Both cars launched well but coasted the rest of the way.
Left Lane: Doug Kirk Runs 6.671/209.36, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.696/209.33, Was #3
Right Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.640/208.97, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.738/208.10, Was #9

Penland was all over the first 300 feet of the race track and was unable to recover. Jones made a strong run.
Left Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 13.862/69.29, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.756/207.27, Was #13

Best prior run: 7.182/202.27, Was #23
Spiess veered hard to the right as he came off the line and almost crossed the center line. DeMory ran just well enough to grab the 16th spot and put himself in the field, but on the bubble.
Left Lane: Chris Holbrook No Time, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.727/206.95, Was #9

Holbrook didn't answer the call so Bartunek ran alone.
Left Lane: Wayne Bishop Runs 6.883/200.41, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.871/201.34, Was #20

Miller came into this round in the first spot but had already dropped to fifth when it came his turn to run. He drew the quicker right lane for second round qualifying but the better lane and cooler temperatures weren't enough to let him regain the top spot.
Left Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.652/208.88, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.695/208.30, Was #5
Right Lane: Carl Baker Runs 6.604/210.18, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.754/207.59, Was #12
The cool temperatures were just what Baker needed as he had an almost perfect run. Rice made a strong run at the same time and both moved up the ladder.
Left Lane: Jeff Dobbins Runs 6.646/209.95, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.715/209.88, Was #7

Best prior run: 6.768/206.51, Was #14
Dobbins made as strong run to move himself up the ladder. Nothing appeared wrong with O'Brien's run but the quickness just wasn't there.
Left Lane: Steve Williford Runs 6.702/207.27, Now #8
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Pete Berner Runs 15.067/50.74, Now #22
Best prior run: 6.933/179.14, Was #21
Berner shook the tires and backed off. Williford made a so-so run that got him into the field.
Left Lane: Harold Robinson Runs 6.912/186.95, Now #22
Best prior run: 7.138/185.84, Was #24

Best prior run: 6.771/205.63, Was #16
Stroupe ran well enough to move himself up in the field. Robinson's run just wasn't enough to get into the show.
Left Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 9.391/126.18, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.720/208.71, Was #10
Right Lane: Jerry Yeoman Runs 6.641/208.78, Now #3
                                  No Prior Run
Montecalvo went hard to the right at 60 feet and had to shut it down. Yeoman had a good run and put himself solidly in the top half of the field.
Left Lane: Charlie Peppers No Time, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.826/205.85, Was #19
Right Lane: Elijah Morton Runs 7.489/138.48, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.740/206.23, Was #14
Peppers did not make the call. Morton made a solo run that did nothing to improve his qualifying position.
Right Lane: Jason Collins Runs 6.688/209.95, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.978/206.86, Was #25
Collins ran solo and put himself into the field.

Best prior run: 6.688/209.95, Was #10
As the third round started, cloud cover moved in and temperatures began to drop.
Left Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 6.678/208.94, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.720/208.71, Was #13

Best prior run: 6.740/206.23, Was #16
Morton came into this run sitting on the bubble so he needed to do more. He got what he needed and put himself solidly into the field. Montecalvo made a good run in the left lane and helped himself too.
Left Lane: Harold Robinson Runs 16.384/46.48, Now #24
Best prior run: 6.912/186.95, Was #24
Right Lane: Wally Stroupe Runs 6.728/206.35, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.705/206.51, Was #14
Robinson made a hard right off the line and had to back off. Stroupe's run was okay, but did nothing to improve his position.
Left Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 11.512/103.03, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.756/207.27, Was #17
Right Lane: Chuck DeMory Runs 6.795/204.48, Now #19

Spiess came into the third round of qualifying in an unusual position: on the outside looking in. Once again, he came off the line and had to back off.
Left Lane: Rick Jones Runs 6.693/207.91, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.670/207.27, Was #9
Right Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.673/207.50, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.658/206.70, Was #6
Both drivers made good runs but not enough to improve their positions. As both were already in the field, it doesn't really matter.
Left Lane: Wayne Bishop Runs 6.903/199.91, Now #23
Best prior run: 6.871/201.34, Was #23
Right Lane: Richard Penland Runs 6.822/204.01, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.870/202.82, Was #22
Bishop and Penland were both outside looking in before this run and both stayed outside after each made an unspectacular run.
Left Lane: John Bartunek Runs 6.735/204.98, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.660/206.76, Was #7
Right Lane: Billy Huff Runs 14.359/72.17, Now #27
Best prior run: 8.801/100.86, Was #27
Huff had handling problems off the line and had to back off.
Left Lane: Jeff Dobbins Runs 6.703/209.14, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.646/209.95, Was #4
Right Lane: Jerry Yeoman Runs 6.734/207.85, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.641/208.78, Was #3
Solid runs by both keep them at the top of the field.
Left Lane: Hank Hill Runs 6.690/209.39, Now #13
Best prior run: 14.584/55.68, Was #28
Right Lane: Carl Baker No Time, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.604/210.18, Was #1
Before this run, Baker's new 2002 Cougar had only made it to the finish line four times since it was completed a few weeks ago. This time, he shook the tires hard off the line and had to back off. Hill made a good run that moved him from the 28th spot into the field.
Left Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 6.699/207.98, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.727/206.95, Was #17
Right Lane: Larry O'Brien Runs 6.751/206.86, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.768/206.51, Was #19
Holbrook started to lose it but held on and put himself into the field. O'Brien ran better than yesterday, but just didn't have enough power to move into the field.
Left Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.733/201.85, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.652/208.88, Was #5
Right Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.702/208.78, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.640/208.97, Was #2
Good runs by both Rice and Gahm, but neither improved their positions.
Left Lane: Steve Williford Runs 6.691/207.24, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.702/207.27, Was #15
Right Lane: Pete Berner Runs 8.060/114.07, Now #26
Best prior run: 6.933/179.14, Was #26
Berner's run looked okay but there was no power or speed. Williford ran strong enough to move himself up one notch in the field and that will help improve his chances of not being bumped tonight.
Left Lane: Tim Nabors Runs 6.698/207.78, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.722/207.72, Was #17
Right Lane: Frank Gugliotta Runs 6.802/205.41, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.844/203.89, Was #23
Nabors' pass was enough to put him into the field. Gugliotta was not good enough and stays outside.
Left Lane: Doug Kirk Runs 6.671/209.33, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.671/209.36, Was #10
Kirk wiggled coming off the line but set the lowest ET of the round.

