Results for Qualifying 1

STANTON, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Mopar Pro Modified at the 20th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.314/226.92, Now #1
Right Lane: Paul Athey No Time, Now #2
12:21 PM Athey made his burnout, backed up, and then the engine went silent. Janis' car made a hard move toward the centerline and he drove through it without lifting to post a track record ET.
Left Lane: Scott Ray Runs 6.602/211.66, Now #3
Right Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.319/223.50, Now #2
Two straight runs and Hood almost matches Janis' track record, just 0.005 seconds back.
Left Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.372/222.62, Now #3
Right Lane: Chip King Runs 6.415/218.94, Now #4
Pittman made a good run, but the car appeared to hesitate about 300 feet out. Clean pass for King.
Left Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 6.361/224.28, Now #3
Right Lane: Todd Howard Runs 6.401/219.06, Now #5
Two more clean runs, the left lane repair job apparently working well for the Pro Mods also.
Left Lane: Harold Martin Runs 7.391/138.80, Now #9
Right Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 7.011/130.61, Now #8
Two busted runs here, both drivers slowing well before the finish line - Hahn with the chutes out before he got to the stripe.
Left Lane: Al Billes Runs 10.937/77.67, Now #10
Right Lane: Steve Vick No Time, Now #12
Vick shut the car off after the burnout, looked like a nitrous explosion under the hood. Billes launched, the Studebaker got the right rear slick up in the air, and he shut it off.
Left Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.335/222.47, Now #3
Right Lane: Terry Housley Runs 6.624/211.53, Now #9
Housley's car was "hunting," the nose of the car swinging left and right most of the way down the track. Nice opening pass by Stott, clean and smooth.
Left Lane: Carl Moyer Runs 6.426/219.65, Now #8
Right Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.722/161.63, Now #11
Hoover's car was right of the groove most of the way down the track and there was a flash of flame from the headers around the 1,000-foot marker. Straight pass for Moyer.
Left Lane: Kevin O'Dell Runs 11.386/74.04, Now #16
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 6.347/219.51, Now #4
O'Dell went through the clutch, the RPMs going way up and staying there. Nice pass by Castellana, straight and smooth.
Left Lane: Michael Lockwood Runs 6.377/221.02, Now #7
Right Lane: Sal Passarelli No Time, Now #20
Passarelli's car moved forward as he brought the RPMs up and he rolled out of the beams before the tree was activated. Nice run for Lockwood, straight and smooth.
Left Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 6.920/149.85, Now #14
Right Lane: Chris Cline Runs 13.703/77.68, Now #19
Cline's car launched and died.
Left Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 6.296/224.06, Now #1
Right Lane: Ron Kammes Runs 6.647/216.93, Now #14
McAmis launched hard, a 1.016 60-foot time, and reset Janis' recent track ET record on a very straight pass.
Left Lane: Ed Wasserbeck No Time, Now #26
Right Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.282/223.14, Now #1
Wasserbeck was shut down on the line for a fluid leak. Jenkins' launch was much softer than McAmis', a 1.043, but he made up for it on the top end and once again the track record is eclipsed. If there were any doubts about whether the track grinding here before this event did any good, the numbers from this first round alone should put them to rest. The track ET record has been reset three times already, with two of those runs in the "impossible" left lane.
Left Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 6.493/201.88, Now #13
Right Lane: Mel Eaves Runs 6.600/209.30, Now #14
Both cars appeared to have some engine damage on the top end.
Right Lane: Dan Rowe Runs 6.421/217.21, Now #12
Rowe's '38 Chevy tested both edges of the groove, first to thew left and then the right, enroute to the finish line.

That wraps up the first round of qualifying for the Pro categories. They will be be back late this afternoon.

