Right Lane: Tim Nabors Runs 8.678/109.56, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.672/208.78, Was #5
5:44 PM We're more than an hour ahead of schedule after having just one
major delay during the day's qualifying sessions. Nabors' car was to the right of
the groove and kept trying to turn right, so he gave it up. Bartunek went the
wrong way with his adjustments.
Left Lane: Tony Fox Runs 6.752/207.88, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.724/208.39, Was #9
Right Lane: Joel Bayless Runs 9.085/97.11, Now #20
Best prior run: 11.348/69.14, Was #21

before he threw in the towel. Nice pass by Fox, within a few hundredths of his
earlier run, under cooler conditions.

Best prior run: 6.834/202.94, Was #18
Right Lane: Angelo Alesci Runs 6.787/206.07, Now #13

Best prior run: 6.691/207.62, Was #6
Right Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.751/207.66, Now #7

Right Lane: Chuck Demory Runs 6.823/204.39, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.770/205.29, Was #15
Baker reset the track speed record in the first session but the afternoon
heat has loosened the track and it's much tougher to get all the power to the
ground.
Left Lane: John Konigshofer Runs 6.745/209.30, Now #12
Best prior run: 9.483/97.81, Was #21
Right Lane: Ed Machacek Runs 6.806/205.29, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.784/205.22, Was #16
Konigshofer gets a full pass this round and bumps Machacek from the
field.
Left Lane: Richard Penland Runs 6.825/203.71, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.735/206.13, Was #11
Right Lane: Mark Hay Runs 6.773/206.29, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.747/201.28, Was #13
Hay doesn't appear to be having any teething problems with the new Grand Am,
making another solid, smooth pass here.

Best prior run: 6.839/204.63, Was #20
Right Lane: Jason Collins Runs 6.763/207.40, Now #15
No Prior Run

Best prior run: 6.655/209.79, Was #3
Right Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 7.557/143.83, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.708/208.01, Was #8
Lee makes another good run with his new engine after exiting from New York
early with his only engine broken. Now he has a strong new one and a healthy
backup.
Left Lane: David Jenkins No Time, Now #23
No Prior Run
This was a new car checkout for Jenkins' new '01 Mustang Cobra and it was a
good thing it was a solo pass because the throttle hung wide open, the engine
popping and banging against the RPM limiter and the car fishtailing violently.
Somehow Jenkins managed to miss all the cones despite sliding across the track,
into the right lane, and then back across the track, into the left lane again. He
didn't touch anything and managed to get the car shut off and stopped just past
half track. The crowd gave him a big hand for the show.

W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Dwayne Rice ('99 Pontiac Firebird) 0.508 6.859 204.63
(L) Tony Fox ('00 Ford Mustang) 3.785 (Broke)
11:47 AM Pro eliminations open with the middle of the Pro Stock ladder, the
two just 0.016 seconds apart in qualifying. The weather is relatively cool, in the
seventies, with hazy sunshine. The track temperature is around 115 degrees, so
the track shouldn't be a problem. Fox broke on the line and Rice advanced
unopposed
(W) Ron Miller (Moser Engineering '01 Pontiac Gr0.455 6.742 206.61
(L) Elijah Morton ('99 Ford Probe) 0.436 6.794 205.22
Morton was away first with a great light, but Miller ran him down by half
track. Margin of victory = 0.033 seconds (approximately 10 feet).
(W) John Montecalvo (Citgo '01 Chevy Cavalier) 0.475 6.730 206.07
(L) John Konigshofer ('98 Ford Probe) 0.443 7.767 162.88
Konigshofer got the holeshot he needed, but the car shook and he had to back
off, allowing Montecalvo to go by and win easily.
(W) Tim Nabors ('01 Chevy Cavalier) 0.411 6.699 206.61
(L) Richard Penland ('01 Pontiac Grand Am) 0.528 6.973 170.17
Nabors sawed the tree down and then ran our first sixty of the round for an
easy win.
(W) Brian Gahm ('01 Ford Mustang) 0.424 6.707 207.56
(L) Jason Collins ('98 Ford Probe) 0.408 6.747 206.04
Collins had a psychic light, but Gahm's wasn't much slower and Gahm made up
the difference by the 60 foot timer, then held on for the win. Margin of victory =
0.024 seconds (approximately 7 feet). He loses lane choice to Nabors.
(W) Tom Lee ('00 Ford Mustang) 0.448 6.685 208.39
(L) Angelo Alesci ('01 Chevy Cavalier) 0.436 6.835 204.91
Alesci needed more power to have a shot here, Lee running away on the top
half of the track. Lee runs low ET so far and has lane choice against Montecalvo
nest round.
(W) Carl Baker (Summit Racing '01 Mercury Cougar0.443 6.667 207.24
(L) Mark Hay ('01 Grand Am) 0.502 6.827 204.20

choice against Miller in round two.
(W) Chris Holbrook (Luckett-Bohanan '01 Ford Mus0.498 6.843 202.12
(L) Gene Wilson (Don Smith '00 Mercury Cougar) 0.853 6.833 194.80
The upset of the year! Wilson's car rolled into deep stage and that
apparently distracted him because Holbrook was half way to the 330-foot marker
before Wilson left. Holbrook wins and has lane choice against Rice in round
two.
