EPPING, N.H. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the 6th annual Amalie Oil North American Nationals Ethanol Performs listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Louie Allison Runs 10.924/79.25, Now #2
Right Lane: Jim Bailey Runs 4.865/268.65, Now #1
7:32 PM Bailey's car is sporting associate sponsorship from Alamo City Harley-Davidson. His car was on a very good run to half track, then it looked like he pushed out a head gasket, the header flames very green on the right side, and the flames went out before he got to the line. Allison launched, started to smoke the tires, and shut it down, leaving a small trail of oil on the first 100 feet of the lane.
Left Lane: Steve Smith Runs 10.419/79.12, Now #3
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.992/239.78, Now #2
Smith got a bit further than Allison before shutting off, the problem not evident from here. Head was on a good pass to about 1,000 feet, then the engine went away and the track crew checked the right lane in the finish line area. No oil...
Left Lane: Roger Dean No Time, Now #5
Right Lane: Bruce Litton No Time, Now #6
Both cars made their burnouts, then Dean staged and left before the tree, his car getting very close to the wall. The starter shut Litton off in order to clear Dean from the top end of the track, so Litton will be allowed to service the car and come back later.
Right Lane: Paul Romine Runs 4.728/312.78, Now #1
Nice, clean, straight, smooth. Pick your favorite adjective and apply it to this run, the header flames tall all the way through the lights.
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.711/309.56, Now #1
Millican had last-second problems at the head of the staging lanes, but the crew made quick repairs and fired the car. The car is sporting a new paint scheme, with accent splashes in addition to the blue paint on the sides and nose of the car. The car wasn't particularly quick off the line, but was clearly on the move on the top half of the run.
Left Lane: Bobby Lagana Jr Runs 15.402/76.41, Now #7
This weekend Lagana is in Grant Flowers' "Voodooist" dragster. The car left the line, but just barely, then the engine dropped to an idle and blubbered down the track.
Right Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 4.684/316.52, Now #1
8:51 PM Litton's team turned the car as quickly as they could, anxious to run before the track cooled down too much. The wait was worth it, taking the number one spot with an ET just a thousandth short and the speed just 0.45 mph short of Millican's track records. The run looked flawless, the header flames tall and white-orange all the way through the lights.

That's a wrap for the day...

Results for Qualifying 2

EPPING, N.H. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Fuel at the 6th annual Amalie Oil North American Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 13.394/47.15, Now #5
Best prior run: 4.992/239.78, Was #5
Right Lane: Jack Ostrander Runs 9.473/69.37, Now #6
No Prior Run
2:31 PM Problems in both lanes. Head's car smoked the tires and he shut it off. Ostrander's car also smoked the tires, then the right rear tire went flat. There is oil in the right lane, so Ostrander gets the "black flag."
Left Lane: Paul Romine Runs 8.959/81.18, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.728/312.78, Was #3
Right Lane: Bobby Lagana Jr Runs 5.823/254.38, Now #6
Best prior run: 15.402/76.41, Was #9
Lagana went about 60 feet under power last night, Romine made a very good run. This time Romine overpowered the track about 300 feet out, up in smoke. Lagana's car was very soft off the line, with a 1.071 60-foot time, and labored down the track - but it made a full pass and didn't appear to hurt any parts, so they have something to tune from for tonight.
Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 14.467/68.01, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.711/309.56, Was #2
Right Lane: Louie Allison Runs 5.063/279.44, Now #6
Best prior run: 10.924/79.25, Was #9
Millican lost traction almost immediately. Allison had a safe launch, with a 0.901 60-foot time, and then went right down the groove on a clean run to get into the field, bumping Steve Smith.
Left Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 10.153/88.47, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.684/316.52, Was #1
Right Lane: Steve Smith Runs 10.717/65.43, Now #9
Best prior run: 10.419/79.12, Was #9
Both cars lost traction, Litton shutting it down and coasting while Smith pedaled it. The pedal job cost him, fireballing the engine in a cloud of red-brown smoke from partially-burned nitromethane. He rolled through the shutdown area, the engine on fire, until he reached the safety crew at the top end. The track is clean, no oil.
Right Lane: Roger Dean Runs 5.173/286.32, Now #7
No Prior Run
Dean had problems staging the car last night and tried to drive out the other end to let Bruce Litton make his pass, but came up short and Litton had to shut down and come back later in the evening. Dean made a clean, straight run to get into the field - for now, anyway.

