Results for Qualifying 1
GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Sunoco Race
Fuels Pro Stock at the Second annual Mopar Performance Parts Nationals presented by
Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order
following run:
Left Lane: Anthony Paone Runs 6.871/200.53, Now #2
Right Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.865/198.50, Now #1
6:27 PM We're a bit behind schedule, a brief rain delay and then a Top
Sportsman oildown moving this round back from a hoped-for 5:00 PM
start.
Gahm's car jumped to the left on the launch, lots of shake in both
lanes.
Left Lane: Jerry Yeoman Runs 10.428/73.18, Now #4
Right Lane: Tom Lee Runs 6.699/206.94, Now #1
Lee holds the track ET record at 6.625 and gets the first competitive pass of
the round. Yeoman shook and slowed early in his run.
Left Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 7.958/117.34, Now #5
Right Lane: Angelo Alesci Runs 6.753/205.71, Now #2
Wilson leads Lee in the championship points, but can't match Lee's pace here,
Wilson also experiencing early shake. Alesci made a nice, smooth, clean run.
Left Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 6.786/204.31, Now #4
Right Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.676/207.23, Now #1
Holbrook makes the best run so far in the left lane and Miller moves right to
the top of the heap on a very smooth-looking run. Miller had a 1.009 60-foot time,
by the way.
Left Lane: Chuck De Mory Runs 6.913/200.98, Now #8
Right Lane: Ed Machacek Runs 6.828/202.52, Now #5
Left Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.718/206.23, Now #3
Right Lane: John Konigshofer Runs 9.390/115.51, Now #11
Rice's new car isn't done, so he's still in the old, reliable Firebird. "Old
reliable" goes right down the groove, but Konigshofer's old, reliable Probe did a
dance on the launch and he shut it down.
Left Lane: Elijah Morton Runs 6.864/203.16, Now #8
Right Lane: Wally Stroupe Runs 6.822/203.06, Now #6
Morton's car went left, then right, out of the groove to half track.
Stroupe's pass was a lot straighter, but not much quicker.
Left Lane: Bob Holzer Runs 9.001/105.23, Now #14
Right Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 6.697/206.51, Now #2
Holzer's car was also very loose in the first part of the run and he elected
to give it up. Nice pass by Montecalvo, clean and straight.
Left Lane: Jason Collins Runs 14.719/54.98, Now #18
Right Lane: Carl Baker Runs 9.245/100.49, Now #15
Collins' car shook and he shut it down. Baker left hard, wheels up, and the
went to the left, near the centerline.
Left Lane: Richard Penland Runs 6.957/190.19, Now #13
Penland's car was also very loose over the first half of the run.

Results for Qualifying 2
GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Sunoco Race
Fuels Pro Stock at the Second annual Mopar Performance Parts Nationals presented by
Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in
order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to
run:
Left Lane: Carl Baker Runs 6.671/208.33, Now #1
Best prior run: 9.245/100.49, Was #16
Right Lane: Richard Penland Runs 6.855/193.67, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.957/190.19, Was #13
2:02 PM This morning dawned clear and sunny, but then the clouds came in and
rain brought things to a halt at the start of the Top Dragster qualifying session.
We are just now resuming racing, with fingers crossed.
Baker nailed this one, a 1.01 60-foot time and a fairly straight pass to go to the
top (for now, anyway).
Left Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 6.719/206.70, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.697/206.51, Was #3
Right Lane: Jason Collins Runs 7.191/202.33, Now #15
Best prior run: 14.719/54.98, Was #19
Collins' car hooked up so hard the front end jump[ed in the air and then
bounced. When he pedaled, it did it again. Meanwhile, Montecalvo went right down
the left lane, cleanly.
Left Lane: Wally Stroupe Runs 6.799/203.57, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.822/203.06, Was #8
Right Lane: Bob Holzer Runs 6.775/205.29, Now #7
Best prior run: 9.001/105.23, Was #17
Two good runs here, fairly straight.
Left Lane: Ed Machacek Runs 6.739/205.01, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.828/202.52, Was #10
Right Lane: Chuck De Mory Runs 6.854/198.45, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.913/200.98, Was #15
Both cars took the long route to half track, DeMory well out of the groove,
near the wall.
Left Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.790/205.43, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.865/198.50, Was #14
Right Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 6.791/204.59, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.786/204.31, Was #9
Gahm's car was all over the first half of the left lane, a very crooked
run.
Left Lane: Angelo Alesci Runs 6.695/206.51, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.753/205.71, Was #7
Right Lane: Anthony Paone Runs 6.831/200.40, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.871/200.53, Was #15
By contrast with most prior runs, both these cars went right down the
lane.
Left Lane: John Konigshofer Runs 7.397/200.35, Now #17
Best prior run: 9.390/115.51, Was #18
Right Lane: Elijah Morton Runs 6.720/207.46, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.864/203.16, Was #15
Morton made a nice pass, fairly straight, but Konigshofer's car made a hard
right turn and he had to lift momentarily.
Left Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.680/207.13, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.676/207.23, Was #2
Right Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.597/209.01, Now #1
Best prior run: 7.958/117.34, Was #18
Wow! Great run by Wilson, a career-best ET. Miller's run was okay too, but
not in the same class.
Left Lane: Tom Lee Runs 12.010/70.86, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.699/206.94, Was #6
Right Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.733/205.76, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.718/206.23, Was #7
Lots of shake in Lee's lane, forcing him to slow immediately.
Right Lane: Jerry Yeoman Runs 6.753/205.24, Now #10
Best prior run: 10.428/73.18, Was #19
Final car and Yeoman does a good job of driving through initial looseness to
salvage a mid-field position.

