Results for Qualifying 1
BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at
the Tenth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts President's Cup Nationals listing lane, driver
name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Philip Hooper No Time, Now #2
Right Lane: Dan Roman Runs 9.097/102.77, Now #1
2:56 PM Both cars hit the 660-foot timing reflector - Hooper when he got out
of shape with tire shake and Roman, who slowed early in the run when his car made a
hard move toward the wall, when Hooper's car threw it into the right lane.
Hooper's run was disqualified, Roman's wasn't since the reflector was no longer on
the centerline when he hit it.
Left Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 5.912/238.17, Now #1
Right Lane: Bobby Baucom Runs 6.037/232.11, Now #2
Two good opening runs here, right down the groove with little visible tire
shake.
Left Lane: Bruce Mullins Runs 5.869/235.89, Now #1
Right Lane: Dave Ray Runs 6.038/234.09, Now #4
Haven't seen Mullins in a while, but he hasn't forgotten how it's done, his
opening pass right down the groove, smooth and quick. Ray also made a smooth,
clean run, but Mullins ran away from him.
Left Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 6.003/233.88, Now #3
Right Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 6.014/238.93, Now #4
Cannister's car rolled in a bit deep, turning out the pre-stage bulb. Both
cars went right down the groove, nice tuning passes for both teams.
Left Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 5.916/213.77, Now #3
Right Lane: Scott Weney Runs 7.337/148.90, Now #8
This is the first time we've seen Weney in a long time. He is in Bob White's car
and he had a horrible pass, spinning the tires hard, pedaling, spinning them again,
pedaling, and then they bit. Then there was a loud POP and the car slowed at half
track. Meanwhile, Bogolo went from A to B with very little fuss, but his car
slowed on the top end, the reason not evident from here.
Left Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 6.001/240.55, Now #5
Right Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 5.955/232.35, Now #4
Thomas shook and drove through it with a big speed. Nice opening run for
Tigges, smooth and fairly straight. His crew was thrashing under the car in the
staging lanes, but it appears that whatever was wrong was corrected before the
run.
Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 5.816/234.17, Now #1
Right Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.893/239.02, Now #3
Very pretty run by Brand and almost as pretty by Vouros. Brand ends up just
0.013 seconds short of the track elapsed time record and Vouros wasn't far behind
him.
Left Lane: Billy Gibson Runs 11.540/79.69, Now #15
Right Lane: Mike Comella Runs 8.823/93.50, Now #13
Tire shake, violent, in both lanes. Gibson shut off quickly. Comella tried
to drive through it and his car got very close to the wall before he also pulled
the plug.
Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 6.133/228.73, Now #12
Right Lane: Bobby Martindale Runs 6.269/226.51, Now #13
Lee is in the "Cape Codder," driven by Charlie Gambino last weekend. Both
cars were a tad loose, out of the groove for part of the run.
Left Lane: Ronnie Midyette Runs 16.690/85.25, Now #19
Right Lane: Bunny Burkett Runs 12.378/66.10, Now #18
Both cars had problems getting off the starting line. Midyette's car lurched
and sputtered, then the engine went silent. Burkett's car launched, shook, headed
for the centerline, and she shut it off.
Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.161/203.49, Now #13
Last car of the round. McMillen's run looked okay, but he was out of the
throttle well before the finish line.

name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best
prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Best prior run: 12.378/66.10, Was #18
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 14.940/68.56, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.001/240.55, Was #7
9:43 PM Thomas barely made it off the line and just coasted to the finish.
Burkett made a strong start but drifted left and almost hit the wall. She stayed
with it and salvaged the run.
Left Lane: Dave Ray Runs 11.052/78.38, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.038/234.09, Was #11
Right Lane: Dale Brand Runs 5.801/238.26, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.816/234.17, Was #1
9:48 PM Dale Brand dropped his ET and picked up speed and set a new track
record by two-thousandths of a second. He proved that the track is not too cold and
damp to make a good run tonight.
