time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed
time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 6.193/235.68, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.157/234.94, Was #10
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.909/239.57, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.850/240.34, Was #2

Best prior run: 6.077/226.85, Was #6
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 5.950/236.05, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.968/238.05, Was #5
Cannister dodged the guard rail in the first session, Rector shook and
pedaled, so both were looking for much better numbers this time around. She did,
he didn't. Laurie leapfrogged over Rector in the order, also bettering John
Vouros' first-run result.
Left Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 8.768/94.91, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.128/232.11, Was #7
Right Lane: Paul Noakes No Time, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.515/209.56, Was #14
There is no official bump spot yet because sixteenth through 22nd spots in
the order bypassed the scales in round one and their runs were disqualified.
Both drivers had problems here, Noakes rolling the starting beams and
getting no time, Atchison severely out of shape shortly after the launch and
electing to give it up.
Left Lane: Paul Lee Runs 17.833/60.89, Now #17
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Terry Munroe Runs 6.110/230.02, Now #7
No Prior Run
Lee shook and danced on the launch, shaking very hard, and gave it up.
Munroe got the car down the lane this round and moved into the top half of that
field, the bump spot now officially set as Joe Comella's 12.500.
Left Lane: Mike Etter No Time, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.362/228.07, Was #13
Right Lane: Dale Brand Runs 5.907/238.55, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.849/239.02, Was #1
Etter's car shook and turned left immediately, then coasted to a stop about
400 feet out. Brand made a good pass to 1,000 feet and then there was a trail of
blue smoke from under the car. The PTS crew went to work on the left-lane launch
pad, so it appears Etter's launch problems were due to oil under his tires. The
cause? They also cleaned up a connecting rod or two.
Left Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 8.774/95.46, Now #17
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Philip Hooper Runs 6.246/228.19, Now #13
No Prior Run
Now we're starting to get serious, Hooper bumping into the field and moving
the bump spot to Noakes' 6.515. Dobbs' car shook and wasn't making much progress
when he gave it up around half track.
Left Lane: Vincent Rastelli Runs 6.527/224.17, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.466/211.59, Was #15
Right Lane: Joe Comella Runs 6.169/231.12, Now #12
Best prior run: 12.500/87.94, Was #18
Comella bumped Noakes and pushed Rastelli down to the bump spot. Rastelli
shook and pedaled early in his run, killing his ET.
Left Lane: John Vouros Runs 7.004/137.16, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.898/236.01, Was #4
Right Lane: Monty Todd Runs 6.796/146.69, Now #18

We have several right lane singles to close the round. Midyette makes a
consistent run, just 0.002 seconds slower than his first pass.

No Prior Run
Van Hauen didn't even make an attempt in the first round. He went right down
the groove to bump Rastelli out, putting Etter on the bump at 6.362.
Right Lane: Russell Mudd Runs 10.851/87.42, Now #21
No Prior Run
Mudd's car danced and shook on the launch and he gave it up early.

Best prior run: 6.110/230.02, Was #13
Right Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 5.901/238.47, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.886/239.10, Was #4
These two met several times in the Pro Outlaw series and Cannister got the
better of it on most of those occasions. She does so once again, but both drivers
failed to improve and if there are no more changes in the ladder will meet again in
the first round on Sunday.
Left Lane: Philip Hooper Runs 6.118/230.84, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.246/228.19, Was #18

Right Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.834/237.25, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.868/236.71, Was #3
Van Hauen gets sent back to Iowa early. Vouros makes a very pretty run to
move right in behind Brand on the ladder, pushing Thomas down to the third
spot.
Left Lane: Russell Mudd Runs 9.620/65.41, Now #24
Best prior run: 10.851/87.42, Was #23
Right Lane: Chris Foster Runs 6.150/225.45, Now #17

6.140? Mudd launched, shook, and shut it off. Foster made a great effort,
coming up just a hundredth short of the bump time.
Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.013/233.40, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.918/235.64, Was #5
Two left lane single are all that remain in the lanes. Both are already in,
so all they can hope to do is move up the ladder. Or check their tuneup for
tomorrow.
Left Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 5.933/237.42, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.938/237.00, Was #6
Rector has been extremely consistent here, three runs between 5.968 and
5.938, each of the last two just a little quicker than the one before it. His
final pass follows that pattern, just a little quicker than his third run, ready to
go bracket racing tomorrow.

