Farmington, NC - There's a definite crossover
between bracket racers and the tough competitors chasing the Holley
Sportsman Championship Series, as evidenced clearly by the results of the
event this weekend at Farmington Dragway.
 Myron
Piatek took his second consecutive Earl's Stock title of 2001 (not to
mention his second straight win at the Farmington HSC!), joining a
surprisingly growing list of drivers with multiple final round appearances
early in the 2001 season. Piatek measures up to his DRUSA Footbrake
AllStars Championship with consistently deadly reaction times garnered
through years of bracket racing, where he has captured 14 track
championships, as well as a win and a runner-up in Bracket Finals
competition, dating back to 1980.
 Although
he's a young face in the crowd, Andy Beal has been knocking down rounds
like a veteran. Beal had an impressive late-round finish at the 2000
IHRA Div. 1 Summit Bracket Finals, which was just the first clue that it
wouldn't be long before he collected a major win. He's on the radar
screen early with his Annihilator Top Dragster victory at the Division 1
Raiders season opener.
 Widely
acclaimed footbraker Richard Alford, Jr. expanded his arsenal in the last
few years, spreading his special brand of misery to the electronics crowd
as well. It's painfully obvious to his competition that Alford is
plenty comfortable in his Dominator Quick Rod dragster with a
"four-oh and dead-on" pass in the finals that left little on the
table for his opponent. Alford is a former Bracket Finals champion,
and probably ranks among the winningest footbrakers in the country.
 Lest
we forget the defending double-champion, Anthony
Bertozzi, he put an
exclamation point on the Farmington race by advancing to the finals in
both Super Stock and Modified. Although he fell to Mark Moreland in
Hooker Modified, he posted a tough dead-on pass in the Lunati Super Stock
final to capture his first IHRA win of the season.
 The
Hot Rod final struck a chord of deja vu, but it wasn't quite what it
appeared. Although the same cars had met in the Weiand Hot Rod final
just last week at the make-up event at Carolina Dragway, the drivers and
results were different. Donald Webb won his second of three final
round appearances in 2001, defeating Jason Crowl who was back behind the
wheel of his car after lending it to a victorious Danny Sinclair at
Carolina.
Steve Splawn won NOS Top Sportsman over Stevie Sechler
after a pair of great "five-oh" reaction times when Sechler
broke out by thirteen thousandths of a second.
Bobby Jernigan took a double-breakout decision over Billy
Blackman for the Holley Team G Super Rod title.