Results for Qualifying 2

STANTON, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Mopar Pro Modified at the 20th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Dan Rowe Runs 6.351/219.40, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.421/217.21, Was #12
Right Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 6.452/217.77, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.493/201.88, Was #14
6:29 PM The Michigan crowd appreciates Pro Mod, greeting the first pair with a big cheer. The drivers responded by giving them a good show, both drivers stepping up from their first run today.
Left Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 8.538/109.22, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.282/223.14, Was #1
Right Lane: Ed Wasserbeck No Time, Now #26
                                  No Prior Run
Wasserbeck was shut off on his first attempt. He suffered the same fate here, leaving a thin trail of oil at the end of his burnout. Jenkins launched, took a good look at the left guard rail, and shut it off.
Left Lane: Ron Kammes No Time, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.647/216.93, Was #17
Right Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 6.299/225.22, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.296/224.06, Was #2
Kammes lost control on the burnout, wildly fishtailing, taking out the "A-board" between the starter and the Christmas tree and knocking the tree a foot or so out of position, one of the A-boards sailing into the right lane, bouncing off McAmis' windshield and air scoop. It took a tractor to push the tree and its heavy concrete base back into position. The damage to McAmis' car appeared to be minor and he remained in line to run once the track was put back together again. Needless to say, Kammes' was disqualified, so McAmis made a solo pass, smooth and straight, right down the groove to run his second 6.29 of the day.
Left Lane: Terry Housley Runs 6.567/214.52, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.624/211.53, Was #16
Right Lane: Michael Lockwood Runs 6.385/219.86, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.377/221.02, Was #10
Lockwood had a problem getting the carburetors cleared after the burnout, but the problem finally cleared (in a cloud of black smoke) and he staged the car. Both cars made good runs, Housley moving off the bump spot and Lockwood close to his earlier run.
Left Lane: Chris Cline Runs 11.904/87.95, Now #23
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Al Billes Runs 10.111/82.48, Now #21
Best prior run: 10.837/77.67, Was #21
Both shood hard, Cline immediately and Billes after 100 feet or so.
Left Lane: Steve Vick Runs 6.470/219.65, Now #16
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Kevin O'Dell Runs 6.386/220.12, Now #11
Best prior run: 11.386/74.04, Was #22
Vick had a broken nitrous hose in the first round, O'Dell shook very hard. Vick gets in, on the bubble, and O'Dell gets in much closer to the middle of the field. Vick's car was trying to go to the centerline and he did a good job of keeping it close to the groove.
Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 14.330/59.39, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.347/219.51, Was #6
Right Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.318/223.80, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.335/222.47, Was #5
castellana once again gets very sideways on the launch and has to shut it dow n. Stott throws down the gauntlet by stepping up in a round when very few of the top performers were able to do so.
Left Lane: Sal Passarelli Runs 6.384/223.69, Now #11
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 6.367/223.84, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.361/224.28, Was #8
Passarelli got the cleanly off the launch pad and made a good pass to get into the field, bumping Steve Vick. Stott runs his second 6.36 of the day, good consistency under different conditions.
Left Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.337/223.28, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.722/161.63, Was #21
Right Lane: Scott Ray Runs 8.991/99.95, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.602/211.66, Was #19
Ray's car was out of shape, puffing lots of smoke when Ray pedaled it, and he shut it off. Hoover made a nice, smooth pass to get in and bump Steve Cossis from the field.
Left Lane: Todd Howard Runs 7.630/131.24, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.401/219.86, Was #14
Right Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.285/226.13, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.372/222.62, Was #10
Pittman got a clean launch and flirted with the right edge of the groove for the first 300 feet, driving through shake to move way up the ladder. Howard shut it down just past half track.
Left Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 6.315/218.16, Now #5
Best prior run: 7.011/130.61, Was #22
Right Lane: Carl Moyer Runs 12.085/69.50, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.426/219.65, Was #16
Moyer's car got out of shape and he was looking at the guard rail over the hood, so he shut it down. Hahn got off the pad cleanly and was in the groove for most of the run to bump Moyer from the field.
Left Lane: Paul Athey Runs 6.445/218.05, Now #19
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Harold Martin Runs 6.406/214.11, Now #16
Best prior run: 7.391/138.80, Was #23
Athey left first, but it was martin with the performance to get into the field. Athey made a clean, straight run, but needs more ponies. Martin bumped Chip King from the field, replacing him on the bubble.
Left Lane: Chip King Runs 6.507/219.33, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.415/218.94, Was #17
Right Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 6.468/217.53, Now #21
                                  No Prior Run
King was unable to return the favor, his run soft from the start with a 1.168 60-foot time.
Left Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.435/222.47, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.319/223.50, Was #7

Best prior run: 6.314/226.92, Was #4
Another fine run for Janis, running away from Hood on the top end to take over the top spot and close the round.

