Results for Qualifying 1

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - BUDDS CREEK - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 11th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Mid-Atlantic Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Ronnie Midyette Runs 6.081/233.20, Now #1
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 8.632/99.60, Now #2
2:20 PM it's 87 degrees, 63 percent relative humidity, the barometer 29.80 and falling, now under overcast skies.

Clean run for Midyette after some early shake.
Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 12.644/62.52, Now #4
Right Lane: Philip Hooper Runs 8.648/103.10, Now #3
Brand is running a new high-downforce body with no side panels - but the high-tech body didn't work too well, the front fender peeling back from the fender well and flapping in the breeze. Meanwhile, Hooper had an uneventful run down the track.
Left Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 9.401/87.94, Now #5
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 6.699/160.52, Now #2
Lots of ugly shake in both lanes, Thomas staying with it a lot longer than Cannister, then pedaling to keep from crossing the centerline.
Left Lane: John Vouros Runs 6.307/220.87, Now #2
Right Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 10.312/82.57, Now #7
Vouros shifted out of shake at the top of first gear. Tigges shook and decided to come back and try again later.
Left Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 9.052/92.51, Now #7
Right Lane: Chris Foster Runs 6.340/179.33, Now #3
Bogolo shook and slowed. Foster looked like he was on a good run, but ate some internal engine parts on the top end.
Left Lane: Dave Ray Runs 8.243/110.13, Now #6
Right Lane: Mark Poyser Runs 6.722/201.34, Now #5
Both cars shook and turned left. Ray got a good look at the wall, Poyser the centerline. Poyser pedaled, got sideways, pedaled, fishtailed, and finally got to the finish line.
Left Lane: Bobby Martindale Runs 6.373/194.72, Now #5
Right Lane: Charles Gambino Runs 6.132/229.74, Now #2
Two relatively clean runs, not much shake and both right down the groove.
Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.228/232.43, Now #4
Right Lane: Bunny Burkett Runs 6.108/237.88, Now #2
Burkett went right down the groove - she should be able to, she's been running on this track for years. Nice job of driving by McMillen, his car getting loose at least twice during the run and McMillen never lifting.
Left Lane: Mike Comella Runs 6.278/223.95, Now #6
Right Lane: David Rowe Runs 6.133/226.77, Now #4
Not much to say about these two runs, both cars went smoothly down the track with minimal shake.
Left Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 6.062/222.00, Now #1
Right Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 10.278/82.89, Now #18
Atchison is running a black-primered body here after scorching the paint job at Epping. Doesn't seem to hurt his performance any, making easily the best run of the round. Dobbs shook, got close to the centerline and lifted.
Left Lane: Robert Lupini No Time, Now #21
Lupini's engine went silent at the end of his burnout and he was towed off the other end.

Results for Qualifying 2

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - BUDDS CREEK - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 11th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Mid-Atlantic Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 5.932/238.30, Now #1
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 6.127/228.38, Now #5
Best prior run: 9.052/92.51, Was #15
7:15 PM It's 82 degrees, 72 percent relative humidity, the barometer 29.76 and steady, under the new Musco lights.

