Stock at the 31st annual Holley Spring Nationals presented by Advance Auto Parts
listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following
run:
Left Lane: Robert Killian Runs 8.600/108.36, Now #1
Right Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 9.666/107.85, Now #2
1:05 PM Despite gloomy weather predictions, it's really rather pleasant
today, scattered clouds and lots of blue sky. Holbrook's car got out of shape
immediately, Killian's about 200 feet out.
Left Lane: Doug Kirk Runs 11.490/67.13, Now #4
Right Lane: Ed Machacek Runs 10.851/75.77, Now #3
Same story here, both cars a real hand full for the drivers on their first
pass.
Left Lane: Brian Gahm No Time, Now #6
Right Lane: David Jenkins Runs 13.884/83.33, Now #5
Gahm took too long to stage and got a red light - then sat there. Jenkins
launched into severe shake.
Left Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.755/206.32, Now #1
Right Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 9.104/99.33, Now #3
Miller's new Grand Am shook a bit on the launch - he pedaled it and continued
for a good result. Wilson's car shook and he gave it up.
Left Lane: Carl Baker Runs 8.741/104.87, Now #4
Right Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.754/203.86, Now #1
Baker's new Ford was a handful on the launch, but Spiess' new car went right
down the groove.
Left Lane: Tom Lee Runs 6.712/206.92, Now #1
Right Lane: John Konigshofer Runs 10.398/97.98, Now #8
Konigshofer shook hard. Lee drove a very crooked path, leaving snaking twin
black trails down the left lane.
Left Lane: Hank Hill Runs 6.876/200.77, Now #5
Right Lane: Angelo Alesci Runs 6.744/205.98, Now #2
Hill showed us both sides of his car and he never lifted. Clean, fairly
straight pass for Alesci's new Cavalier.
Left Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.711/205.76, Now #1
Right Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 9.781/113.24, Now #11
Rice's "old" Firebird was a little crooked but made a very good run.
Montecalvo's new Cavalier shook very hard and he shut it down.
Left Lane: Jon Yoak Runs 6.945/206.04, Now #7
Right Lane: Jerry Yeoman Runs 13.077/61.26, Now #16
Looks like the right lane is throwing the drivers a few curves. Yoak made a
clean run in the left lane, Yeoman shook and headed for the wall in the right.
Left Lane: Tony Fox Runs 6.795/204.08, Now #7
Right Lane: Runs 6.724/205.16, Now #3
No data on file for the car in the right lane, but whoever it was made a nice
opening run.
Left Lane: Joel Bayless Runs 8.371/111.60, Now #11
Right Lane: Jason Collins Runs 6.718/207.43, Now #3
Nice pass for Collins...

the first session.

Best prior run: 6.754/206.92, Was #6

No Prior Run
6:41 PM A few minutes ahead of schedule the first pair of mountain-motor Pro

Left Lane: Randy Moore Runs 6.677/206.89, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.724/205.16, Was #4

Right Lane: Jon Yoak Runs 8.361/118.29, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.945/206.04, Was #12

Best prior run: 6.754/203.86, Was #8
Right Lane: Carl Baker Runs 6.741/203.09, Now #9
Best prior run: 8.741/104.87, Was #15

enough.

Best prior run: 9.104/99.33, Was #16
Right Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 7.648/131.19, Now #15

Right Lane: Carl Baker Runs 7.233/146.29, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.741/203.09, Was #15
Baker had a major moment just past half track, the car suddenly getting very

Right Lane: Tony Fox Runs 6.803/204.20, Now #13

Best prior run: 6.677/207.40, Was #6
Right Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.698/207.66, Now #10

Best prior run: 6.992/197.59, Was #24
Right Lane: Ron Miller Runs 9.357/97.87, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.685/206.76, Was #9
Wilson uses a 1.01 60-foot time to get the Cougar launched on a very crooked
run, obviously never lifting. That bumps Baker, putting Chris Holbrook on the bump
at 6.741.
Left Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 18.820/43.26, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.714/205.16, Was #14
Right Lane: Jon Yoak Runs 14.006/59.55, Now #24