Once again the Mohegan Sun Mercury is running out of qualifying rounds, while Martin was just bumped. Athey moves up to the first alternate spot on a good-looking run, while Martin struggled and threw in the towel just past half track.
Left Lane: Steve Vick Runs 6.382/221.42, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.470/219.65, Was #22

Both drivers step up, bumping Howard and Kevin O'Dell. Now it's Sal passarelli on the bubble at 6.384.
Left Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.359/222.36, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.337/223.28, Was #8

Best prior run: 6.361/224.28, Was #11
Two clean runs, Stott falling off a tenth from his earlier pace after running back-to-back 6.36s yesterday.
Left Lane: Terry Housley Runs 6.533/216.24, Now #23
Best prior run: 6.567/214.52, Was #23
Right Lane: Scott Ray Runs 6.793/201.25, Now #24
Best prior run: 6.602/211.66, Was #24
There were several puffs of vapor from under Ray's car during his run and he lost ground to the field.
Left Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 6.419/222.77, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.315/218.16, Was #5

Stott shook and chattered the tires, then shut it down. Hahn's pass looked pretty good, but lost a tenth somewhere along the way.
Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 10.010/74.30, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.347/219.51, Was #9
Right Lane: Kevin O'Dell Runs 6.417/217.84, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.386/220.12, Was #17
Castellana had problems at half track, with several flashes of flame from under the car as he shut it down. O'Dell made a good pass, coming up just short.
Left Lane: Todd Howard Runs 6.428/219.19, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.401/219.86, Was #18
Right Lane: Chris Cline Runs 10.976/120.68, Now #27
                                  No Prior Run
Cline's car shook and then started "basketballing," the car bouncing down the track as the rear tires started acting like springs. Good pass by Howard, just not quick enough.
Left Lane: Dan Rowe Runs 6.426/219.04, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.351/219.40, Was #10
Right Lane: Al Billes Runs 6.318/221.92, Now #7
Best prior run: 10.837/77.67, Was #26
Billes had problems getting the car off the launch pad cleanly yesterday, but here the car left straight and went right down the groove to bump Passarelli. Rowe made a good run., but failed to improve.
Left Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 10.113/72.99, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.282/223.14, Was #2
Right Lane: Ed Wasserbeck Runs 6.766/208.30, Now #27
                                  No Prior Run
Jenkins' car got out of the groove, to the right, and shut it down. Wasserbeck did the same, except he didn't lift and almost collected the wall.
Left Lane: Ron Kammes Runs 6.552/213.00, Now #25
Best prior run: 6.647/216.93, Was #26
Right Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 9.504/89.98, Now #23
Best prior run: 6.452/217.77, Was #23
Kammes delayed his burnout until he was almost at the tree, obviously not wanting to repeat his embarrassing incident from yesterday. He made a good, straight run, just not quick enough. Cossis' car shook and headed for the centerline.
Left Lane: Sal Passarelli Runs 6.518/188.86, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.384/223.69, Was #17
Right Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 14.361/79.63, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.285/226.13, Was #3
These two gave the crowd a show with side-by-side burnouts to half track. Pittman launched into shake and gave it up quickly, already near the top of the field. Passarelli ran it all the way through the lights, with a big explosion as he neared the finish line, the hood sailing through the air. Passarelli's car continued into the shutdown area with no chutes. The car hit the concrete wall half way down the shutdown area and these was a big flash of flame, the car continuing along the wall and off the end of the track, going a long way into the potato field at the end of the track. From the top end we get the report that Passarelli is conscious and talking with the safety personnel. He suffered some burns to his hands, arms, and feet in the accident, but is otherwise uninjured. He was airlifted to a hospital for treatment of his burns.
Right Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 6.394/222.88, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.296/224.06, Was #4
After a lengthy delay while rescue personnel tended to Passarelli and removed his car from the 'tater patch," racing resumed. McAmis' car was slow off the starting line with a lot of tire spin, then came on strong the rest of the way.
Right Lane: Michael Lockwood Runs 6.400/219.54, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.377/221.02, Was #15
Lockwood did a good job of driving here, the car veering to the left and very close to the centerline, Lockwood smoothly bringing it back without lifting or getting out of shape.