Rector's car was loose and crossed the centerline in the first round - not very far, but enough to DQ the run. He made up for it here with a nice pass, the first into the fives this weekend. Bogolo also made a good run, just not as quick as Rector's.
Left Lane: Philip Hooper Runs 6.602/206.04, Now #13
Best prior run: 8.648/103.10, Was #16
Right Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 6.504/145.17, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.062/222.00, Was #2
Hooper's car sports a "spiffy" yellow and white paint scheme, with purple flames. Atchison was on a good run here until his chute shook loose at half track. Hooper shook and danced early. He pedaled out of it, but lost a lot of elapsed time.
Left Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 6.102/234.17, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.699/160.52, Was #14
Right Lane: Dave Ray Runs 7.345/141.71, Now #16
Best prior run: 8.243/110.13, Was #16
Ray's car was all over the lane and came very close to crossing the centerline. Thomas also shook and skated around, not as severely as Ray, but enough to hurt his elapsed time.
Left Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 6.061/224.17, Now #2
Best prior run: 10.312/82.57, Was #19
Right Lane: Dale Brand Runs 6.099/192.22, Now #5
Best prior run: 12.644/62.52, Was #20
Brand's trick, new lightweight, high downforce body delaminated on his first run down the track, the skin over the door area peeling away from the inner sandwich material as soon as he launched. He will be running "old faithful" the rest of the event. His car trailed smoke on the top end, but the track was clean. Meanwhile, Tigges made a solid run, clean and straight, but he trailed Brand to 1,000 feet.
Left Lane: Chris Foster Runs 5.993/236.17, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.340/179.33, Was #14
Right Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 5.873/241.93, Now #1
Best prior run: 9.401/87.94, Was #19
Cannister made the first representative run of the weekend, the car away quickly (a 0.968 60-foot time) and then smoothly down the middle of the groove with no wasted motion. By comparison, Foster's run looked slow, but he was the third driver into the fives this weekend.
Left Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 8.782/101.77, Now #20
Best prior run: 10.278/82.89, Was #20
Right Lane: Ronnie Midyette Runs 6.038/234.37, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.081/233.20, Was #6
Dobbs shook early and was off the power. Clean pass for Midyette with no visible problems.
Left Lane: David Rowe Runs 9.498/80.06, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.133/226.77, Was #12
Right Lane: Bobby Martindale No Time, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.373/194.72, Was #16
Martindale's car made a left turn and took out the 330-foot marker, ahead of Rowe, forcing Rowe to abort the run to avoid a collision.
Left Lane: Mark Poyser Runs 11.418/70.73, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.722/201.34, Was #17
Right Lane: John Vouros Runs 6.107/231.83, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.307/220.87, Was #14
Poyser shook and shut down. Vouros left hard, then had to lift to steer away from the wall.
Left Lane: Charles Gambino Runs 6.101/231.83, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.132/229.74, Was #10
Nice pass by Gambino to close the session.
Left Lane: Joe Comella Runs 6.261/229.70, Now #13
                                  No Prior Run
Oops, there was one more car hiding back there...Comella made a straight, clean run. Now the session is over.

Results for Elimination Round 1

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Funny Car at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 11th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Mid-Atlantic Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Jimmy Rector (Holbrook Performance Camaro) 0.456 5.857 242.89
 (L) Fred Tigges (Tigges Racing Camaro) 0.502 5.813 243.50
12:42 PM These two only met once before this season, in the semifinals at Norwalk. Rector won that one enroute to his sixth event win of the season. Rector leads Dale Brand by 89 points, winning seven of the ten prior events this year. His only final round loss was to Brand, at the Toronto race. Rector stole this one at the starting line, Tigges running his best ET of the year. Rector's margins: 60ft(0.009), 330 ft(0.003), 660ft(0.005), 1,000ft(0.004). MOV: 0.0020 seconds (approximately 9 inches).
 (W) Laurie Cannister (Girl Power Camaro) 0.525 5.791 244.87
 (L) Dave Ray (Butler Steel Bldgs Mustang) 0.460 6.036 231.44
Only other meeting this year was in the first round at Epping, Cannister winning that one. Cannister can finish no better than third and no worse than fourth this year, but can extend her lead over Mark Thomas in the points here because he failed to qualify for eliminations. Ray left first and that was the last time he led, Cannister making an awesome run to reset the IHRA speed record for the category. She has yet to win an event in Funny Car, but she's off to a good start.
 (W) Larry Dobbs (Sportz Truck Tent Corvette) 0.495 6.042 234.21
 (L) Tony Bogolo (Custom Detail & Truck Wash Achi0.723 6.055 238.81
These two have not met before during this season. They are only 10 points apart for 11th in the points, so the winner gets the position. Bogolo was uncharacteristically late and Dobbs moves into 11th in the points.
 (W) Ronnie Midyette (K&W Racing Camaro) 0.501 6.021 236.17
 (L) Chris Foster (Foster Racing Avenger) 0.480 10.088 83.83
Midyette won their only prior faceoff this year. Foster has only gone past the first round once this year, Midyette has had mixed results, qualifying at all eleven events so far this year and going as far as the semifinals once (Leicester). Foster left first, then shook and lifted.
 (W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding Firebird) 0.483 5.782 242.67
 (L) Mark Poyser (Halter Sales Mustang) 0.442 16.572 46.26
Brand trails Jimmy Rector by 89 points and has been second in the points since the second race of the year, going to eight final rounds in the first ten races. Unfortunately, he lost five of the eight to Rector in a classic rivalry. He defeated Poyser in their only prior meeting this year, in the first round at Norwalk. Brand drew his line in the ground with a great run, Poyser shaking hard and slowing immediately. Brand faces Midyette next round and will have lane choice.
 (W) Bunny Burkett (Holbrook Performance Avenger)0.583 5.993 240.38
 (L) Rob Atchison (PrideFC Firebird) 0.467 8.987 81.41
These two met once before during this season, at Virginia. Burkett wonning and then leaving by helicopter for a match race here at MIR. Atchison is sixth in points, trailing Mike Comella by just three points, but he won't gain any ground today. Atchison's car went into a wheelie, shaking. He pedaled and the wheels went up again, then the chute came out. Meanwhile, Burkett made her quickest run of the weekend, running her best speed of the year, and she will have lane choice against Dobbs in the second round. Needless to say, her loyal fans at MIR were cheering wildly at the upset victory.
 (W) John Vouros (CompetitionPlus.com Firebird) 0.442 5.944 232.99
 (L) Mike Comella (Avenger) 0.138(R) 10.507 98.21
These two have not faced each other this season. Comella is fifth in points, just three points ahead of Rob Atchison. Vouros is ninth, chasing Ronnie Midyette and Terry McMillen. Comella staged, then Vouros staged, then Comella's car lurched forward and turned on the red bulb. Easy win for Vouros, but he nipped a few pistons in the lights and will have to thrash to make the turnaround for round two, where he will not have lane choice when he faces Cannister.
 (W) Terry McMillen (Amalie Oil Avenger) 0.478 5.993 235.93
 (L) Joe Comella (SSI Firebird) 0.487 6.033 235.80
Last pair. This is the first time these two have faced each other this season, Comella an infrequent participant. McMillen is seventh in points, trailing Rob Atchison by 33 points, and could finish as high as fifth. McMillen beat Comella off the line by a small margin, but fell further behind as they went down the track to lose by half a car length. McMillen advances to face Rector, Rector with lane choice.

