GRAND BEND, Ont. - GRAND BEND - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Sunoco Race Fuels
Pro Stock at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 3rd annual Mopar Performance
Parts Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed
time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Anthony Paone Runs 6.738/204.73, Now #1
Right Lane: Billy Huff Runs 9.517/88.67, Now #2
11:29 AM Something happened to Huff around the 330-foot mark because he
slowed abruptly. Clean opening run for Paone. It's sunny and 70 degrees today,
with high pressure dominating the weather forecasts.
Left Lane: Charlie Peppers Runs 6.591/209.83, Now #1
Right Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 6.592/208.42, Now #2
Wow! Undoubtedly a career-best run for Peppers, by about a tenth of a
second. The run didn't look that good because he spotted Montecalvo a tenth and a
half at the starting line.
Left Lane: Jason Collins No Time, Now #6
Right Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.596/209.39, Now #3
Collins launched into severe shake and then the engine went silent. Nice
pass by Rice, 6.59s a very popular number in this opening round.
Left Lane: Jeff Dobbins Runs 7.927/115.13, Now #6
Right Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 6.596/209.59, Now #3
There was a big puff of black smoke from Dobbins' car at half track after a
very soft launch.
Left Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.632/208.67, Now #6
Right Lane: Carl Baker Runs 6.617/209.54, Now #5
Two clean runs...
Left Lane: Elijah Morton Runs 6.605/210.08, Now #5
Right Lane: Larry O'Brien Runs 6.706/206.65, Now #8
O'Brien was a tick or two slower at each incremental timer...
Left Lane: Rick Jones Runs 6.647/207.56, Now #8
Right Lane: Chuck DeMory Runs 7.299/180.97, Now #11
DeMory was slow off the line and never did come up to speed.
Left Lane: Tim Nabors Runs 6.640/207.13, Now #8
Right Lane: Wally Stroupe Runs 6.682/206.80, Now #10
Two clean runs, but well off the pace of the top cars in the field.
Left Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.565/211.61, Now #1
Right Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.662/207.80, Now #11
We have a new leader...Gahm resets both ends of the Grand Bend Pro Stock
record book on a very nice run - previous holders Gene Wilson and John Konigshofer.
It's also a season-best elapsed time for Gahm.
Left Lane: Doug Kirk Runs 6.586/210.52, Now #2
Right Lane: Frank Gugliotta Runs 7.315/150.50, Now #17
Nice run by Kirk, but he can't catch Gahm. Gugliotta was slow off the line
and never did pick it up.
Left Lane: John Bartunek Runs 6.631/208.09, Now #9
Last car and Bartunek lands it right in the middle of the pack.

Left Lane: Frank Gugliotta Runs 6.690/203.98, Now #15
No Prior Run
Right Lane: John Bartunek Runs 6.638/207.94, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.631/208.09, Was #9
6:08 PM Gugliotta made a very slow pass in the first round and bypassed the
scales. Nice run here to get in the field, but that time probably won't hold up.
Bartunek is consistent, another "63"
Left Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 9.654/92.99, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.662/207.80, Was #13
Right Lane: Doug Kirk Runs 6.593/210.28, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.586/210.52, Was #2
The bump is now a 6.706, Larry O'Brien. No help in either lane, Spiess' car
got very out of shape at the tree and he had to lift.
Left Lane: Wally Stroupe Runs 6.665/207.32, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.682/206.80, Was #14
Right Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.599/210.62, Now #1