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Sunoco
Pro Stock at the 31st annual Holley Spring Nationals presented by Advance Auto
Parts listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in
order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to
run:
Left Lane: Steve Williford No Time, Now #26
Best prior run: 12.007/69.44, Was #26
Right Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 6.720/204.66, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.733/204.39, Was #18
6:43 PM We open the final qualifying session with Tony Fox on the bump spot
at 6.728. Williford took too long to stage and the autostart system timed him out,
so he gets no time. Holbrook was caught off guard by the long delay and sat there
for 1.5 seconds before leaving, then barely got into the field and will have to
sweat it out.
Left Lane: Doug Kirk Runs 6.736/204.88, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.711/205.32, Was #14
Right Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 13.709/81.69, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.661/208.01, Was #5
Once again Montecalvo's car is untameable on the launch, going hard right
immediately. Kirk's launch was okay, but his car was all over the lane.
Left Lane: Joel Bayless Runs 7.777/109.61, Now #25
Best prior run: 8.371/111.60, Was #25
Right Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 19.940/39.27, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.714/205.16, Was #15
Spiess' car turned hard left on the launch and he gave it up, coasting
through. Bayless' run looked okay for the first half, but he slowed on the top end
and had the chute out well before the line.
Left Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.704/207.72, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.698/207.66, Was #12
Right Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.605/207.82, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.661/206.76, Was #6
So far it's Track 4, Racers 2, but this pair evens it up at 4-4, Wilson with
a superb pass, moving to the top of the ladder. Gahm's run was pretty good too,
but he was well back at the finish line.
Left Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.622/207.37, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.685/206.76, Was #10
Right Lane: David Jenkins Runs 7.024/159.10, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.747/206.39, Was #19
Jenkins almost went on a wild ride on the top end, his car steadily veering
left until he yanked it back at half track. The car overcorrected and almost
collected the wall. Meanwhile Miller made a very nice run, clean and
straight.
Left Lane: Carl Baker Runs 6.727/206.04, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.741/203.09, Was #18
Right Lane: Elijah Morton Runs 11.572/75.35, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.709/207.46, Was #13
Baker comes up just short and probably will be a spectator Sunday unless
somebody breaks.
Left Lane: Hank Hill Runs 6.798/203.95, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.777/203.65, Was #21
Right Lane: Johnny McLain Runs 6.937/201.67, Now #23
Best prior run: 6.847/202.21, Was #23
Left Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.665/205.41, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.635/207.24, Was #4

Right Lane: Angelo Alesci Runs 6.637/207.08, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.660/207.46, Was #6
Fox gets back in and Alesci moves up. That bumps Holbrook. Now the bump is
Steve Spiess' 6.714.
Left Lane: Robert Killian Runs 6.881/177.16, Now #22
Best prior run: 6.836/203.16, Was #22

Results for Elimination Round 1
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in
Sunoco Pro Stock at the 31st annual Holley Spring Nationals presented by Advance
Auto Parts:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) John Montecalvo ('01 Chevy Cavalier) 9.749 143.54
(L) Randy Moore ('98 Ford Probe) 0.000(R) (Broke)
12:00 noon - Montecalvo had lane choice, but only managed to get his new
Cavalier down the track once during qualifying, while Moore made three full passes.
Moore took too long to stage and drew a red light, but Montecalvo didn't react to
the green light until the starter signaled him to go - and then the car once again
turned hard right on the launch.
(W) Jason Collins ('98 Ford Probe) 0.463 6.692 206.61
(L) Jerry Yeoman ('00 Pontiac Firebird) 0.476 6.704 206.80
Good drag race, Collins with a small holeshot and a slightly quicker ET, ,
THE Margin of victory = 0.025 seconds (approximately 8 feet).
(W) John Konigshofer ('97 Ford Probe) 0.528 6.632 208.62
(L) Bob Holzer ('00 Pont Firebird) 0.529 7.890 127.78
Holzer fell off the pace at half track.
(W) Brian Gahm ('01 Ford Mustang) 0.420 6.701 207.59
(L) Angelo Alesci ('01 Chevy Cavalier) 0.527 6.650 207.53
Gahm trees Konigshofer by a tenth of a second and then holds him off for the
win by a Margin of victory = 0.056 seconds (approximately 17 feet). Gahm appeared
to hesitate after the launch, possibly thinking he'd red lighted,
( ) Dwayne Rice ('99 Pont Firebird)
( ) Elijah Morton ('99 Ford Probe)
These two made their burnouts and then were signaled to shut off, a light
sprinkle falling.
(W) Ron Miller ('01 Pontiac Grand Am) 0.573 6.650 206.83
(L) Tony Fox ('00 Ford Mustang) 0.549 6.833 203.95
12:19 PM The track is dry. The rain was only a light mist, the jet drier
made a couple laps and we were ready to go again. Fox got a small holeshot, but
could not run the number and Miller won easily. Miller faces Konigshofer next
round, Konigshofer with lane choice.
(W) Gene Wilson (Don Smith '00 Mercury Cougar) 0.429 6.629 207.85
(L) Doug Kirk ('98 Chevy Monte Carlo) 0.460 6.727 205.69
Wilson saws the tree down and then runs away from Kirk, winning by a Margin
of victory = 0.129 seconds (approximately 39 feet). He will have lane choice
against Collins in round two.
(W) Tom Lee ('00 Ford Mustang) 0.486 6.600 208.84
(L) Steve Spiess ('01 Pontiac Grand Am) 0.539 6.699 204.51
I missed Lee's pole position run in yesterday's notes - my apologies for
that - but I didn't miss this one, quick from the start, a 1.01 60-foot time and
straight as a string. He will have lane choice against Montecalvo in round
two.
(W) Dwayne Rice ('99 Pont Firebird) 0.487 6.677 205.75
(L) Elijah Morton ('99 Ford Probe) 0.515 10.005 90.57
These two were permitted to cool down since they had already made a burnout
when the rain came. Morton's car turned into a wild beast on the launch and Riced
had an easy time of it, also earning lane choice against Gahm in round two.

