Results for Qualifying 1

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley at the Tenth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts President's Cup Nationals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Jamie Emery Runs 7.563/159.59, Now #2
Right Lane: Mike Romine Runs 6.665/198.52, Now #1
2:45 PM Nice pass by Romine, carrying the front wheel well past half track. Emery's front wheel was planted for the entire run, not a good sign.
Left Lane: Bill Furr Runs 7.000/189.76, Now #3
Right Lane: Stan Verheijen Runs 6.874/194.49, Now #2
Neither bike was very quick over the first 300 feet or so and it shows in their elapsed times.
Left Lane: Doug Vancil Runs 6.554/218.87, Now #1
Right Lane: Jack Romine Runs 6.823/193.93, Now #3
Wow! Vancil nails it on his first run of the event, a solid elapsed time and a big speed. Romine's pass was okay, but he'll need to pick it up a bit to stay in the field by the end of qualifying.
Left Lane: Ray Price Runs 6.706/181.81, Now #4
Right Lane: Steve Stordeur Runs 6.704/199.94, Now #3
Something came off Price's bike on the top end, possibly a drive belt. Whatever it was, the bike slowed abruptly - he was on a much better pass than the numbers that came up.
Left Lane: Tony Mattioli Runs 6.774/211.56, Now #6
Right Lane: Johnny Mancuso Runs 6.675/200.89, Now #3
In Rockingham, Mattioli suffered a huge engine explosion that lifted his body in the air and destroyed the motorcycle. He pulled this bike out of mothballs - and is surprisingly quick and fast right out of the box.
Right Lane: Jay Turner Runs 8.605/104.07, Now #11
Turner got it back on the wheelie bar, smoked the tire, throttled back, tried again, then threw in the towel.

Results for Qualifying 2

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley at the Tenth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts President's Cup Nationals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Johnny Mancuso Runs 8.371/112.37, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.675/200.89, Was #3
Right Lane: Bill Furr Runs 6.768/196.90, Now #6
Best prior run: 7.000/189.76, Was #9
9:31 PM Most of the Pro Stock cars skipped tonight's session. Looks like most of the the motorcyclists are in line, however. Mancuso slowed immediately, couldn't see why in the darkness. Furr made a fairly good run to get in the field, though that time may not stand up.
Left Lane: Steve Stordeur Runs 6.547/210.57, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.704/199.94, Was #4
Right Lane: Doug Vancil Runs 6.669/202.09, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.554/218.87, Was #1
These two head the points battle, Stordeur's chances hurt last weekend when he went out early. Both ran it all the way through the lights, Stordeur leading the way, taking the #1 qualifying spot away from Vancil.
Left Lane: Mike Romine Runs 7.264/137.22, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.665/198.52, Was #3
Right Lane: Jamie Emery Runs 7.566/176.63, Now #10
Best prior run: 7.563/158.58, Was #10
Romine's run started off well, but he shut it down shortly after half track. Emery's front wheel was planted all the way, not a good sign.
Left Lane: Jay Turner Runs 19.670/42.67, Now #11
Best prior run: 8.605/104.07, Was #11
Right Lane: Tony Mattioli No Time, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.774/211.56, Was #7
When Mattioli's engine exploded in Rockingham, the blast lifted his body in the air, looking like the "Superman" move trick riders perform, their hands on the handlebars and their bodies above the bike. Here his engine went away before the burnout and he hopped off the bike. Turner's engine sputtered and died on the launch.
Left Lane: Stan Verheijen Runs 7.982/140.04, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.874/194.49, Was #9
Right Lane: Ray Price Runs 7.935/117.20, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.706/181.81, Was #5
Price was sitting up and leaning way to the left to stay off the wall, finally shutting it down. Verheijen started off well, but his engine sputtered and died at half track.
Left Lane: Jack Romine Runs 9.672/89.74, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.823/193.93, Was #8
Romine was off the throttle by the 330-foot marker to end the round, Stordeur's fine run the highlight of an otherwise disappointing round.

Results for Qualifying 3

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley at the Tenth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts President's Cup Nationals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Jay Turner Runs 8.609/102.11, Now #11
Best prior run: 8.605/104.07, Was #11
Right Lane: Tony Mattioli Runs 6.749/197.16, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.774/211.56, Was #7
1:43 PM Last night both these riders had problems, Mattioli in the water and Turner on the launch. Mattioli recovers nicely here with a clean run, but Turner's bike once again struggles off the starting line, the front wheel banging down about 100 feet out.
Left Lane: Jack Romine Runs 6.720/203.58, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.823/193.93, Was #8
Right Lane: Ray Price Runs 6.596/213.00, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.706/181.81, Was #5
Price made a very pretty run, the front wheel just a few inches in the air and bobbing up and down slightly most of the way down the track. Meanwhile, Romine accomplished his objective, getting off the bump spot. Now it's Bill Furr who is sweating it out with a 6.768.
Left Lane: Stan Verheijen Runs 6.803/202.33, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.874/194.49, Was #9
Right Lane: Jamie Emery Runs 7.516/170.56, Now #10
Best prior run: 7.563/158.58, Was #10
Verheijen was very close all the way through, a pretty good run, but just slightly off the qualifying pace. Emery's bike was slow off the mark and never picked it up.
Left Lane: Johnny Mancuso Runs 6.605/212.53, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.675/200.89, Was #5
Right Lane: Bill Furr Runs 6.786/199.97, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.768/196.90, Was #8
mancuso carried the front wheel to half track on a good run. Furr failed to improve and will have to sweat it out a while longer.
Left Lane: Steve Stordeur Runs 6.482/207.18, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.547/210.57, Was #1
Right Lane: Doug Vancil Runs 6.589/203.34, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.554/218.87, Was #2
Vancil leads Stordeur by 161 points and is close to slamming the door on the championship, but that doesn't keep Stordeur from staking his claim to this race, solidifying his #1 qualifying spot with a very strong run.
Left Lane: Mike Romine Runs 6.562/239.27, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.665/198.52, Was #5
Romine made a very nice pass, but nobody believes the speed, Romine's front wheel clearing the speed start beam and then tripping the speed stop beam at the finish line.

