Results for Qualifying 1

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Mopar Pro Modified at the Tenth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts President's Cup Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Kent Ferrell Runs 14.554/75.46, Now #1
Right Lane: Marc Hayes No Time, Now #2
3:28 PM Hayes left before the tree was activated. Ferrell launched, shook, and shut it down.
Left Lane: Billy Harper Runs 20.534/34.99, Now #3
Right Lane: Mark Hemling Runs 12.651/76.95, Now #1
Hemling's car is painted in a red, white, and blue bunting motif. It doesn't help. Both cars shook, Hemling backing off and cruising through while Harper coasted with a dead engine.
Left Lane: Ed Burnley Jr No Time, Now #6
Right Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 6.797/162.22, Now #1
Burnley had a nitrous explosion, sending pieces of "stuff" flying. Stott's run looked okay, but he was out of it way before the finish line.
Left Lane: Chris Cline Runs 11.589/75.83, Now #3
Right Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.186/229.70, Now #1
Cline's car shook and danced on the launch, but Janis' car went straight down the groove, destroying both ends of the track record and running a pending World speed record.
Left Lane: Scott Ray Runs 7.173/185.33, Now #3
Right Lane: Michael Faucher No Time, Now #10
Faucher is driving Kjell-Hakan Mostrom's Corvette, Mostrom back in Sweden tending to the furniture business. He has problems on the launch, the car sputtering and then coasting, the chute popping out as he pulled over next to the wall. Ray got his car down the track, nothing spectacular, but with the problems he's been having it's a step in the right direction.
Left Lane: Carl Moyer Runs 6.312/222.47, Now #2
Right Lane: Michael Lockwood Runs 6.362/222.51, Now #3
Two pretty good opening runs, both teams getting a nice baseline to tune from.
Left Lane: Steve Vick Runs 10.902/78.82, Now #7
Right Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.275/226.92, Now #2
Vick's Camaro launched into shake, moving first toward the wall and then making a hard move toward the centerline. Pittman went right down the groove with no visible shake.
Left Lane: Harold Martin Runs 13.386/68.33, Now #11
Right Lane: Chip King Runs 6.331/225.30, Now #4
King made a nice run, clean and straight. Martin launched straight ahead, but his rear tires were chattering and he shut it down.
Left Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.306/223.10, Now #3
Right Lane: Kevin O'Dell Runs 6.414/219.15, Now #7
Hood shows there's nothing wrong with the left lane with a smooth, straight opening effort. O'Dell's run was also clean and straight, but a full tenth slower than Hood's.
Left Lane: Quain Stott Runs 11.245/71.38, Now #12
Right Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 8.928/98.33, Now #10
Stott shook and shut off. Cossis launched and then there were several flashes of flame from under the car, but no oil on the track.
Left Lane: Paul Athey Runs 6.841/158.69, Now #9
Right Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 13.471/62.63, Now #17
Athey was on a good run, but the engine went silent way before the finish line. Jenkins launched, shook, headed for the centerline, and shut it off.
Left Lane: Mike Castellana No Time, Now #0
Right Lane: Barney Squiers No Time, Now #0
Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 7.894/108.01, Now #11
Right Lane: Barney Squiers Runs 8.566/126.32, Now #12
Both cars shook and both drivers pedaled, Castellana getting very close to the wall before throwing in the towel.
Left Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 7.058/139.10, Now #11
Right Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.327/220.91, Now #5
Hahn launched hard and appeared to be enroute to a very quick elapsed time, but there was a flash of vapor from under the car at half track and the engine went silent. Hoover made a nice opening run, clean and mostly straight.
Left Lane: Tommy Mauney Runs 16.688/64.33, Now #24
Right Lane: Carl Spiering Runs 6.555/216.65, Now #9
The previous pair of cars stopped short and these two had to shut their engines off after completing their burnouts and preparing to stage. Both teams chose to run immediately instead of cooling down and coming back later. Mauney's car slowed immediately. Spiering's car went toward the wall and he did a job of driving to save the run.
Left Lane: Al Billes Runs 9.950/91.28, Now #18
Right Lane: Ed Wasserbeck Runs 6.899/157.43, Now #12
Last pair of the round. Billes shook, headed for the centerline, and shut it off. Wasserbeck sacrificed an engine, leaving a heavy smoke cloud starting at half track. But the track was dry, no oil.