good run.
Left Lane: Chuck DeMory Runs 6.777/204.77, Now #18
Best prior run: 7.299/180.97, Was #18
Right Lane: Anthony Paone Runs 7.078/205.43, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.738/204.73, Was #17
DeMory's car did a sidestep on the launch. Paone left early and then spun
the tires, posting a 1.388 60-foot time.
Left Lane: Larry O'Brien Runs 7.741/127.55, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.706/206.65, Was #16
Right Lane: Tim Nabors Runs 6.612/202.61, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.640/207.13, Was #11
Good run by Nabors, a 1.012 60-foot time among the quickest so far this
round. O'Brien's 1.07 short time led to an off-pace 330-foot time and a slow run.
He remained on the bubble.
Left Lane: Billy Huff Runs 6.727/183.18, Now #17
Best prior run: 9.517/88.67, Was #20
Right Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.604/209.15, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.632/208.67, Was #11
Huff was close to 1,000 feet, then lost a bunch of ground. Nice run by
Miller to step into the top half of the field.
Left Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 6.594/210.18, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.596/209.59, Was #5

Both drivers almost match their first runs...
Left Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.630/209.49, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.596/209.39, Was #6
Right Lane: Elijah Morton Runs 7.017/198.06, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.605/210.08, Was #8
The rear of Rice's car danced left and right for the first 400 feet. Morton
was slow off the line and never did pick it back up.
Left Lane: Carl Baker Runs 17.937/42.91, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.617/209.54, Was #10
Right Lane: Charlie Peppers Runs 9.287/93.53, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.591/209.83, Was #3
Shake in both lanes, Peppers getting very out of shape before he lifted.
Left Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 6.586/209.93, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.592/208.42, Was #4
Right Lane: Jeff Dobbins Runs 6.640/209.98, Now #12
Best prior run: 7.927/115.13, Was #20
It's 78 degrees, 45 percent relative humidity. Finally a pair of
improvements, Dobbins bumping O'Brien and Montecalvo moving one rung closer to the
top of the ladder.
Right Lane: Jason Collins Runs 6.669/209.93, Now #16
No Prior Run

Performance Parts Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver
name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best

Left Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 6.629/209.25, Now #3

Right Lane: Jason Collins Runs 6.643/210.18, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.669/209.93, Was #16
1:05 PM It's 72 degrees, relative humidity 74 percent. Montecalvo fails to
improve, Collins improves and moves off the bump spot. Now the bump spot belongs
to Wally Stroupe, at 6.665.
Left Lane: Carl Baker Runs 6.710/208.91, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.617/209.54, Was #10
Right Lane: Jeff Dobbins Runs 6.677/207.32, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.640/209.98, Was #12
Baker's car darted to the left on the launch, out of the groove, and flirted
with the wall most of the way down the track.
Left Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.643/209.44, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.596/209.39, Was #6
Right Lane: Charlie Peppers Runs 6.644/206.37, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.591/209.83, Was #4
Two good-looking runs, straight and smooth, but neither improved over
yesterday.
Left Lane: Chris Holbrook No Time, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.594/210.18, Was #5
Right Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.654/207.90, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.565/211.61, Was #1
Holbrook's car stopped at the end of the burnout and was pushed from the
track, a small trail of fluid visible on the launch pad. It's water...Gahm took
his time and staged carefully - no improvement. So far, the cars that made good
runs yesterday are falling off a few hundredths of a second from that pace and
Collins is the only driver who has stepped up.
Left Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.654/207.66, Now #15
Best prior run: 0.000/210.18, Was #94
Right Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.665/206.18, Now #7
Best prior run: 0.000/211.61, Was #65
Spiess improves slightly, stays 15th on the ladder.
Left Lane: Larry O'Brien Runs 6.700/206.99, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.706/206.65, Was #18
Right Lane: Anthony Paone Runs 6.835/201.83, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.738/204.73, Was #19
O'Brien improves slightly but remains in the second-alternate slot.
Left Lane: Wally Stroupe Runs 6.703/206.61, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.665/207.32, Was #16
Right Lane: Doug Kirk Runs 13.823/49.77, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.586/210.52, Was #2
Kirk's car broke something about 300 feet out, the car reacting violently.
Stroupe remains on the bubble...
Left Lane: Chuck DeMory Runs 6.715/206.46, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.777/204.77, Was #20
Right Lane: Rick Jones Runs 6.693/206.94, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.643/209.01, Was #14
DeMory makes a step in the right direction, but is still short of the
field.
Left Lane: Billy Huff Runs 6.794/175.84, Now #21
Best prior run: 9.517/88.67, Was #21
Right Lane: Tim Nabors Runs 6.666/207.08, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.612/202.61, Was #9
Huff logged a full pass here, but he's still got a long way to go. Like most
already in the field, Nabors loses five hundredths from yesterday and can't even
beat the bump time today.
Left Lane: Frank Gugliotta Runs 6.849/201.65, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.690/203.98, Was #17
Right Lane: Elijah Morton Runs 10.111/87.45, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.605/210.08, Was #8
Morton's car got way out of shape and scared the daylights out of the
330-foot timing reflector. His car crossed the centerline, so the run doesn't count
anyway. Gugliotta was slow off the line and off the competitive pace all the
way.
Right Lane: John Bartunek Runs 6.679/206.65, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.631/208.09, Was #11
Last car, same deal. One more round, this evening, will set the field.

