Results for Qualifying 1

GRAND BEND, Ont. - GRAND BEND - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 3rd annual Mopar Performance Parts Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 5.840/240.19, Now #1
Right Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 5.928/234.13, Now #2
11:57 AM Rector picks up where he left off in Virginia, eradicating John Vouros' track elapsed time record on his first pass and coming up just short of Mark Thomas' 240.38 track speed record. Nice pass by Atchison in front of his home-town crowd, but it paled by comparison.
Left Lane: Adam Szeler No Time, Now #4
Right Lane: Wayne Butler Runs 6.312/219.35, Now #3
Szeler left before the tree was activated. Clean run by Butler.
Left Lane: Ronnie Midyette Runs 5.944/220.75, Now #3
Right Lane: Mike Comella Runs 6.521/159.48, Now #5
Nice run by Midyette. Comella was right with him to half track, then Comella's car started falling back and he shut it down.
Left Lane: Paul Noakes Runs 11.020/74.02, Now #7
Right Lane: Lance Van Hauen Runs 7.203/209.79, Now #6
Noakes shook very hard and then the engine went silent. Van Hauen spun the tires hard, pedaled, spun, and then got it hooked up to complete the run.
Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 5.984/236.90, Now #4
Right Lane: Dan Crownhart Runs 12.413/69.48, Now #9
Crownhart chattered the tires hard on the launch and clicked it off. McMillen had light shake, his tire tracks showing a pair of "dotted lines" and he drove through it nicely.
Left Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 5.937/241.02, Now #3
Right Lane: Dale Brand Runs 6.013/236.22, Now #6
Brand was strong early in the run, then fell off the pace a bit, while Cannister left softly and then came on hard on the top end.
Left Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 6.523/153.06, Now #10
Right Lane: Chris Foster Runs 6.059/234.68, Now #7
Thomas was ahead of Rector's pace at 330 feet, then appeared to lose the blower belt around half track, with lots of raw fuel from the pipes. Clean pass for Foster.
Left Lane: Mike Etter Runs 6.546/231.12, Now #12
Right Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.974/229.88, Now #5
Etter got out of the groove, to the left and very close to the wall just past half track. Nice pass by Vouros, but he was not close to taking his track elapsed time record back from Rector.
Left Lane: Russell Mudd Runs 8.559/105.31, Now #15
Right Lane: Jeff Lancaster Runs 6.513/219.19, Now #10
Mudd was slow off the line and slowed before half track. Lancaster was off pace from the start, but stayed with it through the lights.
Left Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 9.597/76.73, Now #16
Last car...Dobbs shook on the launch and then the RPMs went up and he shut it off.

