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 6.031/231.44, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.008/231.64, Was #6
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 5.921/238.01, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.968/236.30, Was #4
Nice run by Rector, but he may have nipped a few pistons in the lights, the
headers trailing white smoke. The engine damage probably prevented him from
running in the eighties because he was on a quicker and faster pace at half track,
clocked at 3.865 seconds and 192.91 mph at the 660-foot marker. Atchison made
another clean run, but he's still looking for the combination.
Left Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 6.762/139.14, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.962/235.23, Was #4
Right Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 5.945/240.72, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.009/239.02, Was #7
Thomas left hard with a 0.963 60-foot time, but a stream of smoke trailed
from the injector area back over the top of the car at half track and he slowed.
Meanwhile, Cannister had another relatively soft launch, a 1.01 short time, but a
strong run in the middle of the track.
Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 5.880/237.21, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.789/144.13, Was #16
Right Lane: Dave Miller Runs 7.565/140.36, Now #17
Best prior run: 7.425/137.34, Was #17
Brand nailed this one, posting a 0.980 60-foot time and just a tick slower
than Thomas at 330 feet. The difference was that Brand's car kept on pulling,
quicker and almost as fast as Rector at half track with a 3.832/192.36 and clean
through the lights. Miller was off-pace from the start with a 1.09 60-foot
time.
Left Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.913/237.75, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.958/237.25, Was #5
Nice pass by Newberry, smooth and straight down the groove to take second
spot away from Rector by a few thousandths.
Left Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.927/235.43, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.997/233.32, Was #7
A pretty run by Vouros to close the session.

Results for Qualifying 3
MARTIN, Mich. - MARTIN - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the Hooters
IHRA Drag Racing Series, 21st annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Northern Nationals listing
lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following
run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.907/235.64, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.927/235.43, Was #4
Right Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 6.831/144.69, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.191/228.23, Was #11
1:33 PM The third qualifying session opens with Wayne Butler on the bubble
with a very vulnerable 6.655. Vouros continues to show strong performance here,
improving slightly on a smooth, straight run. Dobbs' car was soft on the launch
and lost a couple tenths to Vouros by 330 feet and a bunch more on the top half of
the run, coasting the last 300 feet.
Left Lane: Steve Ruda Runs 6.367/221.85, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.466/215.96, Was #15
Right Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 6.376/221.85, Now #16
No Prior Run
Bogolo finally got the car down the track - nothing to brag about, but a full
pass to bump Butler. Same with Ruda, improving a tenth to stay one spot off the
bubble.
Left Lane: Mark Poyser Runs 6.311/224.66, Now #14
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Ronnie Midyette Runs 6.004/233.40, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.055/210.37, Was #9
Poyser bumped Bogolo, putting Ruda on the bubble at 6.367. Nice run by
Midyette, stepping up once again.
Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 5.849/239.02, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.880/237.21, Was #1
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 24.309/29.29, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.921/238.01, Was #4
Rector was quicker to 60 feet, 0.976 to 0.980, but then Rector's car
shuddered and slowed, coasting slowly through the quarter mile. Meanwhile, Brand
parlayed his good launch into a super run, running 193.68 mph at half track in just
3.812 seconds.
Left Lane: Wayne Butler Runs 7.410/166.05, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.655/216.55, Was #18
Right Lane: Laurie Cannister No Time, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.945/240.72, Was #6
Butler's car did a dance on the rear tires, up on one rear tire, bouncing
back and up on the other. He pedaled, then drove it out. Cannister left before
the tree.
Left Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.941/235.76, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.962/235.23, Was #7
Right Lane: Chris Foster Runs 6.076/233.40, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.331/182.58, Was #15
Thomas' run looked good, quick off the line with a 0.969 60-foot time and
straight down the groove, but he was six hundredths of a second and three mph
behind Brand at half track. Nice improvement by Foster, the car cleanly down the
groove on a "full pull."
Left Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 6.003/230.57, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.008/231.64, Was #9
Right Lane: Joe Comella Runs 6.167/230.88, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.250/227.84, Was #14
Atchison is running like a bracket racer so far this weekend, another smooth
pass, quick in the first half with a 0.972 60-foot time, but not able to match the
"big dogs" on the rest of the run. Nice improvement by Comella, moving well away
from the bump spot.
Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 15.974/51.07, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.099/234.70, Was #11
Right Lane: Mike Comella Runs 6.007/234.70, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.931/235.64, Was #5
Comella was on a good pace initially, but sacrificed some aluminum parts on
the top end. McMillen launched and slowed immediately, his 1.117 60-foot time an
indicator of problems.
Left Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.968/236.17, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.913/237.75, Was #3
Right Lane: Dave Miller Runs 6.473/217.46, Now #18
Best prior run: 7.425/137.34, Was #19
Newberry's in the groove, three 5.90s, three high 230 mph speeds in three
attempts. Miller appears to be making headway with his problems, but he's still a
few tenths short of the race pace.