Results for Elimination Round 2

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Funny Car at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 11th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Mid-Atlantic Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding Firebird) 0.484 5.808 241.80
 (L) Ronnie Midyette (K&W Racing Camaro) 0.490 5.987 236.84
3:03 PM Met once before this year, in Shreveport, Brand was the victor. Midyette has been past the second round just once this year, Brand has done so at all ten. Make that eleven. Midyette made a race of it, but could not run with Brand on the top end.
 (W) Laurie Cannister (Girl Power Camaro) 0.457 5.837 246.26
 (L) John Vouros (CompetitionPlus.com Firebird) 0.464 6.023 223.39
Surprisingly, this is the first time they have met this year. Cannister has been in five semifinals this year, Vouros hasn't gone past the second round so far. It was a good race to half track, then Cannister pulled away and will be in her first final round of the year. She reset the speed record once again, but lost lane choice to Brand.
 (W) Jimmy Rector (Holbrook Performance Camaro) 0.551 5.871 241.58
 (L) Terry McMillen (Amalie Oil Avenger) 0.380(R) 9.924 85.35
Rector came in with a 2-0 record against McMillen this year and it quickly became 3-0 when McMillen pulled the trigger too soon.
 (W) Bunny Burkett (Holbrook Performance Avenger)0.628 6.066 233.44
 (L) Larry Dobbs (Sportz Truck Tent Corvette) 0.557 7.015 141.03
No prior faceoffs this season. This is only the second time either driver has gone past the first round this year and neither has been in the semifinals. Both shook, but Dobbs slipped out of the groove, near the wall, and Burkett stayed in the groove for a surprisingly easy win. She faces Rector in the semifinals, Rector with lane choice.

Results for Elimination Round 3

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3 eliminations in Funny Car at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 11th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Mid-Atlantic Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Jimmy Rector (Holbrook Performance Camaro) 0.474 5.861 242.10
 (L) Bunny Burkett (Holbrook Performance Avenger)0.537 5.903 241.37
4:31 PM This is the first time they have met this year. Rector has been in the semifinals at nine of the first ten events, going on to the finals at eight of them. Burkett only entered three prior races this year, getting past the first round just once. Rector got the starting line edge, but Burkett's team was cheering and dancing anyway, Burkett running her best lap of the year to keep Rector honest. Rector won by over a car length, but the lady has nothing to be ashamed of.
 (W) Laurie Cannister (Girl Power Camaro) 0.487 5.781 246.03
 (L) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding Firebird) 0.464 5.819 241.20
These two met three times in prior events this season, all in the semifinals. Brand was the victor in all three. It should have been four times. They would have faced off at Shreveport, but Cannister lost an engine on the second-round burnout for a bye run and Brand was unopposed in the semifinals. Cannister got a measure of revenge here, Brand away first, but Cannister with the performance edge she last showed at Shreveport. It was a close race, Rector leading all the way to the 1,000-foot marker, Cannister nipping him at the line. Her margins: 60ft(-0.014), 330ft(-0.021), 660ft(-0.014), 1,000ft(-0.001). MOV: 0.0150 seconds (approximately 5 feet). Cannister ran low ET of the weekend for the win and will have lane choice against Rector in the final round, seeking her first-ever win in Funny Car.