Results for Qualifying 4

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley at the Tenth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts President's Cup Nationals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Ray Price Runs 6.570/215.34, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.596/213.00, Was #4
Right Lane: Johnny Mancuso Runs 6.646/203.31, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.605/212.53, Was #5
7:22 PM Mancuso is a youngster by comparison with Price - by thirteen years! That doesn't keep Price from spanking the "youngster," Price with his second fifty of the day. Nice run for Mancuso, too, but if things don't change he will not have lane choice against Price tomorrow.
Left Lane: Doug Vancil Runs 6.763/201.97, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.554/218.87, Was #2
Right Lane: Jay Turner Runs 6.516/206.39, Now #2
Best prior run: 8.605/104.07, Was #11
Turner fights back like a bulldog, moving into the second spot on the ladder. That bumps Bill Furr, putting Tony Mattioli on the bubble at 6.749 and pushing Ray Price down into the bottom half of the field.
Left Lane: Bill Furr Runs 7.277/138.31, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.768/196.90, Was #9
Right Lane: Stan Verheijen Runs 9.417/91.73, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.803/202.33, Was #10
Verheijen got very close to the centerline, leaning so far to the right that his pipes dragged on the track in a shower of sparks. Furr was on a qualifying pace, but slowed on the top end.
Left Lane: Tony Mattioli Runs 6.622/203.65, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.749/197.16, Was #8
Right Lane: Steve Stordeur No Time, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.482/207.18, Was #1
Stordeur broke on the line. Mattioli made a nice, smooth pass with his undersized engine to move off the bump spot.
Left Lane: Jamie Emery Runs 7.772/177.88, Now #11
Best prior run: 7.516/170.56, Was #11
Right Lane: Mike Romine Runs 6.535/213.77, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.562/239.27, Was #4
Emery was slow off the line and never picked it up. Nice pass by Romine to move up one rung on the quick side of the ladder.
Right Lane: Jack Romine Runs 6.799/199.23, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.720/203.58, Was #8
And Jack Romine closes the round, failing to improve.

Results for Elimination Round 1

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley at the Tenth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts President's Cup Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Jack Romine (Homewood H-D '99 Puppet) 0.443 6.883 190.22
 (L) Steve Stordeur (Mancuso Racing '99 Weekend) 0.482 6.876 204.76
11:53 AM Conditions are almost perfect, low sixties and overcast, but Stordeur is way off his qualifying pace and Romine pulls off the upset. All Doug Vancil needs to do to clinch the 2001 championship is win his first round match with Ray Price.
 (W) Ray Price (Ray Price H-D '00 Dixie) 0.587 7.062 156.41
 (L) Doug Vancil (Vance & Hines '00 Weekend) 0.489 7.535 127.75
Another upset, the championship battle on hold now until Shreveport. Vancil led to half track, but then his bike slowed and Price drove around him for an easy win despite an off-pace run. Price faces Jack Romine next round, Romine with lane choice.
 (W) Jay Turner (Team Bulldog '00 Dixie) 0.545 6.556 204.08
 (L) Tony Mattioli (McClure Racing '01 Puppet) 0.497 6.697 201.10
Mattioli left first and ran the second-quickest run of the round, but lost to the quickest run of the round, Turner running close to his qualifying pace. Margin of victory = 0.093 seconds (approximately 27 feet).
 (W) Johnny Mancuso (Mancuso H-D '00 Weekend) 0.492 6.576 214.86
 (L) Mike Romine (Chromatic Inc '01 Weekend) 0.495 6.584 207.88
This one was close, the two leaving right together and Mancuso pulling slightly ahead in the first 330 feet, then the two welded together the rest of the way down the track. Mancuso got the win light, but lost lane choice to Turner in the semifinals. He also lost an engine, the track crew cleaning up lots of "shrapnel" in the shutdown area.

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Ray Price (Ray Price H-D '00 Dixie) 0.458 6.488 207.66
 (L) Jack Romine (Homewood H-D '99 Puppet) 0.514 6.882 200.23
5:19 PM A little rain, a little synthetic oil, and we're behind schedule.

This one was Price all the way, but there was a flash of flame from his bike and something bounced over the left-hand wall as he neared the finish line.
 (W) Johnny Mancuso (Mancuso H-D '00 Weekend) 0.494 6.523 217.63
 (L) Jay Turner (Team Bulldog '00 Dixie) 0.642 7.466 201.16
Turner's reaction time wasn't really that bad, but his bike rocked back on the wheelie bar and smoked the tire before it moved an inch. Mancuso wins "unmolested" but loses lane choice to Price in the finals.

Results for Final Round

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 3 eliminations in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley at the Tenth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts President's Cup Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Ray Price (Ray Price H-D '00 Dixie) 0.533 6.607 191.40
 (L) Johnny Mancuso (Mancuso H-D '00 Weekend) 0.493 6.749 206.83
6:49 PM This one was closer than you'd expect after Mancuso smoked the tire and had to back off the throttle to regain traction. Price's engine gave up the ghost on the top end and Mancuso was closing fast - but ran out of race track. Margin of victory = 0.102 seconds (approximately 31 feet). Price was more than a tenth of a second quicker than Mancuso at half track and was running 200 mph at that point, and was two tenths quicker at 1,000 feet, then slowed abruptly.