Results for Qualifying 2

GRAND BEND, Ont. - GRAND BEND - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 3rd annual Mopar Performance Parts Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.868/237.09, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.974/229.88, Was #5
Right Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 6.046/229.06, Now #8
Best prior run: 9.597/76.73, Was #16
6:33 PM That's a little more like what Vouros was looking for, closing the gap on Rector. Nice recovery for Dobbs, the car initially spinning the tires, but then hooking up solidly for a 0.983 60-foot time
Left Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 7.772/114.56, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.928/234.13, Was #3
Right Lane: Mike Etter Runs 6.152/226.07, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.546/231.12, Was #14
Etter's car sports a classy metalflake paint job. It also runs pretty well, stepping way up over its initial lap here. Atchison was way ahead of Etter to 330 feet, then slowed.
Left Lane: Jeff Lancaster Runs 6.544/216.03, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.513/219.19, Was #12
Right Lane: Ronnie Midyette Runs 5.995/231.48, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.944/220.75, Was #5
Midyette's car took a crooked path to the finish line and Midyette did a good job of taming it down.Lancaster was slow off the line and fell back rapidly.
Left Lane: Wayne Butler Runs 6.183/224.10, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.312/219.35, Was #11
Right Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 7.584/106.15, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.937/241.02, Was #4
Both cars left hard and Cannister was on a good pace, but slowed before half track. Nice effort by Butler, improving by over a tenth of a second, but remaining in the same spot on the ladder.
Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 13.758/57.11, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.013/236.22, Was #7
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.907/236.22, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.523/153.06, Was #14
Both cars had problems on the top end on their first pass. This time around, brand's problems came immediately, the rear tires chattering hard, the car getting very sideways and heading for the wall before he lifted. Thomas' run looked good, straight and smooth.
Left Lane: Lance Van Hauen Runs 8.161/125.94, Now #16
Best prior run: 7.203/209.79, Was #15
Right Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 6.046/226.18, Now #10
                                  No Prior Run
Van Hauen spun the tires hard, pedaled, spun again, then got them hooked up only to lose power at half track. Full pass by Bogolo, not good enough for a five, but enough to get solidly in the field.
Left Lane: Dan Crownhart Runs 6.296/214.59, Now #15
Best prior run: 12.413/69.48, Was #19
Right Lane: Paul Noakes Runs 6.197/226.30, Now #14
Best prior run: 11.020/74.02, Was #18
Double bump, putting Jeff Lancaster on the bubble at 6.513. Both runs looked okay, just not quick.
Left Lane: Mike Comella Runs 5.861/239.17, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.521/159.48, Was #17
Right Lane: Russell Mudd No Time, Now #19
Best prior run: 8.559/105.31, Was #19
Wow! Comella steps way up on a very nice run. Mudd was way behind and struggling, his chutes out well before the finish line - but that didn't keep him from taking out the finish line timing reflectors. He came so close to the 1,000-foot marker (actually, it's at 990 feet at this track) that he knocked it out of alignment, then center-punched the finish line speed start and elapsed time reflectors.
Left Lane: Chris Foster Runs 6.084/235.72, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.059/234.68, Was #12
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 10.826/65.82, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.984/236.90, Was #8
Foster made a full pass. McMillen launched into shake, dropped a couple cylinders, and then he shut it off.

GRAND BEND, Ont. - GRAND BEND - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, Third annual Mopar Performance Parts Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.964/234.43, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.868/237.09, Was #3

Best prior run: 5.840/240.19, Was #1
1:32 PM The bump as the third session opens is Dan Crownhart's 6.296. This first pair is clearly safely in the top half of the field and both make clean, straight runs in the heat of the day.
Left Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 5.888/235.47, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.928/234.13, Was #5

Best prior run: 5.937/241.02, Was #6
Nice run by Atchison, bringing the Canadian fans to their feet as he moves into the top four. He pulled away from Cannister in the first half of the track and then held his lead on the top end. Cannister fell off the pace around the 990-foot marker, the reason not evident from here.
Left Lane: Jeff Lancaster Runs 8.247/97.33, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.513/219.19, Was #17
Right Lane: Ronnie Midyette Runs 6.046/228.77, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.944/220.75, Was #7
Lancaster's car slowed before half track. Midyette's car left a small trail of fuel on the launch, but it was between the tires and didn't affect his run.
Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 5.970/236.46, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.013/236.22, Was #9
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.965/231.60, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.907/236.22, Was #5
Two heavy-hitters, two good runs with no visible problems.
Left Lane: Lance Van Hauen Runs 6.310/226.75, Now #17
Best prior run: 7.203/209.79, Was #18
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.276/228.02, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.984/236.90, Was #9
McMillen chattered the tires and lost a lot of ground early in the run. VanHauen got a full pass in here, a few ticks too slow to make the field.
Left Lane: Chris Foster Runs 6.081/234.31, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.059/234.68, Was #12
Right Lane: Mike Etter Runs 6.549/221.02, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.152/226.07, Was #13
Etter had problems early, shaking hard, and then again on the top end, going off the end of the track and into the "kitty litter." Good run by Foster, just light shake on the launch.
Left Lane: Dave Miller Runs 6.484/216.08, Now #18
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 6.110/225.79, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.046/229.06, Was #10
Miller just finished his licensing passes yesterday, running in the mid-sixes. That's what he managed here, not a bad start for a new driver. Dobbs went down the groove after a shaky start.
Left Lane: Mike Comella Runs 5.968/233.94, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.861/239.17, Was #2
Right Lane: Russell Mudd No Time, Now #20
Best prior run: 8.559/105.31, Was #20
Mudd's car died at the end of the burnout and the starting line crew helped Mudd's crew push the car back so Comella could run - one of them losing their shoe on the sticky launch pad. Comella made a nice-looking run, a tenth off his great pass yesterday, but in the ballpark today.
Left Lane: Dan Crownhart Runs 6.686/204.68, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.296/214.59, Was #16
Right Lane: Paul Noakes No Time, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.197/226.30, Was #15
Noakes had an air leak in the shifter system and did not even fire the engine. Crownhart's car labored all the way down the track and he stays on the bubble.
Left Lane: Wayne Butler Runs 6.184/224.60, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.183/224.10, Was #14
Last car of the session. Butler almost duplicated his numbers from yesterday, the car trying to take out the 330-foot marker and Butler doing a nice job of driving to rein it in and save the run.

