Millican showed how it should be done with a strong run.
Right Lane: Josh Starcher Runs 5.074/287.60, Now #5
This is 17-year-old Starcher's first run in IHRA Top Fuel competition. The last run he made on a drag strip before this was in a Briggs & Stratton-powered Jr. Dragster. Starcher showed he can handle the more powerful car with a great first run.
Left Lane: Vicky Fanning No Time, Now #11
Fanning left the line before the tree cycled so she gets no time this session.

Results for Qualifying 2

DINWIDDIE, Va. - RICHMOND - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Fuel at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 2nd annual AC Delco Nationals presented by Chevrolet listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Right Lane: Vicky Fanning Runs 5.643/255.97, Now #9
                                  No Prior Run
Last night, Fanning left before the tree was activated and did not get a time. She'll have two chances today -- weather permitting -- to make the field. This time, she waited for the tree before she left the line but did not run well enough to make the field. She'll have one more chance tonight.
Left Lane: Jack Ostrander Runs 10.472/70.32, Now #11
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Roger Dean Runs 5.220/282.42, Now #6
Best prior run: 7.121/122.96, Was #10
Ostrander did not make any qualifying runs yesterday. Dean made a great pass and got himself into the field. Ostrander smoked the engine coming off the line and will have one more chance to make the field tonight.
Left Lane: Grant Flowers Runs 9.088/71.72, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.625/200.14, Was #9
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 5.380/220.80, Now #9
Best prior run: 10.866/71.18, Was #12
Flowers shook the tires and tried to stay in it but couldn't. He shut down and let out the chute at 1,000 feet. Head came off the line strong, shook the tires and backed off. When he tried to get back on the throttle, he smoked the engine and coasted the rest of the way.
Left Lane: John Sipple Runs 5.684/254.57, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.374/253.18, Was #8
Right Lane: Donald Reed Runs 5.105/232.87, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.359/239.40, Was #7
Reed and Sipple both needed good runs to move up in the qualifying order. Reed got the run he needed and moved from 7th to 6th. Sipple did not improve his position and remains on the bubble.
Left Lane: Josh Starcher Runs 4.966/295.08, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.074/287.60, Was #5
Right Lane: Paul Romine Runs 4.900/289.94, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.974/246.35, Was #4
Starcher made only the second run of his Top Fuel career had an excellent run. The 17-year old was strong and straight for the entire quarter-mile. In the right lane, Paul Romine was even better and moved himself up another notch in the qualifying order.
Left Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 4.900/299.53, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.789/313.44, Was #1
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.822/304.19, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.818/299.66, Was #2
Litton lifted the front wheels a bit at the start and could not improve on his time from last night. Millican came off the line strong and stayed that way. But he was not able to beat Litton's time from last night so Litton stays in the number one spot.

Results for Qualifying 3

DINWIDDIE, Va. - RICHMOND - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Fuel at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 2nd annual ACDelco Nationals presented by Chevrolet listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 13.223/69.49, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.380/220.80, Was #9
Right Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 4.747/308.43, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.789/313.44, Was #1
The final qualifying round starts with John Sipple sitting on the bubble with a bump time of 5.374 seconds. Head went up in smoke at the start and won't make the field. Litton lowered his previous best ET of the weekend by 42-thousandths of a second.

Litton's incrementals: 60ft-0.877 sec. 330ft-2.243, 660ft-3.213/259.01mph, 1,000ft-4.031
Left Lane: Vicky Fanning Runs 5.807/250.55, Now #12
Best prior run: 5.643/255.97, Was #11
Right Lane: Jack Ostrander Runs 5.084/295.85, Now #6
Best prior run: 10.472/70.32, Was #12
Fanning was low on power and did not make the field. Ostrander came off the line hard and made the field, bumping John Sipple. Roger Dean is on the bubble now with a bump time of 5.22 seconds.
Left Lane: Roger Dean Runs 5.141/284.75, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.220/282.42, Was #8
Right Lane: John Sipple Runs 5.550/258.52, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.374/253.18, Was #9
Sipple was bumped from the field and now gets his chance to make it back. He needs to go better than Dean's 5.22 second qualifying time. That assumes that Dean doesn't better his qualifying time in the left lane. Dean ran better and raised the bump time to 5.141. Sipple had engine problems and flamed the engine at the 880-foot mark.
Left Lane: Donald Reed No Time, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.105/232.87, Was #7
Right Lane: Grant Flowers Runs 5.300/275.56, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.625/200.14, Was #11
Reed was safely in the field so he decided not to run. Flowers will take his last chance to make the field of eight. He'll have to beat the 5.141 second ET that Dean recorded in the previous pair. Flowers made a good pass but it wasn't enough to get the job done. The field is set now with only the pairings in question.
Left Lane: Paul Romine Runs 5.739/160.81, Now #4
Best prior run: 4.900/289.94, Was #3
Right Lane: Josh Starcher Runs 4.825/300.60, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.966/295.08, Was #5
In his first Top Fuel drag race ever, 17-year old Josh Starcher made his first 300 MPH run and took the number three spot from Paul Romine. In the left lane, Romine started to drop off the pace by mid track and shut it down early. Starcher had made quite a move in one year, going from junior dragster to 300 MPH in Top Fuel.
Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 15.651/64.07, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.818/299.66, Was #2
Millican wants to take the number one spot, so he's making this run even though he is currently in the second qualifying position and can't move down. He came off the line hard, spun the tires, and shut down right away so he'll have to settle for number two.