Results for Elimination Round 2
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Sunoco
Pro Stock at the 31st annual Holley Spring Nationals presented by Advance Auto
Parts:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Dwayne Rice ('99 Pont Firebird) 0.461 6.689 206.16
(L) Brian Gahm ('01 Ford Mustang) 0.502 6.690 206.89
5:08 PM We've got an extra hour of daylight today, but it will be way dark
before we finish this event. Technically, this was not a holeshot win for Rice, his
ET quicker by 0.001 seconds. Margin of victory = 0.042 seconds (approximately 13
feet).
(W) Ron Miller ('01 Pontiac Grand Am) 0.458 6.613 207.53
(L) John Konigshofer ('97 Ford Probe) 0.500 6.648 208.46
This round Miller cuts the tree down and leads all the way, winning by a
Margin of victory = 0.077 seconds (approximately 24 feet).
(W) Gene Wilson (Don Smith '00 Mercury Cougar) 0.401 6.637 207.50
(L) Jason Collins ('98 Ford Probe) 0.461 6.664 207.75
Wilson had a psychic light and then drove a crooked path to the win, by a
Margin of victory = 0.087 seconds (approximately 27 feet). He loses lane choice to
Miller in the semifinals, however.
(W) Tom Lee ('00 Ford Mustang) 0.471 6.682 199.67
(L) John Montecalvo ('01 Chevy Cavalier) 0.488 11.493 105.35
Montecalvo's car chattered the tires and he threw in the towel. Lee was out
of the groove early, but recovered for a good pass - quick enough to earn lane
choice against Rice in the semifinals.

Results for Elimination Round 3
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3 eliminations in Sunoco

(W) Tom Lee ('00 Ford Mustang) 0.495 6.581 208.91
(L) Dwayne Rice ('99 Pont Firebird) 0.462 7.873 101.85
7:00 PM and it's still daylight. Lee made a great pass, already backed up as
an ET record, for the win while Rice was battling to stay out of the wall near the
1,000-foot marker, putting the chutes out to straighten the car.
(W) Gene Wilson (Don Smith '00 Mercury Cougar) 0.438 6.620 207.08
(L) Ron Miller ('01 Pontiac Grand Am) 0.475 6.601 208.42
Another great light from Wilson, his third holeshot in a row and he needed
this one to hold off Miller's quicker ET, the Margin of victory = 0.018 seconds
(approximately 6 feet). Lee will have lane choice against Wilson in the final
round.

(W) Gene Wilson (Don Smith '00 Mercury Cougar) 0.423 6.600 208.59
(L) Tom Lee ('00 Ford Mustang) 0.506 6.552 210.11
8:28 PM and under the lights, but at least this event is finishing the same
day it started. The Pro Stock ladder came down as designed, #1 versus #2 in the
finals. Wilson has been sawing the tree down all day and once again he pulls it
off, nailing Lee to the tree and getting the win light despite Lee's IHRA record
ET, the second time today Lee has reset the elapsed time mark and the quickest Pro
Stock elapsed time ever. Lee gets the record, but he'd surely rather have the
event win. Congratulations to Wilson for an outstanding exhibition of drag racing
driving skills, his reaction times all between 0.401 and 0.438.
