Results for Qualifying 1

GRAND BEND, Ont. - GRAND BEND - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 3rd annual Mopar Performance Parts Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Louie Allison Runs 11.319/76.02, Now #2
Right Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 4.847/298.30, Now #1
7:56 PM The last time Allison went down this track, he ended up doing a full "blowover," the front end of the car climbing skyward until the force of the air flipped it over backward.

Meanwhile, Litton has been busy, fielding a second car for J.R. Todd to drive here this weekend - but J.R. is on the line and not in a driving suit, so we may not see him this round.

Allison launched and shook hard before lifting. No problems were visible in Litton's lane with a relatively soft 0.889 60-foot time and a conservative run to open the show.
Left Lane: Roger Dean Runs 9.975/80.21, Now #3
Right Lane: John Sipple Runs 5.488/235.35, Now #2
Dean shook hard, pedaled, and lost the blower belt. Sipple's car dropped a couple cylinders early and never had a chance, but he ran it all the way through without any apparent damage.
Left Lane: Grant Flowers No Time, Now #6
Right Lane: Paul Romine Runs 14.313/83.41, Now #5
Flowers' car went nowhere on the launch, coasting to a stop before reaching the finish line. Lots of tire smoke for Romine, immediately, his 60-foot time a 1.383.
Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.615/317.23, Now #1
Right Lane: Vicky Fanning Runs 6.055/190.75, Now #4
Jim Bailey is doing color commentary on the PA system and just said, "The only time you can pass that Werner car is on the turnpike," referring to Millican's strong showing last year and almost-perfect season this year. This run demonstrated what he was talking about, the Werner dragster smoothly down the groove with the quickest pass in Canadian drag racing history, eclipsing Bruce Litton's one-year-old track record by four-hundredths of a second. He posted a 0.850 60-foot time and was going 263.23 mph at half track, in just 3.104 seconds. Fanning was two tenths slower over the first 60 feet and then steadily lost ground to the quick, blue dragster.

Results for Qualifying 3

GRAND BEND, Ont. - GRAND BEND - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Fuel at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, Third annual Mopar Performance Parts Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Grant Flowers Runs 6.023/216.24, Now #6
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: John Sipple Runs 5.328/255.82, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.488/235.35, Was #3
9:08 PM Flowers' car slowed and stopped short of the finish line in the first session and he didn't make an attempt in the second. Sipple made a good lap in the first and also skipped the second. Flowers pedaled several times during this run, starting about 200 feet out. Sipple went right down the groove with his best elapsed time ever - nothing spectacular, but that fledgling team is getting more experience with every run they make. Flowers' car had a fire in the diaper, so he won't be docked 15 points and lose the 5 bonus points.
Left Lane: Louie Allison Runs 4.960/288.09, Now #3
Best prior run: 8.979/85.63, Was #9
Right Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 4.796/276.75, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.847/298.30, Was #2
Just-bumped Allison made a full pass to get back in, bumping Paul Romine from the field, while Litton made a very nice run, the header flames going out a bit before the finish line, hurting the speed, but not the elapsed time. That puts Vicky Fanning on the bubble at 6.055.
Left Lane: Roger Dean Runs 11.453/80.78, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.628/228.19, Was #5
Right Lane: Vicky Fanning Runs 5.871/210.03, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.055/190.75, Was #8
Dean's car looked normal when he launched, but he ventilated the engine just off the line, the header flames turning into brief flames atop the engine, oil and engine pieces scattered all over the track near the starting line. Meanwhile, Fanning stepped up and away from the bump spot, giving the honors to Flowers at 6.023. Dean loses 15 points plus 5 bonus points for the "black flag" oildown.
Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.658/285.44, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.615/317.23, Was #1
Right Lane: Paul Romine Runs 4.858/297.22, Now #3
Best prior run: 8.012/99.04, Was #9
Romine had to sit and watch the cleanup, about half an hour's worth, which certainly didn't help calm his butterflies any. All he needed to do was get down the track, but that eluded him in the first two sessions. So much for butterflies - a nice side-by-side show, Millican's header flames going out well before the finish line and Romine driving it out the back door, two full passes to wrap up the competition portion of the Mac Tools "Night of Fire." That bumped Flowers from the field.