Left Lane: Mike Comella Runs 5.854/240.81, Now #2
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 5.909/239.61, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.912/238.17, Was #4
9:50 PM Two more great runs by Comella and Rector, with both running in the
fives. As best we can tell, this may have been the best run of Comella's
career.
Left Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.869/237.96, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.893/239.02, Was #4
Right Lane: Ronnie Midyette Runs 13.161/97.53, Now #20
No Prior Run
9:53 PM There's nothing wrong with this track tonight as Vouros leaped off
the starting line and hit the 60-foot mark in just 0.983 seconds. Midyette's car
bogged down as it came off the line and he never got any power.
Left Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 14.690/48.65, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.014/238.93, Was #10
Right Lane: Philip Hooper Runs 6.346/206.13, Now #16
No Prior Run
9:55 PM Cannister's car shook the tires violently as she left the line so
she shut it down and gave up on this run. Hooper's run was unspectacular but enough
to put him into the field for now.
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 16.386/66.24, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.133/228.73, Was #13
9:58 PM The Cape Codder funny car shook the tires hard as Lee came off the
line, leaving him no choice but to shut it down.
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 9.936/87.91, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.161/203.49, Was #14
10:01 PM When the front wheels came up, McMillen backed off the throttle
and gave up on this run.
Right Lane: Billy Gibson Runs 6.158/226.62, Now #14
Best prior run: 11.540/79.69, Was #20
10:03 PM The car drifted left and tried to cross the center line, but
Gibson kept it under control and ran strong enough to put himself into the
field.

BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at
the Tenth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts President's Cup Nationals listing lane, driver
name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best
prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.855/238.26, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.869/237.96, Was #3
Right Lane: Philip Hooper Runs 6.159/230.84, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.346/206.13, Was #17
1:50 PM Hooper shook the tires a bit as he left the line. He stayed with it
but that was about all he could do. Vouros made a strong run to move into the
number three spot in the field for now.
Left Lane: Bobby Baucom No Time, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.037/232.11, Was #11
Right Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 5.922/235.84, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.003/233.88, Was #9
Baucom couldn't get his car started so he missed this run.
Left Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 6.062/238.47, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.955/232.35, Was #8
Right Lane: Ronnie Midyette Runs 6.096/231.32, Now #13
Best prior run: 13.161/97.53, Was #21
Tigges got very close to the outside wall but stayed with it. Midyette
drifted a bit on the track but kept it under control and made a run that was good
enough to put him into the field at this point in round three.
Left Lane: Dave Ray Runs 6.126/231.04, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.038/234.09, Was #12
Right Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 5.967/238.81, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.916/213.77, Was #6
Bogolo drifted a bit at the start but got things back under control and
turned this into a very good run.
Left Lane: Dan Roman Runs 6.257/224.28, Now #18
Best prior run: 9.097/102.77, Was #21
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.828/243.41, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.001/240.55, Was #9
Both drivers shook the tires but Thomas was able to drive out of it and turn
in a very good run. As of now, he is number two in the qualifying order.
Left Lane: Scott Weney No Time, Now #21
Best prior run: 7.337/148.90, Was #21
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 5.925/237.80, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.161/203.49, Was #17
Weney's car threw a rod on the burnout. McMillen ran by himself in the other
lane and went from 17th in the field to the ninth position. McMillen's run bumped
Hooper from the field. Billy Gibson is now on the bump with a 6.158 ET.
Left Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 5.867/237.84, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.014/238.93, Was #11
Right Lane: Billy Gibson Runs 17.419/42.32, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.158/226.62, Was #16
Gibson had severe tire shake as he came off the line and shut it down right
away. Cannister has been having trouble with tire shake at about 100 feet out, but
she seems to have solved that problem today. She had a little tire shake but drove
through it to move herself from 11th to fifth in the qualifying order.