Results for Elimination Round 1

DINWIDDIE, Va. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Top Fuel at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 2nd annual ACDelco Nationals presented by Chevrolet:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Paul Romine (CARQUEST Auto Parts Dragster) 0.432 4.959 288.89
 (L) Louie Allison (Vista Foods Dragster) 0.449 5.172 274.78
2:54 PM Right now there's a big, puffy cloud shading the track. It's 95 degrees, but only 39 percent relative humidity (it feels worse). Romine smoked the tires in the time trial around noon today, Allison didn't make a run. Looks like Romine's team learned from the time trial because his car was "soft and safe," smoothly down the groove and steadily pulling away from Allison.
 (W) Josh Starcher (WIX Filters Dragster) 0.538 5.192 246.62
 (L) Jack Ostrander (Dragster) 0.523 5.244 247.75
Veteran versus rookie, and the rookie gets the win light. This one was close all the way, Starcher opening a few hundredths of a second advantage early and then holding it all the way to the line. Ostrander was closing on the top end, but it looked like his engine gave up around the 1,000-foot marker. MOV: 0.0375 seconds (approximately 14 feet).
 (W) Bruce Litton (Lucas Oil Dragster) 0.530 4.946 283.31
 (L) Roger Dean (Rupert Oil Dragster) 0.533 7.826 108.30
Dean had dead cylinders on both sides of the engine and shook the tires. He pedaled it, to no avail. Meanwhile, Litton pedaled it a couple of times and made it work, getting the win light and lane choice against Romine in the semifinals.
 (W) Clay Millican (Werner Dragster) 0.508 5.022 274.61
 (L) Donald Reed (Dragster) 0.543 15.194 69.17
Since his trouble-plagued outing here, Reed has shown 4.80s performance and Millican's team could take nothing for granted here. Millican made a test run earlier today, with a puff of smoke at 400 feet, Reed skipped the time trials. Reed went up in smoke at the hit, while Millican made a soft launch (a 0.915 60-foot well off his usual short times) and sailed right down the middle of the groove, earning lane choice against Starcher in the semifinals.

Results for Elimination Round 2

DINWIDDIE, Va. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Top Fuel at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 2nd annual ACDelco Nationals presented by Chevrolet:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Clay Millican (Werner Dragster) 0.509 4.993 298.34
 (L) Josh Starcher (WIX Filters Dragster) 0.526 5.466 202.09
5:42 PM This one went according to form, Millican once again with a softer than usual setup (a 0.911 60-foot time) but a clean pass, good enough to get the job done.
 (W) Bruce Litton (Lucas Oil Dragster) 0.433 5.064 290.26
 (L) Paul Romine (CARQUEST Auto Parts Dragster) 0.476 5.113 273.66
Good drag race, Litton with a psychic light and just a bit more than Romine the rest of the way down the track to win by a couple car lengths. Romine sacrificed a bullet chasing Litton, his engine eating itself on the top end and the shutdown area, leaving a trail of oil behind it. It will be Millican and Litton in the finals, Millican with lane choice.

Final Round

DINWIDDIE, Va. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 3 eliminations in Top Fuel at the Hooters IHRA Drag Racing Series, 2nd annual ACDelco Nationals presented by Chevrolet:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Clay Millican (Werner Dragster) 0.458 4.798 316.15
 (L) Bruce Litton (Lucas Oil Dragster) 0.506 12.284 75.54
Like Jimmy Rector, Millican is perfect for 2002 coming into today's eliminations, but Litton has been close in performance today. Litton overpowered the launch pad immediately, pedaling twice to no avail. Meanwhile, Millicanan's crew chief Mike Kloeber took advantage of the improved conditions under the lights to turn the wick way up from this afternoon's hot, slick track setup.