Left Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 6.284/219.01, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.296/224.06, Was #4

Jenkins' car was bound and determined to cross the centerline, carrying the front wheels way down the track before he had to back off to stay in his own lane. Great pass by McAmis to move one rung up the ladder.
Left Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 6.457/216.97, Now #23
Best prior run: 6.452/217.77, Was #23

Rowe spun and chattered the tires hard on the launch and had to back off early in the run. Cossis shook further down the track, pedaling at least twice and failing to improve.
Left Lane: Ed Wasserbeck Runs 6.709/211.53, Now #27
Best prior run: 6.766/208.30, Was #27

Housley's headers showed a flash of flame about 100 feet out as he shut it off. Wasserbeck got it down the track, but way off the competitive pace.
Left Lane: Al Billes Runs 12.520/71.04, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.318/221.92, Was #7
Right Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.307/223.25, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.337/223.28, Was #9
Billes spun the tires hard about 100 feet out and called it quits. Hoover fired a nice shot, smooth and straight, to move into the top half of the field.
Left Lane: Kevin O'Dell Runs 6.465/213.40, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.386/220.12, Was #18
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 8.936/92.49, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.347/219.51, Was #10
Castellana shut it off near half track. O'Dell encountered shake about 300 feet out and that hurt his chances.
Left Lane: Chris Cline No Time, Now #28
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Steve Vick Runs 6.351/220.62, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.382/221.42, Was #16
Cline broke on the launch, coasting to a stop at the 330-foot marker. Vick made a nice run, the car hiking the left front wheel in the air with every gear change, to improve and move off the bump spot. Now it's Michael Lockwood who has to sweat it out because he's on the bubble at 6.377 and has already made his final qualifying run.
Left Lane: Carl Moyer Runs 12.000/67.39, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.364/220.26, Was #14
Right Lane: Chip King Runs 6.362/220.48, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.415/218.94, Was #22
King was a real threat to bump Lockwood and he lived up to expectations, making a smooth, straight to get in a few spots above the bump spot. Now it's Thomas Patterson who has to sweat it out, Patterson yet to run.
Left Lane: Scott Ray Runs 6.454/212.03, Now #24
Best prior run: 6.602/211.66, Was #26
Right Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.324/223.43, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.319/223.50, Was #9
Ray's EFI combination is unique and he's still trying to get it to run competitive numbers. He ran a career-best ET here, but still came up short. Hood came within a few thousandths of his best.
Left Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 6.407/222.07, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.361/224.28, Was #13
Right Lane: Todd Howard Runs 6.419/220.22, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.401/219.86, Was #20
No help here, both drivers already having better runs on the books.
Left Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.321/221.92, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.318/223.80, Was #7
Right Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 6.315/223.43, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.315/218.16, Was #6
The top two cars from 2000 paired up here, the top nitrous car versus the top blower car. Hahn's car made a bit of a sideways move on the launch, then went straight down the groove. Stott also went right down the fat part of the track, putting on a good show for the standing-room-only crowd.
Left Lane: Harold Martin Runs 6.405/219.94, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.406/214.11, Was #22
Right Lane: Paul Athey No Time, Now #22
Best prior run: 6.405/218.27, Was #21
The "Mohegan Sun" Mercury was still in the staging lanes, not able to fire. Martin's car is also an EFI combination, different from Ray's and in a much higher state of development. Martin comes close, but can't run the number and will be a spectator tomorrow.
Left Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 10.881/95.32, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.285/226.13, Was #4
Pittman launched hard and his car made a violent twitch when the power suddenly went away about 200 feet out.
Left Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.282/225.11, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.279/228.42, Was #1
janis made a nice run, but failed to improve, coming up just 0.003 seconds short of his earlier, best run.
Left Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 6.445/216.31, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.371/216.45, Was #16
Bubble-sitter Patterson was the final car of the round and his attempt to avoid running the #1 qualifier in round one came up well short. The run was clean and straight, just not quick enough.