MARTIN, Mich. - MARTIN - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the
Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 21st annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Northern Nationals
listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order
following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 9.426/78.50, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.921/238.01, Was #4
Right Lane: Mike Etter Runs 6.786/226.20, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.215/229.31, Was #14
8:17 PM The final session opens with Steve Ruda on the bubble at 6.367.
Rector chattered the tires hard and, for the second time in a row, abandoned the
run. Etter also shook, posting a 1.513 60-foot time.
Left Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 5.874/241.41, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.945/240.72, Was #7
Right Lane: Dale Brand Runs 5.911/237.80, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.849/239.02, Was #1
Cannister's car fired, but the body would not latch down and the crew
thrashed to get it fastened down. She made a very short burnout, not even crossing
the line, and Brand patiently waited for her. The lady responded by outrunning the
#1 qualifier and moving into the second spot on the ladder on a nice run. Brand
was soft off the line, a 0.996 60-foot time, then ran hard the rest of the
way.
Left Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 6.139/228.15, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.191/228.23, Was #13
Right Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 6.049/229.39, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.003/230.57, Was #8
Dobbs went right down the groove to move one rung up the ladder. Atchison's
car drifted left and he smoothly brought it back, but lost a bit of elapsed time
doing so.
Left Lane: Dave Miller Runs 6.443/217.91, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.473/217.46, Was #18
Right Lane: Steve Ruda Runs 6.304/222.22, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.367/221.85, Was #16
Ruda made a nice improvement and moved off the bump spot, pushing Mark Poyser
down on the bubble. Miller improved slightly, but his weekend is over.
Left Lane: Chris Foster Runs 6.762/156.19, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.076/233.40, Was #10
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.988/235.23, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.941/235.76, Was #7
Foster's car drifted toward the centerline and he shut it down. Good run for
Thomas, making three good runs in four tries.
Left Lane: Ronnie Midyette Runs 5.926/235.23, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.004/233.40, Was #9
Right Lane: Wayne Butler Runs 6.994/141.27, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.655/216.55, Was #19
Butler lost a blower belt at half track. Midyette made a very nice run, but
paid the price, a huge cloud of white smoke spewing from the headers at the finish
line.
Left Lane: Joe Comella Runs 6.110/227.38, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.167/230.88, Was #13
Right Lane: Mark Poyser Runs 6.262/225.90, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.311/224.66, Was #16
Comella almost threw this one away, carding a 0.012 reaction time. Twelve
thousandths sooner and he wouldn't have gotten a time - instead, he improved
nicely. Poyser wasn't as dramatic, but also made a solid move up the ladder.
Left Lane: Mike Comella Runs 6.129/229.78, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.931/235.64, Was #7
Right Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 22.822/42.73, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.913/237.75, Was #4
Newberry launched and immediately slowed, the reason not clear. Comella had
an early red light, but not nearly as early as his brother.
Left Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 6.428/226.16, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.376/221.85, Was #17
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.080/234.13, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.099/234.70, Was #11
Bogolo came within inches of the wall and had to lift, ending his chances of
qualifying. McMillen ate some parts in the lights.
Right Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.937/235.06, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.907/235.64, Was #3
Rain is approaching the track - we may not get finished with Pro Mod and Top

Funny Car qualifying.

Results for Elimination Round 1
MARTIN, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Funny
Car at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 21st annual CARQUEST Auto Parts
Northern Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding Firebird) 0.456 5.933 235.39
(L) Steve Ruda (Ruda Automotive Avenger) 0.358(R) 6.307 222.95
1:12 PM On paper this was a walkover for Brand, and it was, Ruda taking a
shot at the tree and coming up short. Ruda still ran it through, then his fun
started, the chutes not working and the car still going at a pretty good pace when
he went off the end of the long shutdown area. The car went through the big
sandbox, turning right ad stopping before reaching the trees. Meanwhile, Brand
made a stout run, right down the groove, and his chutes worked perfectly.
(W) Mark Poyser (Halter Sales Mustang) 0.445 6.850 187.16
(L) Laurie Cannister (Girl Power Camaro) 0.223(R) 7.103 121.54
Strange race, Cannister with a huge red light, Poyser getting the biggest
upset of the round despite obvious car problems at half track.
(W) Mike Etter (Nerves of Steel Firebird) 1.160 6.350 225.97
(L) John Vouros (CompetitionPlus.com Firebird) 0.000(R) (Broke)
Vouros broke in the water, refusing to fire, and we had another big upset,
the #2 and #3 qualifiers out of here in the first round!
(W) Bob Newberry (Camaro) 0.524 5.941 235.27
(L) Larry Dobbs (Sports Truck Tent Corvette) 0.472 6.061 222.51
Newberry played it smart, not pushing the tree, but Dobbs made him work for
the win by running his best lap of the weekend. Newberry trailed to 330 feet, then
took the lead and kept it, winning by about a car length. Dobbs did a good job,
but came up a bit short against one of the legends in the sport.
(W) Jimmy Rector (Holbrook Performance Camaro) 0.526 5.972 221.56
(L) Joe Comella (SSI Firebird) 0.486 6.129 231.52
Rector had a huge lead at the 1,000-foot marker and then his chute came out a
bit early, scrubbing off about 10 mph. Fortunately for him, Comella was far enough
back that it didn't matter. Rector faces Newberry next round and Newberry will
have lane choice.
(W) Terry McMillen (Amalie Oil Avenger) 0.484 6.059 225.41
(L) Ronnie Midyette (K&W Racing Camaro) 0.660 5.958 235.19
Midyette was dead late and McMillen was not, earning the holeshot victory by
about a car length. McMillen hurt the engine on the top end and Midyette was
gaining fast, cutting McMillen's lead in half between half track and the line, but
it's very difficult to make up an almost two-tenths holeshot. McMillen's car left
a trail of oil from about 1,100 feet through the shutdown area. That will cost
McMillen 15 points for the "Black Flag" violation. McMillen will have lane choice
against Etter next round.
(W) Mike Comella (Avenger) 0.446 6.155 229.51
(L) Chris Foster (Foster Racing Avenger) 0.041(R) 6.062 229.12
Comella appeared to be way late, but that was because Foster was way early.
Nice reaction time and a nice pass for Comella, who lost ground to the quicker runs
in the first half of his run. Even so, it was more than quick to earn lane choice
against Poyser in round two.
(W) Mark Thomas (Ethanol Performs Avenger) 0.522 6.013 234.04
(L) Rob Atchison (PrideFC Firebird) 0.390(R) 5.994 230.69
Again, Thomas looked late until a check of the tree showed the red bulb
gleaming in Atchison's lane. Atchison gave it a good shot, but missed by a
hundredth of a second, going red when he probably didn't need it. Thomas advances,
but loses lane choice to Brand.