7:40 PM It's still 79 degrees, but the humidity is just 41 percent and the
track is being partially shaded, barometer 30.08 and steady.
Gugliotta's
car got very squirrely right off the line and he had to lift. Full pass by
Bartunek, no improvement. The bump is Wally Stroupe's 6.665.
Left Lane: Elijah Morton Runs 6.659/208.38, Now #8

Right Lane: Billy Huff Runs 8.767/107.36, Now #21

Huff is still struggling to get the Cougar down the track and comes up short

and could lose lane choice for the first round, tomorrow.
Left Lane: Tim Nabors Runs 6.646/207.61, Now #9

Right Lane: Chuck DeMory Runs 7.152/152.77, Now #19

Left Lane: Rick Jones Runs 6.655/208.23, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.643/209.01, Was #14
Right Lane: Larry O'Brien Runs 6.713/206.09, Now #18

Right Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 6.606/208.71, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.594/210.18, Was #5
Same story, Holbrook with low ET of the round so far, just a hundredth and
change slower than yesterday, all three of his runs within just over a hundredth of
a second of each other.
Left Lane: Doug Kirk Runs 11.700/74.57, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.586/210.52, Was #2
Right Lane: Wally Stroupe Runs 6.715/205.90, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.665/207.32, Was #16
Lots of hard shake for Kirk. Stroupe loses five hundredths from yesterday
and will have to sweat out the rest of the session on the bubble.
Left Lane: Jason Collins Runs 6.622/210.67, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.643/210.18, Was #13
Right Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.654/206.80, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.654/207.66, Was #15
Nice pass by Collins, the first real improvement this round - he was the only
one who made a substantial improvement last round also. Spiess is bracket racing,
two 6.654s today.
Left Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.616/208.23, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.604/209.15, Was #7
Right Lane: Carl Baker Runs 11.958/92.11, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.617/209.54, Was #11
Baker chattered the tires, the front end in the air and the car headed for
the centerline. Nice run by Miller, clean and straight.
Left Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.603/210.52, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.565/211.61, Was #1
Right Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.647/207.27, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.596/209.39, Was #6
Gahm steps up and takes low ET of the session away from Holbrook - and posts
top speed of the session to go with it. Rice lost half a tenth, a little more than
the top runners this round.
Left Lane: Charlie Peppers Runs 6.646/208.96, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.591/209.83, Was #4
Peppers closes out the session by also losing half a tenth from his best run,
but just 0.002 seconds slower than his first run today.
That's it, the field
is set for tomorrow's eliminations.

over Collins in round two.

(L) Rick Jones (Neon R/T) 0.496 9.116 101.39

(L) Doug Kirk (Kirk Trucking Cavalier) 0.503 7.722 126.90

and almost crossing the centerline. Spiess gets the fifth upset win of the round,
but loses lane choice to Dobbins in the next round.
(W) Brian Gahm (NAPA Tools & Equip. Mustang) 0.456 6.612 210.32
