Results for Qualifying 1

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - BUDDS CREEK - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Sunoco Race Fuels Pro Stock at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 11th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Mid-Atlantic Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Wayne Bishop Runs 6.981/198.70, Now #1
Right Lane: Joel Bayless Runs 7.385/142.87, Now #2
1:40 PM It's 85 degrees, 67 percent relative humidity, the barometer 29.83 and falling, under partly cloudy skies.

The first pair of race cars down the track today have mixed results, Bishop with a straight, though off-pace, run, Bayless having problems getting the car to go straight and nearly crossing the centerline on the top end.
Left Lane: Floyd Cheek Runs 6.844/198.64, Now #2
Right Lane: Frank Gugliotta Runs 6.785/205.85, Now #1
Cheek's car shook a bit bout 200 feet out - otherwise, two clean runs.
Left Lane: Gary Henry Runs 8.861/107.24, Now #6
Right Lane: Frank Snellings Runs 6.974/201.10, Now #3
Snellings' first 2002 outing is in a new '02 Cavalier, red with yellow flames. Both Cavaliers went right down the lane...
Left Lane: Steve Williford Runs 6.747/207.15, Now #1
Right Lane: Chuck DeMory Runs 7.801/123.87, Now #7
DeMory almost took out the 1,000-foot marker, his car very loose in the middle of the run. Nice, straight run by Williford.
Left Lane: Tim Nabors Runs 9.031/104.23, Now #10
Right Lane: Pete Berner Runs 6.921/168.64, Now #4
Nabors looked good to about 300 feet, then got loose and slowed.
Left Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.758/206.64, Now #2
Right Lane: Rick Jones Runs 6.775/206.61, Now #3
Rice holds the NHRA record for Super Comp, making test runs at Columbus last weekend during a Lucas Oil event by entering the car as a Super Comp. Both drivers made nice runs here, straight and smooth.
Right Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.756/205.26, Now #2
Charlie Peppers was in the left lane. At first it looked like he broke in the water, but, after Spiess ran, the starting line crew cleaned up a small trail of "stuff" about 150 feet out in his lane. Nice run for Spiess, straight and without apparent problem.
Left Lane: Charlie Peppers Runs 6.828/203.12, Now #6
So Peppers got to run once the mess was cleaned up. Clean run, but off the pace a bit.
Left Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 6.771/209.36, Now #4
Right Lane: Doug Kirk Runs 6.774/207.40, Now #5
Nice side-by-side show, both cars clean and straight.
Left Lane: Elijah Morton Runs 10.219/88.56, Now #17
Right Lane: John Konigshofer Runs 10.464/84.10, Now #18
Double case of "shake and skate" here, both cars very loose and both drivers off the power early.
Left Lane: Jeff Dobbins Runs 6.737/209.23, Now #1
Right Lane: John Bartunek Runs 6.748/206.51, Now #3
Good runs, a pair.
Left Lane: Carl Baker Runs 6.710/208.07, Now #2
Right Lane: Jason Collins Runs 6.703/209.23, Now #1
Two more nice runs, better than the last pair.
Left Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.687/208.14, Now #2
Right Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 6.675/208.36, Now #1
Gahm leads Montecalvo by 158 points and Carl Baker by 198 - he can clinch here, and it's clear from these runs why they are 1-2 in the points.
Right Lane: Anthony Paone Runs 6.818/204.60, Now #14
Last car. The Canadian driver gets in, but near the bottom of the field with a soft launch.

Left Lane: Chuck DeMory Runs 11.403/75.44, Now #22

Demory's car launched like it was in the wrong gear. Henry left hard, with a 1.020 60-foot time, then shook and lifted.
Left Lane: Joel Bayless Runs 6.843/202.58, Now #17

Morton's car wanted to go left, then right, then left, then it tamed down a bit. Bayless lost a lot of ground in the first 330 feet.
Left Lane: Frank Snellings Runs 7.054/198.20, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.974/201.10, Was #20

Nice run by Berner. Bishop was way off the pace early.
Left Lane: Anthony Paone Runs 6.771/204.82, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.818/204.60, Was #17

Cheek is in Robert Killian's great-looking Mustang. Both drivers made good runs, but Paone's time may not hold up long.
Left Lane: Frank Gugliotta Runs 6.700/207.50, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.785/205.85, Was #18

Nice run by Gugliotta in the Yoak Racing Probe. Peppers went right down the groove and should be safely in the field.
Left Lane: Rick Jones Runs 6.757/207.02, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.775/206.61, Was #19
Right Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 6.663/209.88, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.771/209.36, Was #16
Holbrook's car did a bit of a dance on the launch, but he handled it smoothly. Jones went right down the groove, but that time probably won't keep him in the field long.
Left Lane: Doug Kirk Runs 6.715/208.23, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.774/207.40, Was #19
Right Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.722/205.82, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.758/206.64, Was #16
Rice's run looked a bit loose in the middle of the run after matching Holbrook's run to 330 feet. Kirk trailed Rice on the short end of the track, but outran him on the top end.
Left Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.721/206.39, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.756/205.26, Was #16
Right Lane: Steve Williford Runs 6.695/208.20, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.747/207.15, Was #13
Two solid runs, no visible problems.
Left Lane: John Bartunek Runs 6.700/207.37, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.748/206.51, Was #15
Right Lane: Jeff Dobbins Runs 6.704/209.69, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.737/209.23, Was #13
Not much wrong with these runs either. That moves the bump to 6.752.
Left Lane: Jason Collins Runs 6.679/209.85, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.703/209.23, Was #7
Nice run for Collins, moving up near the top.
Left Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 6.642/207.69, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.675/208.36, Was #2
Right Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.675/207.85, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.687/208.14, Was #4
Gahm's "magic number" is 95 - any combination of points earned by Gahm plus points not earned by Montecalvo over the next two races will clinch the title for Gahm. Looks like Montecalvo doesn't plan to leave much on the table, however...

