Results for Qualifying 1
STANTON, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the
20th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time,
top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Steve Smith Runs 5.075/250.37, Now #1
7:09 PM Smith was on a good run until the blower belt came off around the
1,000-foot marker, the car hooked up and the header flames solid.
Left Lane: Roger Dean No Time, Now #3
Right Lane: Louie Allison Runs 6.936/119.82, Now #2
Once again Jack Ostrander plans to qualify the second car if Allison can get
solidly into the field on his first pass. Dean's car stopped at the end of the
burnout with the nose of the car over next to the guard rail. The car wouldn't
move, so Dean got out of the car to let Allison run. He was on an even better run
than Smith's, but his blower belt came off around the 330-foot marker.
Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 8.068/97.26, Now #4
Right Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 4.954/270.81, Now #1
Head lost traction about 300 feet out. Litton got to half track before he
started hazing the tires, smoking them the rest of the way to the line.
Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.905/288.09, Now #2
Right Lane: Paul Romine Runs 4.800/301.60, Now #1
The top two in points give the crowd a good show to close the day,
side-by-side with Millican the early leader, ahead to half track, and Romine with
the top-end power to close the gap and go by, leading by the 1,000-foot
marker.

Results for Qualifying 2
STANTON, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Fuel at the
20th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top
speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed,
and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Jack Ostrander Runs 5.267/238.38, Now #5
No Prior Run
2:07 PM Ostrander chose to make his first pass of the season in front of his
home town fans here in Michigan, "Pontiac Jack" back in the saddle again. He is in
a brand new car. The car ran straight and true, with a soft and safe tuneup,
pushing Allison down a rung on the ladder.
Right Lane: Roger Dean Runs 5.636/193.54, Now #6
No Prior Run
Dean broke on the burnout yesterday, so this was his first official run. It
looked like the engine pushed out a head gasket on the right side, with a flash of
flame and then a fireball on the right side of the engine. We have oil, so Dean
will lose a total of 20 points on a "black flag" penalty (the penalty is a 15
point deduction, but he also won't get a 5 point bonus for making a clean run)
Left Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 5.116/233.76, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.954/270.81, Was #3
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.992/292.65, Now #4
Best prior run: 8.068/97.26, Was #8
Litton was a tenth of a second in front of Head at half track, but then
started smoking the tires and Head went by to get to the line first by almost a
tenth. No help for Litton, but that moves Head into the top half of the
field.
Left Lane: Paul Romine Runs 4.975/282.54, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.800/301.60, Was #1
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 5.681/166.31, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.905/288.09, Was #2
Yesterday Millican was quicker to half track in the left lane, then Romine
went by on the top half. This time they were dead even at half track, then both
started smoking the tires. Millican gave it up when the tires started spinning,
but Romine legged it out, trailing smoke all the way through the top half of the
run.

Results for Qualifying 3
STANTON, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Fuel
at the 20th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed
time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed
time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Steve Smith Runs 5.199/269.40, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.075/250.37, Was #5
8:53 PM This is it, nitro flames in the gathering twilight. The weather is
great and so is the crowd. Smith made a good run toi get the crowd stirred up,
the header flames on the left side getting weaker and weaker as he went down the
strip, but under power all the way.
Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.811/308.78, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.992/292.65, Was #4
Right Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 4.846/297.16, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.954/270.81, Was #3
Nice side-by-side show for the crowd, both drivers moving into the eighties
on runs that were straight and strong, the header flames tall all the way through
the lights in both lanes.
Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.749/308.43, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.905/288.09, Was #4
Right Lane: Paul Romine Runs 4.795/310.48, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.800/301.60, Was #1
Nice pair to conclude qualifying, this year's points leader and last year's
champion. They squared off in these same lanes yesterday evening and Millican was
quicker to half track, Romine to the finish line. This time Millican kept the
candles lit and strong all the way to the finish line, the first half a virtual
duplicate of his run yesterday and the top half equally as strong. Romine did all
he could, stepping up from his previous best with a much better speed, but Millican
took the top spot away from him anyway.

Results for Elimination Round 1
STANTON, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Top
Fuel at the 20th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Bruce Litton (WIX Filters Dragster) 0.493 4.899 296.89
(L) Steve Smith (Smith Trailers Dragster) 0.512 5.181 243.85
12:40 PM This was a good drag race, Smith right there most of the way until
his blower belt came off around the 1,000-foot marker.
(W) Jim Head (Dragster) 0.505 5.742 162.98
(L) Jack Ostrander (Dragster) 0.576 6.530 130.18
This was a coasting contest from 1,000 feet on. Ostrander shut it off and at
about the same time Head lost the blower belt.
(W) Paul Romine (CARQUEST Auto Parts Dragster) 0.484 4.841 301.40
(L) Roger Dean (Rupert Oil Dragster) 0.490 7.127 112.65
Dean's crew worked late to get a new engine together and in the car after
putting a rid through the side of the block yesterday. Their work got them to the
line, but the engine gave up halfway down the track. Meanwhile, Romine left on
time and streaked down the groove on the quickest run of the round so far, earning
lane choice over Head in round two.
(W) Clay Millican (Werner Dragster) 0.491 4.799 306.05
(L) Louie Allison (Vista Foods Dragster) 0.475 5.473 181.89
Allison gave Millican a race for the first half of the track, then Allison's
car nosed over and Millican's streaked to the finish line with low ET of the round,
so he will have lane choice against Litton in the semifinals.
Sunday
Results for Elimination Round 2
STANTON, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Top
Fuel at the 20th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Jim Head (Dragster) 0.475 4.855 298.73
(L) Paul Romine (CARQUEST Auto Parts Dragster) 0.471 4.918 297.68
3:02 PM The top half of the ladder survived the first round and this one
matches the #2 and #3 qualifiers. Romine deep-staged, but Head left right with him
anyway and then pulled slightly ahead, holding a small advantage the rest of the
way down the track, the two cars welded together. Margin of victory = 0.059
seconds (approximately 26 feet).
(W) Clay Millican (Werner Dragster) 0.472 4.846 300.73
(L) Bruce Litton (WIX Filters Dragster) 0.482 5.235 209.39
The #1 and #4 qualifiers make up the second pair. This was close to half
track, then there was a puff of raw fuel from Litton's pipes and Millican advanced
to the finals with lane choice over Head - by 0.009 seconds. Should be a good
one!
