Left Lane: Mark Conner Runs 7.498/199.43, Now #10

12:32 PM - At the start of the round, the air temperature was 75 degrees, relative humidity was 55 percent and the barometric pressure was 30.33 and falling. This was the first time this year that Hopkins has made it into eliminations in the IHRA Nitro Harley division. The only other race he entered was at Norwalk in August but he did not qualify there. Prior to this race, Stordeur had 11 career wins in the IHRA Nitro Harley division, giving him the second highest career final-round winning total. He's been to the finals 17 times and has a final round winning percentage of 64.71 percent. Up to now this year, he's won 19 of the 25 eliminations rounds he's been in. Hopkins smoked the tire at 100 feet and backed off the throttle to get back some traction. Stordeur's bike shook the rear tire and he backed off. He started to get back on the throttle and drifted left, very close to the center line. Hopkins, who had slowed considerably, got back on the throttle and got back as much speed as he could to finish the run. Stordeur tried to get back into it but had to fight hard to keep from crossing the center line and was never able to get back to speed. This was Stordeur's first first-round loss of the season. Margin of victory: 2.9950 seconds (more than 100 feet).
 (W) Ray Price (Ray Price H-D '02 Dixie) 0.723 6.591 217.28
 (L) Mark Cox (Bojangles '00 Weekend) 0.471 7.113 161.57
Price and Cox have met only once before during this season. That meeting came three weeks ago at New England Dragway when Cox beat Price in the first round. Cox went on to lose to Steve Stordeur in the second round. This was the seventh elimination round for Cox this season and he has five losses and one win in his previous six appearances. Price has been in 18 rounds of eliminations before today and has won nine of those rounds. His only final round win of the year came at the rain-delayed ACDelco Nationals at Virginia International Raceway. Both riders used up a lot of track and had to fight to stay in the groove. Price was able to get a bit more out of his bike and will have lane choice over Hopkins in the next round.
 (W) Johnny Mancuso (Mancuso H-D '00 Weekend) 0.550 6.423 215.65
 (L) Bill Furr (Belt Drives Ltd '00 Dixie) 0.499 6.784 176.42
This is the fourth race that Furr has entered this year and the first time he made the field. Mancuso won the Nitro Harley division at Cordova in May and his eliminations round record this season is eight wins and eight losses. His first round record is six wins and four losses. Furr had the better light and left the starting line 51-thousandths of a second before Mancuso. But Mancuso had the power he needed to track Furr down and get the win.
 (W) Doug Vancil (Vance & Hines '00 Weekend) 0.494 6.541 196.59
 (L) Jamie Emery (A&W Mobile '96 Orangeburg) 0.508 6.715 197.62
Vancil has the top eliminations round winning percentage in the Nitro Harley division this year, with 20 wins and six losses in eliminations rounds for a win percentage of 76.9 percent. He's been in the finals 18 times in his career and has won 12 times. This year, he's lost only once in the first round of eliminations when Mark Conner beat him at Epping earlier this month. This is Emery's first appearance this year in Nitro Harley eliminations. Vancil had the better light and stayed out in front for the entire quarter mile. he gave up lane choice to Mancuso in the second round.
