Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley-Davidson at the 31st annual Holley Spring Nationals presented by Advance
Auto Parts listing lane, rider name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order

Left Lane: Steve Moore Runs 7.074/165.19, Now #1
Right Lane: Bill Furr Runs 9.303/101.35, Now #2
Bill Furr had problems right off the starting line and finally gave up. Moore
was laboring on the top end.
Left Lane: Tony Mattioli Runs 6.623/197.36, Now #1
Right Lane: Ray Price Runs 6.987/205.79, Now #2
Ray Price with the sluggish start and the hard top end charge and our first
200 mph pass.
Mattioli with a great looking pass here.
Left Lane: Bob Malloy Runs 6.639/186.10, Now #3
Right Lane: Doug Vancil Runs 6.545/206.26, Now #1
Vancil with the header flames visible all the way dow the quarter mile for the
number one spot.
This was a good looking side-by-side drag race.
Left Lane: Mike Romine Runs 6.665/203.52, Now #4
Right Lane: Johnny Mancuso Runs 6.695/192.66, Now #5
Another good side-by-side race for number four and five.
Left Lane: Jack Romine Runs 6.826/197.28, Now #6
Right Lane: Mark Cox Runs 8.453/132.14, Now #9
Cox had problems and clicked it off.
Left Lane: Steve Stordeur No Time, Now #12
Right Lane: Mark Conner Runs 6.714/206.32, Now #6
Stordeur got real close to the centerline, he attempted to wrestle back into
the groove. but no luck as he collected the finish line cone.
Left Lane: Jay Turner Runs 6.710/198.23, Now #6
Turner was able to keep right in the middle of the lane, and the World
Champion is in the show at the number six spot.

Both riders make moves in the right direction, but not enough to change
positions.

Romine with a wisp of tire smoke right off the starting line. Furr got out of
the groove but stayed with it to get in the show and bump out Romine.

Malloy a little tire smoke around half track and no improvement. Cox made a
big move in the right direction, but not enough to get into the show.

Romine with a lot of tire smoke and then skating around until about half
track, that is when he got it to stick. No improvement for Conner.

Here we go with the number one and two qualifiers. No help for either of
these riders. Vancil had a couple big wiggle.

Best prior run: 7.074/165.19, Was #11
Not good for the local guy he will have one more chance to get in the
show.
Right Lane: Steve Stordeur Runs 6.602/205.66, Now #2
No Prior Run
Stordeur right down the groove and into the number two spot after hitting the
cone last night.
That wraps up qualifying for now with one more shot. If
nothing changes Stordeur will face Mancuso.

Cox with his last shot at this field. Jay Turner holds the bump with a 6.70
second pass. Cox can not do it. Mattioli with another good pass, but will stay in
the third spot for now.

Conner's engine went silent around 900 feet. Romine got out of the groove,
but stayed with it for his quickest and fastest pass of the weekend.

Price continues to struggle and he will not make the show.

Stordeur had problems again with the centerline. He crossed it on the top end
getting real close to Furr. In the darkness you could see the sparks from the
header as he was attempting to keep it in his lane.

Here we go with quickest field in "Scremin' Eagle" Nitro Harley history.
Vancil was out of the gate first and then got over close to centerline, but held on
for the win light.

(L) Steve Stordeur (Mancuso Racing '99 Harley) 0.542 (Broke)
Stordeur left first and then had problems right off the starting line and
coasted to a stop on the top end. Mattioli stuttered on the starting line, but then
drove it through for the win light.
(W) Mike Romine (Chromatic Inc '01 Harley) 0.490 6.518 200.59
(L) Jay Turner (Waugh Enterprises '00 Harley) 0.498 6.584 200.68
This was a great drag race as Romine got him on the starting line and then
stretched it out to hold off the hard charging Turner. It what I think was the
quickest side-by-side Nitro Harley race.
(W) Johnny Mancuso (Mancuso Racing '01 Harley) 0.524 6.700 202.94
(L) Bob Malloy ('00 Harley) 0.529 6.771 177.16
Mancuso was out of the gate first, but Malloy was in the lead at half track.
But Mancuso was able to chase him down and drive by at the 1000-foot mark to take
the win.
Romine with lane choice over Mancuso, Vancil will get to pick his
lane against Mattioli.

Vancil drilled him on the tree and just stretched it out from there.

Romine did his job on the tree, but Mancuso had the power to chase him down
around 1000 feet.
Margin of victory = 0.022 seconds (approximately 6 feet).
Vancil will have
lane choice in the finals.

Vancil is out of the gate first, but then they both have problems. It became
a coasting battle and Mancuso won it. Mancuso with his sixth national event win
here. This is his second win here at the Holley Spring Nationals, he also won here
in 1999.