Left Lane: Frank Gugliotta Runs 7.227/204.94, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.802/205.41, Was #21

At the start of the qualifying session, the temperature was 76 degrees, with 59 percent humidity. Kirk comes into the round in the #10 spot. He'd love to move up at least two positions so he can have lance choice tomorrow. He made a good run but was not able to improve his position. Gugliotta was down to his last chance to make the field and failed to do so with a run that showed low power coming off the line.
Left Lane: Pete Berner Runs 6.685/209.39, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.933/179.14, Was #26
Right Lane: Tim Nabors Runs 6.633/207.91, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.698/207.78, Was #15
Berner needed to go quicker than a 6.699 to make the show. He made it with a strong run through the entire quarter mile. In the right lane, Nabors also made a good run and moves up into the top of the order.
Left Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.655/209.07, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.640/208.97, Was #3

Two good runs --less than one-thousandth of a second apart. Gahm stayed in the same spot but Williford moved up several steps on the ladder.
Left Lane: Billy Huff Runs 6.911/168.75, Now #26
Best prior run: 8.801/100.86, Was #28
Right Lane: Hank Hill Runs 6.650/209.14, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.690/209.39, Was #16
Huff has gone hard to the right as he came off the line in his previous three qualifying attempts. He managed to keep it straight this time but was not quick enough to make the show. Meanwhile, Hill had a good run and moved up in the order.
Left Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.682/206.67, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.658/206.70, Was #9
Right Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.664/207.66, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.756/207.27, Was #20
Spiess had been unable to make the field in the first three rounds, but this time he had what it took. He came off the line hard and made a great run to get into the field. Miller also came off the line hard and kept it straight and strong to stay in the middle of the pack.
Left Lane: Jerry Yeoman Runs 6.678/208.42, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.641/208.78, Was #4
Right Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 6.626/209.10, Now #2

Yeoman got loose off the start but held it together to complete a strong run. Montecalvo had been hanging at the end of the field all weekend but he woke up tonight with a 6.626 second ET that puts him in the number two position for now.
Left Lane: Richard Penland Runs 6.734/205.85, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.822/204.01, Was #23
Right Lane: Jeff Dobbins Runs 6.648/209.52, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.646/209.95, Was #6
Dobbins made two 6.64 second runs in the right lane. His last run of the even was a good one: hard off the line and straight for the quarter mile. Penland didn't have enough to make the field, so he'll go home tonight.
Left Lane: Carl Baker Runs 6.613/211.33, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.604/210.18, Was #1
Right Lane: Wayne Bishop Runs 6.876/200.05, Now #25
Best prior run: 6.871/201.34, Was #25
Baker made the quickest run of the weekend last night and backed it up with the second quickest run this weekend. He'll stay in the number one spot unless someone can beat him tonight. Bishop tried one last time, but couldn't make the show.
Left Lane: Chuck DeMory Runs 7.487/163.12, Now #22
Best prior run: 6.784/204.05, Was #22
Right Lane: Charlie Peppers Runs 6.860/204.94, Now #24
Best prior run: 6.826/205.85, Was #24
DeMory drifted to the wall as he launched, so he had to back off. Peppers kept it straight but didn't have what he needed to crack the top 16.
Left Lane: Wally Stroupe Runs 6.689/207.62, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.705/206.51, Was #19
Right Lane: Harold Robinson Runs 6.962/196.44, Now #27
Best prior run: 6.912/186.95, Was #27
It was the last chance for both to make the field, but neither was able to do it. Stroupe missed by four thousandths of a second and now will be going home.
Left Lane: Jason Collins Runs 6.673/210.21, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.688/209.95, Was #17
Right Lane: John Bartunek Runs 6.675/206.42, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.660/206.76, Was #11
As he pulled to the staging lanes, Collins sat in the #17 spot. His run was unspectacular but he got what he needed to bump Berner and claim the number 16 spot. Bartunek made another good run and stays in the same spot in the order.
Left Lane: Elijah Morton Runs 6.668/207.94, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.664/208.20, Was #12
Right Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 6.625/208.84, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.699/207.98, Was #19
Collins didn't stay in the field very long as Holbrook came off the line hard and stayed that way to take the #2 spot in the order for now. Morton was a bit loose and stayed where he was in the order.
Left Lane: Larry O'Brien Runs 6.674/207.78, Now #18

O'Brien tried with a good effort but it wasn't enough and he missed the field by three thousandths of a second. Rice made a good run but stayed where he was in the order.
Right Lane: Rick Jones Runs 8.053/123.98, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.670/207.27, Was #15