Results for Qualifying 2

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Mopar Pro Modified at the Tenth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts President's Cup Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Tommy Gray No Time, Now #29
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 13.644/109.29, Now #18
                                  No Prior Run
10:09 PM Gray didn't run in the first round and has been conspicuously absent most of the 2001 season. It's a popular car with the fans and it's good to see him back. Gray pulled the trigger too early and then shook hard. Patterson launched and his car went into wild gyrations, fishtailing violently and up on two wheels at least once before he reined it in. The track crew reported fuel on the track, so he may have had a fuel leak that lubricated at least one of the rear tires.
Left Lane: Ed Wasserbeck Runs 11.089/74.89, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.899/157.43, Was #12
Right Lane: Al Billes Runs 11.140/78.85, Now #15
Best prior run: 9.950/91.28, Was #15
Both cars spun the tires and shook hard, Wasserbeck heading for the centerline and Billes toward the wall.
Left Lane: Carl Spiering No Time, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.555/216.65, Was #9
Right Lane: Tommy Mauney No Time, Now #20
                                  No Prior Run
Spiering's car almost clipped the wall and both cars shook hard, then coasted. Missed their times.
Left Lane: Michael Faucher Runs 11.356/76.05, Now #17
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Paul Athey Runs 15.333/48.14, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.841/158.69, Was #11
Same story, both cars overpowering the launch pad.
Left Lane: Mike Janis No Time, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.186/229.70, Was #1
Right Lane: Mike Castellana No Time, Now #28
                                  No Prior Run
These two made their burnouts and then shut their engines off, the previous pair not clear of the top end. Race officials huddle and decided to pull the plug, the track too cold and damp to hold the power these cars generate. The cars remaining in line will receive their five-point award for clean runs, but we're through for the evening except for the jet-powered exhibition runs.

Results for Qualifying 3

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Mopar Pro Modified at the Tenth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts President's Cup Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Kevin O'Dell Runs 6.433/217.35, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.414/219.15, Was #8
Right Lane: Scott Ray No Time, Now #29
                                  No Prior Run
2:42 PM Time for "the bad boys!" The bump spot as we open the third round is Quain Stott's 11.245, so you know the field will scramble before this round is over. Ray's car was fishtailing as he launched and kept on wiggling, moving further and further to the left, finally crossing the centerline just before half track (but he missed the timing reflectors). Clean pass for O'Dell, well ahead of Ray before they shared the left lane.
Left Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 11.224/79.79, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.327/220.91, Was #5
Right Lane: Paul Athey Runs 10.132/85.30, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.841/158.69, Was #11
One car we won't see is Carl Moyer - he sold his car and "retired" last night.