Left Lane: Doug Kirk Runs 12.315/79.80, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.715/208.23, Was #17
Right Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 11.471/98.01, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.722/205.82, Was #18
Severe shake, both lanes.
Left Lane: Pete Berner Runs 6.643/209.62, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.706/208.23, Was #15
Right Lane: Carl Baker Runs 6.658/209.98, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.710/208.07, Was #16
Looks like it's either shake or a very good run, nothing in between. These two avoided the shakes and made nice runs.
Left Lane: John Bartunek Runs 6.693/208.91, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.700/207.37, Was #14
Right Lane: Jeff Dobbins Runs 13.445/59.03, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.704/209.69, Was #15
Dobbins was up on the wheelie bar hard and shaking, so he lifted. Good run for Bartunek.
Left Lane: Frank Gugliotta Runs 6.635/210.11, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.700/207.50, Was #14

Wow! Gugliotta nailed this on, a very nice run.
Left Lane: Jason Collins Runs 6.607/213.16, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.679/209.85, Was #11
Right Lane: Brian Gahm No Time, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.675/207.85, Was #10
Gahm didn't stage in time, the car stalling in pre-stage. Meanwhile, Collins made a very nice run. Gahm refired the engine and made a run, but got no time (the computer data may be useful anyway).
Left Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 9.805/104.48, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.642/207.69, Was #4
Right Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 6.631/211.56, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.663/209.88, Was #9
Montecalvo shook and slowed. Nice pass by Holbrook - tonight's evening session should produce a bunch of "fifties."

Left Lane: Tim Nabors Runs 6.615/210.18, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.649/209.10, Was #13

Results for Elimination Round 1

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Sunoco Race Fuels Pro Stock at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 11th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Mid-Atlantic Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Tim Nabors (Nabors Automotive Cavalier) 0.493 6.640 210.67
 (L) Jason Collins (Cougar) 0.444 7.483 126.02
12:20 PM It's 76 degrees, 53 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.33 and falling.

This is the first matchup this season for these two. Collins is fifth in points, ten points out of fourth. Nabors is not in the top ten. Collins cut the tree down, but shook and lost a lot of ground before the 330-foot marker.
 (W) John Montecalvo (Citgo Cavalier) 0.404 6.591 211.66
 (L) Rick Jones (Neon R/T) 0.521 6.642 211.20
Montecalvo won the only time they met previously this season. Montecalvo is second in points, but Gahm is only 62 points away from clinching the title. Jones started part way through the season, at Shreveport, but has not gone past the first round since that race. Montecalvo had a psychic light and then a great run for an easy win.
 (W) Gary Henry (Cavalier) 0.500 6.624 211.06
 (L) Frank Gugliotta (Yoak Racing Probe) 0.503 9.323 98.95
This is the first time they have raced each other this season. Neither is a factor in the championship. It's only the third race Henry has entered this year, losing in the first round at both of them. Gugliotta is in his seventh race of the year, but his only other appearance in eliminations was at the Toronto event, where he lost in the first round, so one of them will get their first round win of the year. They left together, but Gugliotta shook hard and slowed, Henry getting his first round win of the year.
 (W) John Konigshofer (Konigshofer M'Sports Couga0.477 6.653 211.03
 (L) Chris Holbrook (SRI Marble & Granite Cougar)0.477 7.205 208.07
First meeting this season between these two. Holbrook is eighth in points, eight points ahead of now-retired Ron Miller. Konigshofer is out of the top ten. They left together, but once again shake slowed the car in the right lane.
 (W) Charlie Peppers (Whaley Speed & Machine Must0.495 6.634 211.56
 (L) John Bartunek (Pearl River Auto Grand Am) 0.519 6.631 210.21
One-one split this season. Bartunek is sixth in points, Peppers is outside the top ten. Good drag race, Peppers solving the riddle of the right lane for a close win. Bartunek was quicker for 60 feet, but Peppers edged ahead after that. Peppers' margins: 60ft(-0.004), 330ft(0.000), 660ft(0.006), 1,000ft(0.014). MOV: 0.0210 seconds (approximately 6 feet). Peppers will have lane choice against Konigshofer next round.
 (W) Brian Gahm (NAPA Tools & Equip. Mustang) 0.481 6.591 211.73
 (L) Carl Baker (Summit Racing Cougar) 0.451 6.632 211.56
Baker is 2-1 against Gahm this year. Gahm leads the points and needs 62 more points to clinch the 2002 title. Baker is third, 47 points behind Montecalvo. Baker is mathematically still in contention, but realistically will finish second or third. Baker tried to make it 3-1 with a great light and led to half track, but Gahm edged ahead and held on for the win. Gahm's margins: 60ft(-0.011), 330 ft(-0.003), 660ft(0.004), 1,000ft(0.009).