Results for Elimination Round 2
MARTIN, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Funny
Car at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 21st annual CARQUEST Auto Parts
Northern Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding Firebird) 0.485 5.921 237.00
(L) Mark Thomas (Ethanol Performs Avenger) 0.485 5.957 236.63
3:14 PM You would expect these two to put on a good race and they did not
disappoint, posting identical reaction times and welded together all the way down
the track. Brand's incremental margins: 60ft(0.009), 330 ft(0.017), 660ft(0.028),
1,000ft(0.034). MOV: 0.0362 seconds (approximately 13 feet), leading all the
way.
(W) Jimmy Rector (Holbrook Performance Camaro) 0.442 5.966 236.30
(L) Bob Newberry (Camaro) 0.495 5.931 236.38
Another as-expected good drag race, two legendary drivers showing their
stuff. Rector pulled off the holeshot victory with a great reaction time and then
refused to lift, even though his car was out of the groove and next to the wall.
Rector's incremental margins: 60ft(0.042), 330ft(0.047), 660ft(0.034),
1,000ft(0.021). MOV: 0.0189 seconds (approximately 7 feet). Rector faces brand
next round, Brand with lane choice and Rector seeking to avenge Brand breaking
Rector's win streak in New York, so we should have another good'un.
(W) Mike Comella (Avenger) 0.438 6.030 235.60
(L) Mark Poyser (Halter Sales Mustang) 0.422 6.290 223.62
Unreal reaction times in both lanes, but then Comella ran away from
Poyser.
(W) Terry McMillen (Amalie Oil Avenger) 0.537 6.166 185.92
(L) Mike Etter (Nerves of Steel Firebird) 0.535 6.337 226.81
These two left together, but then it was all McMillen to 1,000 feet, where
his engine went away. He coasted the final 300 feet for the win, but Etter cut his
margin in half in that final piece of the track. McMillen will be in the
semifinals against Comella, Comella with lane choice.

(W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding Firebird) 0.470 5.937 237.09
(L) Jimmy Rector (Holbrook Performance Camaro) 0.451 5.981 235.27
4:56 PM In New York, Rector beat himself with a red light. here he pulled
off a holeshot and Brand ran him down anyway. Brand's incremental margins:
60ft(-0.025), 330 ft(-0.010), 660ft(0.008), 1,000ft(0.019). MOV: 0.0251 seconds
(approximately 9 feet), so he passed Rector just before the half-track marker.
(W) Mike Comella (Avenger) 0.482 5.975 235.39
(L) Terry McMillen (Amalie Oil Avenger) 0.470 (Broke)
McMillen left first, but his car chattered the tires and crossed the
centerline, giving the win to Comella. Comella will race Brand for the title,

(W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding Firebird) 0.458 6.005 237.00
(L) Mike Comella (Avenger) 0.476 5.990 234.98
6:18 PM This was a great drag race, Brand with a small holeshot and just
enough on the other end to make it stick. Brand left first, but his 60-foot time
was awful, a 1.025, and Comella actually led all the way to the 1,000-foot marker,
brand taking the lead back in the lights. Brand's incremental margins (negative
means he's behind): 60ft(-0.032), 330 ft(-0.034), 660ft(-0.015), 1,000ft(-0.004).
MOV: 0.0036 seconds (approximately 15 inches).