Left Lane: Mike Comella Runs 6.403/164.35, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.854/240.81, Was #3
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector No Time, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.909/239.61, Was #7
Comella was on pace for a run in the high five-eighties, but threw a blower
belt. Rector shook the tires, took out the lane markers at the 330-foot mark and
ended up in the left lane, behind Comella. Rector oiled the track, so that will
cost him 20 points. He came into this race 88 points behind Mark Thomas so with the
oil down, he moves to 108 points down.
Right Lane: Dale Brand No Time, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.801/238.26, Was #1
Brand had a little tire shake but still pulled off a good run. But, it wasn't
enough to better his previous number one qualifying ET of 5.801.
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 6.143/228.34, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.133/228.73, Was #15
Lee shook the tries at 100 feet and never really got back into the run. He's
in the field for now, but at the 15th qualifying position, he is not a sure bet for
the elimination rounds.

Results for Qualifying 4
BUDDS CREEK, Md. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny
Car at the Tenth annual CARQUEST Auto Parts President's Cup Nationals listing lane,
driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run,
best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Billy Gibson Runs 16.968/31.42, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.158/226.62, Was #16
Right Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 5.836/243.63, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.955/232.35, Was #11
As this round started, Gibson sat on the bubble with a 6.158 ET. Gibson
shook the tires as he came off the line and shut down. Tigges, in the right lane,
came off the line strong and made the quickest and fastest run of his career.
Left Lane: Philip Hooper Runs 14.672/58.56, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.159/230.84, Was #17
Right Lane: Bobby Baucom Runs 15.785/54.23, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.037/232.11, Was #12
Before this round, Hooper was in 17th place, just one-thousandth of a second
behind Gibson. Both cars came off the line shaking the tires hard and both shut
down. Baucom stayed in 12th place and Hooper got to go home early.
Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 10.862/79.05, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.133/228.73, Was #15
Right Lane: Dave Ray Runs 6.570/179.95, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.038/234.09, Was #13
Lee came off the line and went hard to the left so he had to back off,
leaving a trail of aluminum down the track. Ray pedaled his way down the quarter
mile and did not improve his standing.
Left Lane: Ronnie Midyette Runs 5.929/233.76, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.096/231.32, Was #14
Right Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 5.869/239.44, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.867/237.84, Was #6
Midyette recorded a career best ET and speed on this run. Cannister looked
strong with her second 5.86 of the day.
Left Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 6.687/155.13, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.828/243.41, Was #2
Right Lane: Dan Roman Runs 12.944/75.29, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.257/224.28, Was #18
Roman was 18th before this round and sitting outside the field. He needed a
6.157 to get in and did not get it when he shook the tires hard at the start and
had to back off. Thomas was running strong but started sliding all over the track
at 1,000 feet. But because Thomas came into this round in second place, it
didn't
really matter to him.
Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 5.857/223.91, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.801/238.26, Was #1
Right Lane: Bunny Burkett Runs 6.101/234.66, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.403/206.10, Was #20
Bunny Burkett did a 660-foot burnout with a large American flag sticking out
of the blower hatch. In a surprise run, Burkett moved from 20th place to 15th place
in the field and bump Billy Gibson. Brand ran strong but left oil on the track at
1,000-feet. He'll lose 20 points in the standings as a result. Paul Lee is now on
the bubble with a 6.133-second ET.
Left Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 6.503/155.78, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.909/239.61, Was #8
Right Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.834/238.98, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.855/238.26, Was #5
Both drivers entered this round solidly in the middle of the field, so they
were only running for a better pairing. Rector had a good 60-foot time but fell off
the pace at half track. From there, it just got worse. Vouros drifted a bit to the
left but held on for a run that was only one-thousandth of a second off his career
best and enough to move him up two spots in the order.
Right Lane: Bobby Martindale Runs 6.690/170.06, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.269/226.51, Was #20
Martindale has been off the pace all weekend and the final qualifying round
was no exception.