Results for Qualifying 4

GRAND BEND, Ont. - GRAND BEND - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, Third annual Mopar Performance Parts Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Mike Etter Runs 6.155/225.90, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.152/226.07, Was #13
Right Lane: Jeff Lancaster Runs 6.608/212.76, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.513/219.19, Was #19
8:10 PM It's 79 degrees, humidity 41 percent, barometer 30.08 and steady.

Lancaster was slow off the line with a 1.067 60-foot time and never did come up to a competitive pace. Etter almost matched his best run of the event, with a 0.987 60-foot time and a strong front end.
Left Lane: Adam Szeler Runs 17.704/32.76, Now #21
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Lance Van Hauen Runs 7.072/224.10, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.310/226.75, Was #17
Szeler left before the tree was activated on his only other qualifying attempt, Friday. Here his car shook hard and he pedaled trying to salvage the run. Instead, something broke and the car coasted through, leaving a trail of oil from half track through the finish line area. Van Hauen also shook and pedaled. He managed to regain traction to complete the run, but was too slow to help his cause.

For the record, Dan Crownhart is on the bump spot at 6.296, a very vulnerable time.
Left Lane: Russell Mudd Runs 7.191/149.77, Now #20
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Dan Crownhart Runs 6.202/217.23, Now #16
Best prior run: 0.000/226.75, Was #10
Mudd has had a weekend filled with problems. Crownhart has done almost as badly, but managed one pretty good run Friday to earn the bump spot. Mudd's luck didn't change here, the car very slow off the starting line with tire spin and then all over the lane for the first 300 feet. Crownhart made a good run, but not good enough to get off the bump spot. However, he did make it tougher for someone else to knock him off.
Left Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.889/236.22, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.907/236.22, Was #5
Right Lane: Dale Brand Runs 5.909/217.33, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.970/236.46, Was #8
Good drag race, Thomas slightly quicker and Brand with "five hun" in the bank on reaction time to get to the finish line first and move two spots up the ladder.
Left Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 6.094/226.92, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.046/229.06, Was #10
Right Lane: Wayne Butler Runs 6.191/225.67, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.183/224.10, Was #14
Two pretty good runs, but no help for either driver since both failed to improve.
Left Lane: Paul Noakes Runs 6.164/226.35, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.197/226.30, Was #15
Right Lane: Chris Foster Runs 6.058/233.40, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.059/234.68, Was #12
Two more pretty good runs, Noakes moving one spot further from the bump spot and Foster improving a thousandth over his previous best run.
Left Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 5.866/233.64, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.937/241.02, Was #6
Right Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 5.932/233.10, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.888/235.47, Was #4
Two nice runs, Cannister leapfrogging over Atchison to move into the top four, pushing Atchison out of that select group.
Left Lane: Ronnie Midyette Runs 6.019/233.52, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.944/220.75, Was #8
Right Lane: Dave Miller Runs 9.682/82.90, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.484/216.08, Was #18
Miller's inaugural weekend in Funny Car came to an early end when his car slipped out of the groove, near the wall, and he had to lift. Midyette's run looked okay, but it just didn't have the top-end zip he had in earlier runs.
Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 5.946/233.88, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.984/236.90, Was #9
Right Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.899/234.00, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.868/237.09, Was #4
Two good runs to close the session, McMillen improving, but not enough to move into the top half of the field.

