cloud cover, and high pressure. Leggett gets the new Mustang cleanly down the left
side, but Paone's car was slow off the starting line (1.068 60-foot time).
Left Lane: John Konigshofer Runs 6.663/210.57, Now #1
Right Lane: Tony Fox Runs 9.679/80.90, Now #4

Left Lane: Carl Baker Runs 6.714/210.73, Now #7
Right Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.636/209.62, Now #1
Baker made a good opening pass, but Wilson shows the power to continue his
early-season hot streak by steadily pulling away from Baker.
Left Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.695/208.39, Now #3
Right Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 6.743/207.21, Now #11

it eighteen cars down the track, with a soft bump spot.
Right Lane: Tim Nabors Runs 6.643/209.26, Now #2
Last car...Nabors takes the brand new Cavalier to the number two spot, so it
looks like no "new car blues" for him.

LEICESTER, N.Y. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Sunoco
Race Fuels Pro Stock at the 11th annual CARQUEST Empire Nationals listing lane,
driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run,
best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Carl Baker Runs 6.639/211.16, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.633/211.06, Was #2
Right Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 6.691/206.39, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.662/208.33, Was #5
7:13 PM We open the final qualifying session with a classic battle, Mercury
versus Chevy. Baker has struggled a bit with the new car this year, but he appears
to have it fully sorted out here after resetting the track speed record twice so
far. Montecalvo got the win light with a better reaction time, but Baker showed
solid consistency with yet another 211 mph blast.
Left Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.662/208.75, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.670/208.52, Was #6
Right Lane: Tony Fox Runs 6.765/208.10, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.702/207.78, Was #9
These two were already safely in the field, but that didn't stop Miller from
stepping up with a quick 1.01 60-foot time and a string-straight run.
Left Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.784/207.82, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.710/207.56, Was #11
Right Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 6.744/206.70, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.727/206.39, Was #13
No help for either driver here, but Rice cut a 0.406 light and could use
that again tomorrow to turn the holeshot trick.
Left Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.672/208.23, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.689/207.98, Was #7
Right Lane: Tim Nabors Runs 6.646/208.33, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.636/208.68, Was #3
Nabors looks very strong this weekend, with runs of 6.64, 6.66, 6.63, and
this 6.64. Gahm steps up slightly, but not enough to move up the ladder.
Left Lane: Angelo Alesci Runs 6.755/205.51, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.707/208.01, Was #10
Right Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.614/210.28, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.614/210.05, Was #1
Wilson continues to dominate the elapsed time battle with another 6.614, his
second of the weekend, with a better speed to go with it.
Left Lane: John Bartunek Runs 6.692/206.80, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.774/205.07, Was #17
Right Lane: Anthony Paone Runs 6.783/203.12, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.776/203.95, Was #18
These two were shooting at Chuck Demory's 6.773 to get into the field.
Bartunek finally got his car to go straight down the track and the New Yorker moved
into the top half of the field, bumping Demory. Now the bump spot is Bob Holzer's
6.733.
Left Lane: Terry Leggett Runs 6.670/207.98, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.701/207.02, Was #9
Right Lane: Chuck Demory Runs 6.793/205.57, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.773/204.51, Was #17
Leggett was just nudged out of the top half of the field and Demory was
bumped out. Leggett made his best pass of the weekend to move back into the top
half of the field, but Demory was unable to run the number and will be a spectator
unless somebody breaks and cannot ,make the first-round call.
Left Lane: Richard Penland Runs 6.776/206.16, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.788/204.91, Was #19
Right Lane: Elijah Morton Runs 6.773/206.54, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.729/207.43, Was #15
A pair of 6.77s, but Morton was already in, Penland was not.
Left Lane: Bob Holzer No Time, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.733/206.67, Was #16
Right Lane: Jason Collins Runs 6.721/207.69, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.718/207.72, Was #13
Holzer launched and broke, leaving a trail of liquid (oil or transmission
fluid) to where he stopped near the 330-foot point. He will stay on the bump spot
and will face Wilson in the first round - unless John Konigshofer mages to unseat
Wilson.
Left Lane: John Konigshofer Runs 6.656/210.47, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.654/210.64, Was #4
After the PTS crew cleaned and groomed the lane, Konigshofer closed out Pro
Stock qualifying with a run close to his best, but not good enough to move him up
the ladder.
That's it, the field is set with Wilson on the pole at a track
record 6.614 seconds, facing Holzer in the first round, the field anchored by
Holzer's 6.733.

11:38 AM Bartunek has parked the Pro Mod car and figured this event in his

qualifying in the top half of the field and won "Best Appearing Pro Car." He'll
have to make do with those honors, his car shaking hard on the launch. Gahm made a
clean launch and run for an easy win.

(W) Jason Collins ('97 Ford Probe) 0.464 7.180 162.76
(L) John Konigshofer ('98 Ford Probe) 0.499 10.943 123.92
Konigshofer shook hard and skated toward the wall, then shut it down.
(W) Tim Nabors ('01 Chevy Cavalier) 0.483 6.673 208.30
(L) Chris Holbrook (Luckett-Bohanan '01 Ford Mus0.392(R) 6.760 206.23
Holbrook hands this one to Nabors, but his new Cavalier probably would have
prevailed anyway with the best run of the round so far.
(W) Carl Baker ('01 Mercury Cougar) 0.494 6.651 210.73
(L) Elijah Morton ('99 Ford Probe) 0.267(R) 6.725 209.85
Morton took a shot at the tree and missed. Baker made a very good run, low
ET and top speed of the day so far.
(W) Gene Wilson (Don Smith '00 Mercury Cougar) 0.453 6.627 209.79
(L) Chuck Demory ('98 Ford Probe) 0.492 6.779 205.13
Wilson only has one round loss so far this year and if he keeps driving like
this he won't get another one today. Demory ran true to form, but so did Wilson
and it wasn't even close.
In the second round Wilson has lane choice over Gahm, Miller over Collins,
Baker over Leggett, and Nabors over Montecalvo.

Final Round
LEICESTER, N.Y. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4 eliminations in
Sunoco Race Fuels Pro Stock at the 11th annual CARQUEST Empire Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Gene Wilson (Don Smith '00 Mercury Cougar) 0.441 6.654 209.14
(L) Tim Nabors ('01 Chevy Cavalier) 0.479 6.670 207.94
5:15 PM This is a great matchup, Wilson dominating the category all year and
Nabors with a strong performance all weekend from his new Cavalier. Nabors did a
good job and made it close, but Wilson once again had the better light and the
better run, a sure recipe for a win light. Wilson wins his fourth event of the
year and he still has just one round loss for the season.
