Nitro Harley at the 6th annual Amalie Oil North American Nationals Ethanol

Left Lane: Tony Mattioli Runs 6.588/211.39, Now #2
Right Lane: Steve Stordeur Runs 6.478/201.07, Now #1
Two good runs to open the show for the two-wheel set, both solidly down the
groove and on the power at the finish line. Stordeur blows the track ET record
away on a nice opening effort.
Left Lane: Ray Price Runs 10.500/88.07, Now #4
Right Lane: Jay Turner Runs 6.631/206.86, Now #3
Price appeared to have a good launch, but then the front wheel came down and
he cruised through. Turner's bike started to smoke the tire about 300 feet out and
he controlled it well, saving the run.
Left Lane: Johnny Mancuso Runs 6.691/203.86, Now #4
Right Lane: Stan Verheijen Runs 6.875/171.62, Now #5
Verheijen quickly lost ground to Mancuso this time out.
Left Lane: Doug Vancil Runs 6.545/218.69, Now #2
Right Lane: Jack Romine Runs 6.776/198.23, Now #6
Romine was battling to keep his bike going straight early in the run, but
there was nothing visiblky wropng with Vancil's run, clean and straight, setting a
track speed record.

Right Lane: Mike Romine Runs 6.665/193.24, Now #5
Last pair. Both made good runs, but left a lot on the table judging from
their speeds.

Both lose a little ground to their first run, Mattioli very close to the

1:34 PM Furr had the front wheel back down very early in the run, not a good
sign. Verheijen made a very nice pass to bump Furr and move the bump time into the
sixties.

Nice pass for Mancuso, smoothly down the groove, carrying the font wheel a
long way down the track. Romine was struggling with the bike early in the run and
will have one last shot at the field this evening.

The top two in points squared off here. Vancil got the win light, Stordeur
the better ET, neither improving over their previous best.

Very nice pass by Mattioli, resetting the track speed record and just 0.002
seconds behind the quickest run of the meet. Nice pass by Turner, very
consistent.

"The Old Man" cut a 0.449 light and made another very good run, but stayed in
third spot on the ladder. Romine stepped up a bit, but fell off the pace on the
top end, staying in seventh spot in the order.

12:06 PM Stordeur trails Doug Vancil by 39 points for the championship and
this loss hurts his title hopes. He was well ahead at half track, but then slowed
and and his bike veered to the left, brushing the wall. Verheijen went by to win
by a margin of victory = 0.178 seconds (approximately 32 feet). The word from the
top end is that Stordeur is okay. Since the contact was after the finish line, the
run stands. Early reports from the top end were confusing, leading to an erroneous
report that it was Verheijen who brushed the wall.

Vancil extends his points lead, leaving first and never headed. Margin of

Romine cut a solid light, but then smoked the tire and Mattioli went by like
a rocket to win easily.

Price lit the red bulb. Then Turner made a good pass - just not good enough

3:07 PM Verheijen upset Vancil's closest pursuer in the championship battle
in the first round, so you know Steve Stordeur was cheering for Verheijen here. It
didn't work and Vancil extends his lead on another strong pass, Verheijen getting
very close to the centerline and forced to shut it down.

Turner got the holeshot and then held Mattioli at bay to the 1,000-foot mark,

5:11 PM Vancil wins with style, a good light and another strong run. Turner
made a race of it with a better reaction time, but didn't have enough to hold him
off on the top end. Margin of victory = 0.128 seconds (approximately 37
feet).