Results for Elimination Round 1

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Funny Car at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, Third annual Mopar Performance Parts Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Jimmy Rector (Holbrook Performance Camaro) 0.514 5.875 238.66
 (L) Dave Miller (Firenza) 0.514 8.651 93.15
11:56 AM Miller was in as second alternate, for Dan Crownhart. Miller finished his licensing runs Friday and now found himself facing a driver who is undefeated in 2002. Both cars shook, Rector skating around and driving through it while Miller suddenly found the front end of his car well up in the air. Miller fought it, finally lifting to avoid crossing the centerline.
 (W) Laurie Cannister (Girl Power Camaro) 0.518 5.828 242.19
 (L) Paul Noakes (Harman Truck Parts Mustang) 0.448 6.145 228.02
Noakes got a big holeshot, but it wasn't close to being enough against the low ET of the event (so far). Noakes did his job, improving over his qualifying effort, but he was outclassed today.
 (W) Mike Comella (Avenger) 0.461 6.034 233.28
 (L) Wayne Butler (Firebird) 0.738 6.151 228.36
Comella was vulnerable, off his qualifying pace, but Butler was not there to take advantage of it.
 (W) John Vouros (CompetitionPlus.com Firebird) 0.495 5.875 237.59
 (L) Mike Etter (Nerves of Steel Firebird) 0.587 6.587 185.87
Etter spotted Vouros almost a tenth at the start and threw in the towel around half track.
 (W) Rob Atchison (PrideFC Firebird) 0.499 5.900 234.55
 (L) Chris Foster (Foster Racing Avenger) 0.600 6.221 227.73
Nice run by Atchison, on time and straight down the groove. Foster was late, shook on the launch, and was unable to mount a challenge. Atchison loses lane choice to Vouros next round, however.
 (W) Mark Thomas (Ethanol Performs Avenger) 0.673 5.901 237.59
 (L) Tony Bogolo (McCowan M'Sports Avenger) 0.509 6.067 233.34
Thomas got caught napping and caught Bogolo in the lights for the win. Then Bogolo's chute was very late and Bogolo went off the end of the track, well into the gravel trap. Thomas' incremental margins (negative means he's behind): 60ft(-0.152), 330 ft(-0.102), 660ft(-0.055), 1,000ft(-0.021). MOV: 0.0023 seconds (approximately 9 inches). Thomas advances, but loses lane choice to Cannister.
 (W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding Firebird) 0.453 5.820 236.90
 (L) Larry Dobbs (Sports Truck Tent Corvette) 0.499 6.125 223.21
Brand dominated this matchup, away first by more than four hundredths and then running low ET of the meet (so far) to win by a large margin. Brand will have lane choice against Comella in round two.
 (W) Terry McMillen (Amalie Oil Avenger) 0.576 5.979 233.70
 (L) Ronnie Midyette (K&W Racing Camaro) 0.513 6.339 170.74
Midyette led to the 990-foot marker and then his car slowed, allowing McMillen to go by for the win. McMillen faces Rector in the second round, Rector with lane choice.

 (L) Mark Thomas (Ethanol Performs Avenger) 0.546 5.992 236.34
The lady is tough today, with a big starting line advantage and a great run, right down the groove - but it wasn't great enough, she lost lane choice to brand by 0.022 seconds.
 (W) Jimmy Rector (Holbrook Performance Camaro) 0.481 5.855 240.32
 (L) Terry McMillen (Amalie Oil Avenger) 0.500 6.057 213.67
Rector extends his round win streak to 18 in a row with a solid reaction time and a solid run, right down the groove. McMillen was second off the line and steadily lost ground.
 (W) Rob Atchison (PrideFC Firebird) 0.476 5.979 232.37
 (L) John Vouros (CompetitionPlus.com Firebird) 0.454 6.686 165.99

3:11 PM For the fourth race in a row it's Dale Brand in the finals, just a little quicker than Cannister at the start and just a little quicker all the way down the track. Cannister was closing the gap on the top end, but lost by about half a car length. Brand's margins: 60ft(0.037), 330 ft(0.068), 660ft(0.064), 1,000ft(0.051).