Athey had the front wheels way up and the rear tires spinning. Hoover launched hard and then slowed immediately.
Left Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 6.348/220.98, Now #7
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Ed Burnley Jr Runs 7.001/170.97, Now #14
                                  No Prior Run
Nice pass by Cossis, clean and straight. Burnley's car spun the tires hard on the launch with a 1.189 60-foot time.
Left Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 6.425/221.09, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.797/162.22, Was #11
Right Lane: Kent Ferrell Runs 13.390/86.07, Now #22
                                  No Prior Run
Ferrell's car shook and danced on the launch and he shut it down. Stott's pass looked okay, but he was off the pace all the way down the track.
Left Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.192/229.47, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.186/229.70, Was #1
Right Lane: Harold Martin Runs 6.383/222.25, Now #9
Best prior run: 13.386/68.33, Was #21
Nice runs in both lanes, Janis backing up the World speed record at 229.70 and Martin moving into the field. That bumps Barney Squiers, putting Fred Hahn on the bubble at 7.058.
Left Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.242/224.51, Now #2
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Chris Cline Runs 11.505/99.98, Now #22
                                  No Prior Run
Nice run by "the Ice Man," straight and smooth. That bumps Hahn, putting Burnley on the bubble at 7.001.
Left Lane: Mark Hemling Runs 6.393/222.11, Now #11
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Steve Vick Runs 10.647/76.57, Now #21
                                  No Prior Run
Vick had the front wheels in the air and the rear tires shaking, so he shut it down. Nice run by Hemling to bump Burnley. Now the bump spot is Ed Wasserbeck's 6.899.
Left Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.282/225.11, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.275/226.92, Was #3
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 9.784/80.28, Now #20
                                  No Prior Run
Castellana's '57 Chevy shook and turned hard left on the launch, so he shut it down. Nice, straight pass by Pittman, his second twenty of the weekend.
Left Lane: Michael Lockwood Runs 9.813/90.69, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.362/222.51, Was #9
Right Lane: Tommy Mauney Runs 10.442/93.34, Now #22
Best prior run: 11.631/79.52, Was #26
Mauney had the wheels up and the car turned left. Lockwood's engine was making popcorn. Both shut off early.
Left Lane: Chip King Runs 6.324/222.25, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.331/225.30, Was #7
Right Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.321/222.88, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.306/223.10, Was #4
Two nice runs, side-by-side all the way down the track.
Left Lane: Marc Hayes Runs 6.929/215.41, Now #18
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.573/217.98, Now #15
Best prior run: 11.245/71.38, Was #24
Stott shook and pedaled, getting in the field, but with a soft time. Hayes also shook, hard, and got completely out of the throttle before continuing.
Left Lane: Barney Squiers Runs 6.915/200.00, Now #18
Best prior run: 8.566/126.32, Was #21
Right Lane: Billy Harper Runs 11.543/74.61, Now #28
Best prior run: 20.534/34.99, Was #30
Harper's Viper fishtailed on the launch, first heading for the wall and then the centerline. Squiers left hard, but fell off the pace by the 330-foot marker.
Left Lane: Tommy Gray Runs 6.588/214.66, Now #17
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 6.124/230.49, Now #1
Best prior run: 7.058/139.10, Was #21
Hahn was on a good run yesterday and had engine problems. No engine problems here, the quickest and fastest run ever, the car actually left of the groove for much of the run, almost crossing the centerline.
Left Lane: Michael Faucher Runs 6.437/208.23, Now #16
Best prior run: 11.356/76.05, Was #27
Right Lane: Al Billes Runs 6.374/225.15, Now #11
Best prior run: 9.950/91.28, Was #24
More shuffling, two cars bumped out in "one swell foop." Now the bump is Faucher's 6.437.
Left Lane: Ed Wasserbeck Runs 6.446/214.04, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.899/157.43, Was #21
Right Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 6.244/224.88, Now #4
Best prior run: 13.644/109.29, Was #31
Two more good runs, but Patterson's is the only one good enough to get in - way in. That bumps Faucher, putting Mitch Stott on the bubble at 6.425.
Left Lane: Carl Spiering Runs 6.597/222.44, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.555/216.65, Was #19
Spiering shook and pedaled twice to get out of it.

8:37 PM Here we go with the last round of qualifying for this event. The bump is Mitch Stott's 6.425 and that should fall rather early in the round. Both cars shook and danced, almost collecting the wall before shutting down.
Left Lane: Al Billes Runs 11.170/81.07, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.374/225.15, Was #12

Two more blown cars. Billes' car headed for the centerline and he shut it off. Wasserbeck got out of the groove, to the left, pedaled, and continued, but lost some elapsed time and came up short.
Left Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 12.061/67.63, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.124/230.49, Was #1

Hahn launched hard, with a 1.016 60-foot time, and Faucher was even quicker with a 1.009. But both cars shook, Hahn pulling the plug without incident while Faucher was skating all over the lane, almost crossing the centerline on two wheels, then almost hitting the wall.
Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 13.631/70.61, Now #27
                                  No Prior Run

Best prior run: 6.186/229.70, Was #2
Janis runs the quickest and fastest lap in history, resetting the World speed record at 230.53 but running too quickly to use his 6.186 as a backup for an ET record. Ray;'s car was extremely rich, fat orange header flames all the way down the track.
Left Lane: Chris Cline Runs 13.952/61.96, Now #29
                                  No Prior Run