Eliminations Round 1
LEICESTER, N.Y. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Funny
Car at the 11th annual CARQUEST Empire Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding '01 Pontiac Fire0.478 5.961 231.75
(L) Dave Ray (Butler Steel Bldgs '96 Oldsmobile 0.000(R) (Broke)
12:02 PM Usually the #1 qualifier chooses to run later in the round, but
Brand is confident enough to run first and get more turnaround time because his
opponent is a no-show. He makes a relatively soft pass, possibly wanting to get a
baseline on today's hotter, more humid track conditions.
(W) Laurie Cannister (Girl Power '99 Chevy Camar0.517 5.903 239.91
(L) Paul Lee (Movies Exchange '01 Chevy Corvette0.446 6.196 227.69
Lee, in as the third alternate for Terry Munroe, did all he could with a
great light, driving through shake for his best lap of the weekend, but Cannister's
"Girl Power" was just too much for him.
(W) Dan Roman (Absolute Pleasure '99 Pontiac Fir0.516 6.154 227.19
(L) John Vouros ('00 Pontiac Firebird) 0.460 9.264 77.17
They don't race on paper - Roman didn't stand a chance against Vouros based
on qualifying, but he staged the car and ran his race. Surprise! Vouros shook,
got over near the wall, pedaled it, and then kissed the wall, DQ'ing the run.
(W) Mark Thomas (Ethanol Performs '01 Dodge Aven0.484 5.925 240.25
(L) Paul Noakes ('98 Ford Mustang) 0.477 8.644 106.14
This one went according to form, Noakes in as first alternate for Hooper and
falling victim to severe tire shake and chatter while Thomas went right down the
groove..
(W) Terry McMillen (Amalie Oil '98 Dodge Avenger0.516 6.018 236.46
(L) Ronnie Midyette ('94 Pontiac TransAm) 0.529 6.721 158.00
Midyette slowed at half track, allowing McMillen to win easily, but McMillen
paid a price with a big cloud of aluminum smoke in the shutdown area. McMillen
loses lane choice to Cannister in round two.
(W) Jimmy Rector ('01 Chevy Camaro) 0.504 5.963 237.21
(L) Joe Comella ('98 Pontiac Firebird) 0.586 6.305 226.96
rector caught Comella napping and then put his bracket racer on cruise
control for an easy win, losing lane choice to Thomas in round two.
(W) Larry Dobbs ('01 Chevy Corvette) 0.556 5.991 232.75
(L) Fred Tigges ('97 Chevy Camaro) 0.479 17.877 45.06
Tigges got a huge holeshot, followed by huge tire shake and smoke. Dobbs
made a clean run for the win and lane choice against Roman in round two.
(W) Rob Atchison ('98 Pontiac Firebird) 0.505 5.962 236.75
(L) Monty Todd ('01 Chevy Camaro) 0.479 6.003 233.52
On paper this was the closest matchup of the first round and that's just the
way it played out, Todd with the holeshot and Atchison playing catch-up all the way
down the track, catching him at the 1,000-foot marker and winning by a margin of
victory = 0.015 seconds (approximately 5 feet). Atchison faces Brand in round two
and lost lane choice to Brand by just 0.001 seconds, so that race should also be a
close one.

Eliminations Round 2
LEICESTER, N.Y. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Funny
Car at the 11th annual CARQUEST Empire Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding '01 Pontiac Fire0.479 5.937 237.55
(L) Rob Atchison ('98 Pontiac Firebird) 0.512 6.073 235.19
1:56 PM Brand chose the left lane and made it look easy, with a puff of
smoke in the shutdown area.
(W) Laurie Cannister (Girl Power '99 Chevy Camar0.558 5.903 239.19
(L) Terry McMillen (Amalie Oil '98 Dodge Avenger0.477 6.073 233.08
McMillen's car was blowing oil smoke from a left-side header on the burnout
and prior to the launch, but it cleaned up when he launched. McMillen got a big
advantage off the line, but Cannister had the ponies to run him down and go by to
win by a margin of victory = 0.089 seconds (approximately 30 feet), also earning
lane choice against Brand in the semifinals.
(W) Mark Thomas (Ethanol Performs '01 Dodge Aven0.508 5.934 239.23
(L) Jimmy Rector ('01 Chevy Camaro) 0.487 6.069 210.77
Rector got the holeshot and led well past half track, but his engine erupted
in smoke around the 1,000-foot marker and Thomas drove by for the win on the top
end.
(W) Larry Dobbs ('01 Chevy Corvette) 0.526 6.012 231.24
(L) Dan Roman (Absolute Pleasure '99 Pontiac Fir0.491 6.086 233.76
Rector's car dumped a ton of oil on the top end of the track, so these two
had plenty of time to think about their race. Roman took the early advantage, but
Dobbs erased that by the 60-foot mark and then steadily increased his lead. Margin
of victory = 0.039 seconds (approximately 13 feet). Dobbs faces Thomas in the
semifinals, Thomas with lane choice.

Eliminations Round 3
LEICESTER, N.Y. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3 eliminations in Funny
Car at the 11th annual CARQUEST Empire Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding '01 Pontiac Fire0.486 5.848 237.59
(L) Laurie Cannister (Girl Power '99 Chevy Camar0.506 6.383 228.73
3:46 PM Brand left first and Laurie started chasing him, but her car started
to shake and she had to pedal it, the car getting very close to the centerline.
(W) Larry Dobbs ('01 Chevy Corvette) 0.646 6.066 231.16
(L) Mark Thomas (Ethanol Performs '01 Dodge Aven0.817 6.121 202.64
Dobbs pre-staged and his stage bulb was blinking on and off before Thomas was
even pre-staged. That may have distracted both drivers because both were very late,
Dobbs getting a relatively large holeshot on a very slow reaction time! That
determined the race, Thomas throwing in the towel when Dobbs reached the finish
line. Brand will have lane choice against Dobbs in the finals.
Sunday
Final Round
LEICESTER, N.Y. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4 eliminations in
Funny Car at the 11th annual CARQUEST Empire Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding '01 Pontiac Fire0.474 5.928 221.31
(L) Larry Dobbs ('01 Chevy Corvette) 0.544 7.460 130.13
5:13 PM Dobbs pulled off a couple upsets to get here, but the final round was
all Brand. He nailed Brand to the tree and then Dobbs' engine went away. But
Brand's win wasn't without cost, his engine eating a lot of aluminum parts in the
lights.