Saturday

Results for Qualifying 3

EPPING, N.H. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Fuel at the 6th annual Amalie Oil North American Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Steve Smith Runs 5.311/272.28, Now #8
Best prior run: 10.419/79.12, Was #10
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.614/323.58, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.711/309.56, Was #2
9:05 PM Wow! Millican streaked away from Smith like Smith was chained to the starting line. That's the quickest pass in IHRA history and Millican will have to run a 4.660 or better to back it up as an IHRA record. Needless to say, it sets both ends of the track record. Meanwhile, Smith squeaked in, bumping Bobby Lagana, Jr.
Left Lane: Jack Ostrander Runs 6.328/137.54, Now #10
Best prior run: 9.473/69.37, Was #10
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 5.203/199.79, Now #5
Best prior run: 4.992/239.78, Was #5
Both cars had short fuses here, Ostrander up in smoke and Head losing a blower belt on the top end. Ostrander's weekend comes to an end tonight and Head will have to battle back from the bottom half of the ladder.
Left Lane: Roger Dean Runs 5.499/196.04, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.173/286.32, Was #7
Right Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 4.714/313.80, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.684/316.52, Was #2
Millican really raised the bar with his run, making Litton's chances of moving up the ladder very slim. Litton gave it a shot, but came up a tenth of a second short on an otherwise good run, once again under full power all the way to the line. Dean fell behind early and then the header flames went out around half track, the reason not evident.
Right Lane: Paul Romine Runs 4.638/318.32, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.728/312.78, Was #3
Lagana is not in line, so the field is set. Romine shows Millican he also knows how to get down the track on an excellent pass to move around Litton on the ladder.

Elimination Round 1

EPPING, N.H. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Top Fuel
at the 6th annual Amalie Oil North American Nationals:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Jim Bailey (Snap-On Racing Dragster) 0.626 4.871 280.72
 (L) Jim Head (Dragster) 0.511 5.554 184.19
12:49 PM There was a loud POP from Bailey's car when they tried to start it, but the crew backed it down and tried again with more success. Head left way ahead and was leading handily to almost half track, then his rear tires disappeared in a dense cloud of smoke, losing traction completely. Bailey went by on a clean run to take the win light by a big margin.
 (W) Louie Allison (Vista Foods Dragster) 0.486 4.886 291.63
 (L) Bruce Litton (WIX Filters Dragster) 0.521 5.134 266.53
Allison only made two passes in qualifying, Litton got down the track with strong runs on all three. So much for prior form - Litton trailed all the way to half track and then fell further behind when his tires started trailing smoke as he lost traction. Two pairs, two upsets. Oops, Bailey qualified ahead of Head, so technically that wasn't an upset.
 (W) Roger Dean (Rupert Oil Dragster) 0.679 5.202 282.42
 (L) Paul Romine (CARQUEST Auto Parts Dragster) 0.513 6.017 189.44
Upset City!! Romine was way ahead, then started smoking the tires and pedaling. Meanwhile, Dean was dead-late, but went right down the groove for the win. Dean faces Allison next round, Allison with lane choice.
 (W) Clay Millican (Werner Dragster) 0.519 5.313 186.25
 (L) Steve Smith (Smith Trailers Dragster) 0.510 5.470 222.18
This was almost the fourth upset of the round, Millican out to a big lead and then coasting, the blower belt sailing through the air. However, as Smith closed the gap, his blower belt, too, went sailing through the air and Millican's early lead got him the win light, Smith closing fast at the end. Millican faces Bailey next round, Bailey with lane choice.

Sunday

Elimination Round 2

EPPING, N.H. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Top Fuel
at the 6th annual Amalie Oil North American Nationals:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Louie Allison (Vista Foods Dragster) 0.505 4.851 307.65
 (L) Roger Dean (Rupert Oil Dragster) 0.554 5.270 272.89
3:13 PM Two unexpected first-round survivors squared off here and Allison dominated, his car smoothly down the groove for a career-best speed and a berth in the final round.
 (W) Clay Millican (Werner Dragster) 0.523 4.745 305.56
 (L) Jim Bailey (Snap-On Racing Dragster) 0.473 8.183 91.19
Bailey won in Canada by running his own game and he left hard here, but the blower belt went sailing through the air about 200 feet out and he slowed, raw fuel from all eight pipes. Millican and crew chief Mike Kloeber made no mistakes, the car smoothly down the track with no trace of tire smoke anywhere in the run. Millican has lane choice against Allison in the finals.

Sunday

Finals

EPPING, N.H. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 3 eliminations in
Top Fuel at the 6th annual Amalie Oil North American Nationals:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Clay Millican (Werner Dragster) 0.480 4.751 314.75
 (L) Louie Allison (Vista Foods Dragster) 0.519 4.971 301.47
5:23 PM And then there was one - final round, that is. Allison's car hurt the engine last round and they had to make a complete engine change between rounds, members of Bruce Litton's crew chipping in to help the Ostrander team to make the change in time to run here. It was an uphill battle and Allison made a good race of it, the hastily repaired car right there should Millican falter. But Millican didn't falter, his car ran straight and true, right down the groove with no tire smoke for his fifth consecutive win, matching a record set by Don Garlits in 1975 and extending his lead in the championship points.