Left Lane: Billy Harper Runs 18.153/38.24, Now #31
Best prior run: 20.534/34.99, Was #31

Best prior run: 6.327/220.91, Was #10
Harper's car shook and he coasted through. Hoover shook and then the rear end locked up with a spray of sparks under the rear of the car. There are wheel bearings on the track, confirming the mechanical failure.
Left Lane: Tommy Mauney Runs 14.161/69.45, Now #28
Best prior run: 11.631/79.52, Was #28

Mauney's weekend ends about 30 feet off the starting line, the car shaking and Mauney shutting it down. Hemling shook and pedaled out of it.
Left Lane: Kent Ferrell No Time, Now #32
                                  No Prior Run

Best prior run: 6.915/200.00, Was #25
Two more looking for a 6.425 or better to get in. Ferrell had a nitrous explosion, a big fireball out the hood scoop. Squiers made his best run of the weekend, by far, but came up a few hundredths short.
Left Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.419/221.23, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.573/217.98, Was #22

Right Lane: Marc Hayes Runs 6.761/216.62, Now #24
Best prior run: 6.929/215.41, Was #26
Just three cars left to run tonight, none yet in the field. Athey launched hard, but the car started spinning the tires and then the engine hit the rev limiter, fishtailing several times. Hayes made his best run of the weekend but was eons short of the bump time.
Right Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 19.351/36.15, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.275/226.92, Was #6
Oops, Pittman was already in and didn't have enough clutch in it, a very soft launch and an early shutdown.

Results for Elimination Round 1

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Mopar Pro Modified at the Tenth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts President's Cup Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Michael Lockwood ('66 Chevy Corvette) 0.454 6.546 213.74
 (L) Mitch Stott (Radiac Abrasives '63 Chevy Corv 0.489 9.840 108.16
12:56 PM Stott is in as first-alternate, for suddenly-retired Carl Moyer. Stott launched, shook, skated around a bit, and pulled the plug. Lockwood spun the tires hard on the launch, killing his elapsed time, but won easily.
 (W) Ed Hoover (Trussel Constr. '63 Chevy Corvett 0.450 6.316 223.91
 (L) Ronnie Hood (Fulwylie M'Sports '63 Chevy Cor 0.466 6.329 222.03
Two good runs, the cars not far apart on the launch and tied together all the way to the line. Margin of victory = 0.029 seconds (approximately 9 feet).
 (W) Shannon Jenkins ('68 Chevy Camaro) 0.516 6.940 217.77
 (L) Mark Hemling ('63 Chevy Corvette) 0.437 7.797 212.09
Hemling got in on a last-ditch run last night. Both cars shook, Hemling slowing immediately and Jenkins about 100 feet out. Then each driver realized the other was having problems and got back in it, Jenkins with better momentum and the win.
 (W) Mike Janis (Jan Cen Engines '63 Chevy Corvet 0.446 6.173 229.90
 (L) Quain Stott (Lee Boy '63 Chevy Corvette) 0.502 6.459 221.60
Janis needed a 6.173 to back up his 6.112 as an ET record and he did exactly that. Stott's car shook and skated around a bit and fell behind quickly. The speed also backs up his 230.53 as the new speed record. Janis has lane choice against Lockwood in round two.
 (W) Fred Hahn (Summit Racing '01 Chevy Corvette) 3.518 6.169 231.20
 (L) Kevin O'Dell (O'Dell Electric '53 Studebaker 0.547 9.979 87.82
And Hahn comes back with a backup of his own, taking the speed record from Janis. That also gives him lane choice over Hoover next round.
 (W) Chip King ('01 Dodge Avenger) 0.531 6.303 223.54
 (L) Al Billes (Quaker State '53 Studebaker) 0.480 11.415 71.94
Billes beat King off the line, but then his Studebaker shook and fishtailed violently.
 (W) Alan Pittman (Westbrook M'Sports '41 Willys) 0.482 6.266 225.22
 (L) Steve Cossis (CompetitionPlus.com '53 Chevy 0.441 8.245 116.64
Pittman makes his best run of the weekend and earns lane choice against Jenkins next round. Cossis fell victim to shake.
