Right Lane: Paul Zgoda Runs 6.591/214.54, Now #21
                                  No Prior Run
Zgoda was slow off the starting line and didn't improve for the rest of the run. After three rounds, he has only one qualifying time and it is not enough to get into the field.

He was unable to improve his ET and will stay on the bubble. With seven cars sitting outside the field, Ray will have to wait and see if he'll survive. Left Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 5.964/239.93, Now #4

Left Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 6.014/227.04, Now #10

Bogolo moved up two spots in the qualifying order and smoked the engine as he crossed the finish line. McMillen had a clean run but was 34 thousandths of a second slower than his best run from the second round last night.
Left Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 6.052/237.84, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.103/231.06, Was #15

Best prior run: 6.151/229.70, Was #18
Dobbs was outside the field and needed to run better than 6.131 seconds so he could come back and race tomorrow. Tigges was in the 15th place in the order and moved up two spots, so he should be safe from being bumped. Dobbs had his slowest time of the weekend just when he needed to run quicker than he has in the first three rounds, so he'll be going home.
Left Lane: Charles Gambino Runs 6.048/231.89, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.101/232.91, Was #15

Best prior run: 5.953/233.58, Was #3
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.990/234.80, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.026/235.04, Was #12
Both drivers were safely in the field and looking to improve their positions. Both accomplished what they wanted to do. Vouros had a really strong run to move up one spot. He is now sitting in the second spot but Bob Newberry has yet to make his final attempt. Thomas also ran well and moved up three spots.
Left Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 5.961/233.94, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.964/235.35, Was #6
Right Lane: Dale Brand Runs 5.891/236.71, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.979/237.78, Was #7
The ETs have been dropping with the temperature this evening. Brand had a clean run, right down the middle of the track and he took over the number one spot. Newberry and Rector still have their final runs coming, so Brand will have to wait and see if ET keeps him in the top spot. Newberry is not in the lanes, so he may not be making a final qualifying run this evening. Atchison ran three thousandths quicker than his previous best, but it did not affect his position.
Left Lane: Paul Zgoda Runs 6.225/226.70, Now #19
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Vincent Rastelli Runs 8.605/107.53, Now #22
Best prior run: 6.708/222.00, Was #21
Zgoda did not make a first round qualifying attempt. He made runs in the second and third rounds but bypassed the scales so his ETs didn't count. This time, in his final chance to make the field, he was nearly a tenth of a second off the bump time so he'll be going home. Rastelli shook the tires and backed off.
Left Lane: David Rowe Runs 6.099/229.29, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.086/218.28, Was #15
Right Lane: Mike Etter Runs 6.106/230.00, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.444/177.20, Was #21
Etter got out of the groove and came close to the wall. he stayed with it and was quick enough to bump McNeil from the field. He's now on the bubble with a bump time of 6.106 seconds.
Left Lane: Mike Comella Runs 6.097/233.03, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.952/236.59, Was #4
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 11.475/72.61, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.983/236.53, Was #8
Rector has been inconsistent this weekend and has had only one good run in four attempts. This time, he shook the tires, got loose and got out of the groove so he had to back off. He'll start eliminations from the middle of the field. Comella was clean but did not improve his time.
Right Lane: Dan Roman Runs 6.156/231.36, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.229/227.84, Was #21
Roman needed to beat the bump time of 6.106 seconds. He's run quicker than that before, so he was capable. He was unable to do it this evening so he'll be going home. Newberry had the number one spot before this round and decided not to make a fourth qualifying run so he'll start eliminations in the second spot.

Results for Elimination Round 1

LEICESTER, N.Y. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Funny Car at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 14th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Empire Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding Firebird) 0.497 5.943 238.03
 (L) Mike Etter (Nerves of Steel Firebird) 0.572 6.179 198.01
12:20 PM - At the start of the round, the temperature was 82 degrees at 74 percent humidity. Barometric pressure was 30.00 and steady. Brand took over the number one spot in qualifying last night. Etter worked hard to get into the show with a wild run last night in which he came very close to the wall but stayed with it for the 16th spot. These were two clean runs but Brand was quicker the entire way. Etter broke a blower belt at the end of the run.
 (W) Bob Newberry (Camaro) 0.530 5.922 239.74
 (L) David Rowe (Boston Stock Exchg Cutlass) 0.519 6.096 230.94
Both drivers had good, clean runs but Newberry was quicker. He'll move on to round two. Newberry's margins: 60ft(-0.032), 330ft(0.017), 660ft(0.068), 1,000ft(0.123). Margin of victory: 0.1638 seconds (approximately 55 feet).
 (W) John Vouros (CompetitionPlus.com Firebird) 0.464 5.934 237.46
 (L) Fred Tigges (Tigges Racing Camaro) 0.500 6.008 240.64
Vouros grew up in the area around this drag strip so this is his home track. Tigges shook the tires a bit at 600 feet. He ran 44 thousandths quicker than he qualified but it wasn't enough to beat Vouros. Vouros's margins: 60 feet(0.075), 330ft(0.114), 660ft(0.123), 1,000ft(0.120). Margin of victory: 0.1108 seconds (approximately 39 feet).
 (W) Mike Comella (Avenger) 0.484 6.023 234.74
 (L) Charles Gambino (Digital2100.com Corvette) 0.519 14.651 81.33
Gambino shook the tires hard as he came off the starting line and shut it down. Comella skated all over the track for the last 600 feet but he got the win.
 (W) Tony Bogolo (McCowan M'Sports Achieva) 0.524 6.003 238.79
 (L) Chris Foster (Foster Racing Avenger) 0.522 7.197 140.49
Both Bogolo and Foster had their best qualifying run in the final session last night, under much different weather conditions. Their ETs were close in the first qualifying session Friday afternoon. In the heat yesterday, only Foster made a full run down the track. Today, Foster shook the tires and got really loose. He fishtailed severely and came close to smacking the guard rail before he lifted. Bogolo shook his tires but stayed with it for the win and for lane choice over Comella in the next round.
 (W) Ronnie Midyette (K&W Racing Camaro) 0.502 6.020 234.13
 (L) Rob Atchison (PrideFC Firebird) 0.587 6.054 232.79
Atchison had a clean run but didn't have the speed he needed. Midyette was clean too. He got the win but lost lane choice to Vouros in round two. Midyette's margins: 60ft(0.095), 330 ft(0.116), 660ft(0.117), 1,000ft(0.114). Margin of victory: 0.1195 seconds (approximately 41 feet).
 (W) Laurie Cannister (Girl Power Camaro) 0.503 5.995 240.38
 (L) Terry McMillen (Amalie Oil Avenger) 0.510 6.092 232.07
Cannister struggled during the first three rounds of qualifying but put it all together in the final round last night. In this round of eliminations, she had a strong, clean run that gave her the win but she was not quick enough to take lane choice over Bob Newberry in the second round. Cannister's margins: 60ft(0.014), 330ft(0.052), 660ft(0.064), 1,000ft(0.082). Margin of victory: 0.1045 seconds (approximately 36 feet).
 (W) Jimmy Rector (Holbrook Performance Camaro) 0.473 5.920 240.12
 (L) Mark Thomas (Ethanol Performs Avenger) 0.445 6.076 232.85
Rector has been unbeaten all season but had some problems during qualifying this weekend. Thomas beat him at the tree and had a clean run but Rector had the power he needed to make up the difference and more. With this win, Rector has won 21 straight rounds of eliminations. Rector's margins: 60ft(0.004), 330ft(0.039), 660ft(0.070), 1,000ft(0.101). Margin of victory: 0.1281 seconds (approximately 44 feet).