Results for Elimination Round 1

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Top Fuel at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, Third annual Mopar Performance Parts Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Louie Allison (Vista Foods Dragster) 0.548 5.591 231.36
 (L) John Sipple (Wellness Group Dragster) 0.577 (Broke)
12:34 PM This was wild one, Allison up in smoke after 200 feet or so and Sipple apparently a winner, but left of the groove and drifting toward the wall. Sipple's car apparently brushed the wall just before the finish line, DQ'ing his run, so Allison is the winner. Several different observers checked the tire tracks and the wall to confirm the contact, Sipple's car showing no sign of any contact.
 (W) Bruce Litton (Lucas Oil Dragster) 0.591 4.807 299.20
 (L) J.R. Todd (Dragster) 0.000(R) (Broke)
Todd did not answer the call, so Litton got a solo run. It was a nice run, with a bit of tire shake on the launch and "black tracking" all the way down the track.
 (W) Paul Romine (CARQUEST Auto Parts Dragster) 0.541 4.821 290.32
 (L) Roger Dean (Rupert Oil Dragster) 0.000(R) (Broke)
Romine also got a "break single," Dean unable to answer the call after grenading an engine in the final qualifying session. The run was a lot like Litton's, just a bit of tire shake on the launch and twin black tracks snaking down the middle of the lane. Litton was a bit quicker and will have lane choice against Romine next round.
 (W) Clay Millican (Werner Dragster) 0.493 4.780 303.43
 (L) Vicky Fanning (All City Graphix Dragster) 0.000(R) (Broke)
Fanning made her burnout, was unable to back up, tried to drive out the other end, and stopped half way down the shutdown area. Meanwhile, Millican fired and made his burnout, then backed up and eventually shut it off while the track crew removed Fanning's car from the track. The crew went back to the pits to get more fuel and refueled Millican's car just behind the water box. Millican then did a second, short burnout and made a nice, smooth, straight run for the win and lane choice against Allison in the semifinals.

Results for Elimination Round 2

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Top Fuel at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, Third annual Mopar Performance Parts Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Paul Romine (CARQUEST Auto Parts Dragster) 0.476 5.566 249.16
 (L) Bruce Litton (Lucas Oil Dragster) 0.498 5.544 227.21
2:54 PM This quickly turned into a pedaling contest, both cars chattering the tires and then going up in smoke. Both drivers pedaled, and pedaled, and pedaled, the race obscured by tire smoke. When the smoke cleared, the win light was on in Romine's lane, even though his tire tracks showed his crooked path was more crooked than Litton's, the twin tracks going out toward the centerline, back to the right edge of the groove, back toward the centerline again, and back to the right again. How close was it? Here are the incremental margins (negative means Romine was behind): 60ft(0.052), 330ft(0.001), 660ft(-0.081), 990ft(-0.108). MOV: 0.0003 seconds (approximately 1 inches).
 (W) Clay Millican (Werner Dragster) 0.521 4.814 270.43
 (L) Louie Allison (Vista Foods Dragster) 0.000(R) (Broke)
Allison was a no-show and Millican's team used this pass as a tuning pass for the final round. Millican will have lane choice against Romine, the car cleanly down the track on a relatively soft run, only running 252 mph at half track

Sunday

Results for Final Round

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 3 eliminations in Top Fuel at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, Third annual Mopar Performance Parts Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Clay Millican (Werner Dragster) 0.509 4.868 301.70
 (L) Paul Romine (CARQUEST Auto Parts Dragster) 0.480 11.075 85.62
5:03 PM After a short delay while oil from the Pro Mod final was cleaned up, these two fired, the exhaust from Romine's engine sending a crew member's hat sailing high in the air and over into the spectator area - instant souvenir. Once again Romine went up in smoke and once again the Werner Enterprises Top Fuel Dragster went right down the middle of the groove on a smooth, quick run. Millican's car was much softer than usual on this run, with a 0.906 60-foot time and the mid-track speed just 248.34 mph, but a win is a win is a ...Millican stays undefeated for the season, fifteen round wins and five event wins in a row. Now the question is not whether he will win the championship, it's whether he will do so with a twelve-event-win season!