Right Lane: Tom Lee Runs 6.667/207.70, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.699/206.94, Was #6
10:02 PM It's late and it's cold, but the track is dry and we're ready for a
"Night of Fire" in front of a surprisingly large, obviously hardy Canadian crowd.
The bump time is Chuck DeMory's 6.854.
Yeoman broke on the burnout. Lee makes a nice, straight run and moves right in
behind Gene Wilson on the ladder.
Left Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.719/206.51, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.718/206.23, Was #7
Right Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.660/207.61, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.676/207.23, Was #4
Rice's car was all over the first half of the lane and he still came up just
a thousandth short of his prior best. Miller made a nice, straight run and pushed
Lee down a spot.
Left Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.616/209.59, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.597/209.01, Was #1
Right Lane: John Konigshofer Runs 6.684/204.08, Now #5
Best prior run: 7.397/200.35, Was #19
Wilson made a nice run, but it was Konigshofer who improved, enough to bump
DeMory. Now it's Anthony Paone on the bubble at 6.831.
Left Lane: Jason Collins Runs 14.319/56.22, Now #19
Best prior run: 7.191/202.33, Was #19
Right Lane: Angelo Alesci Runs 6.629/205.76, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.695/206.51, Was #6
Collins' Probe turned hard right on the launch, almost crossing the
centerline. Nice pass by Alesci to move up behind Wilson on the ladder.
Left Lane: Bob Holzer Runs 6.767/203.38, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.775/205.29, Was #12
Right Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 6.651/207.46, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.697/206.51, Was #7
Montecalvo's Cavalier made a big move toward the wall on the launch and he
drove through it nicely to save the run.
Left Lane: Anthony Paone Runs 6.847/202.06, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.831/200.40, Was #16
Right Lane: Carl Baker Runs 6.651/193.54, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.671/208.33, Was #6
Paone loses a hundredth, but Baker makes a nice move up the ladder with a
move in the other direction.
Left Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 19.589/38.28, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.786/204.31, Was #13
Right Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.729/206.23, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.790/205.43, Was #14
Holbrook's car shook and turned right. Gahm improved nicely to move away
from the bottom of the field.
Left Lane: Chuck De Mory Runs 6.832/202.93, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.854/198.45, Was #17
Right Lane: Wally Stroupe Runs 13.996/69.98, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.799/203.57, Was #15
DeMory was bumped earlier in the session and did a good job of handling the
tricky left lane, but came up 0.001 short of the bump time. Stroupe shook hard and
shut it down early.
Left Lane: Elijah Morton Runs 9.554/97.76, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.720/207.46, Was #9
Right Lane: Ed Machacek Runs 6.742/205.01, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.739/205.01, Was #11
So far the left lane has kept everyone at bay, the first half of the lane
much looser than the right lane.
Left Lane: Richard Penland Runs 12.653/66.47, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.855/193.67, Was #18
Penland tackled the tough left lane and the lane won, Penland's car
chattering the tires and shaking hard.
That's it, Wilson stays on top and will race Paone in round one, Konigshofer the
only driver who managed to bump into the field in this final session.

(L) Dwayne Rice ('99 Pontiac Firebird) 0.509 6.834 204.68
11:47 AM Here we go with eliminations, the three-day struggle with the
weather still under way - the top end of the track is shrouded in fog, so we can't
see the cars once they cross the finish line.
Morton's car did a big sashay
to the left on the launch and he drove through it for the win anyway. Margin of
victory = 0.113 seconds (approximately 34 feet).
(W) John Konigshofer ('98 Ford Probe) 0.494 6.659 210.08
(L) Brian Gahm ('01 Ford Mustang) 0.512 8.743 104.43
More launch pad swerving here, both cars bellying toward the centerline.
Gahm had to back off, but Konigshofer drove through it smoothly for the win.
(W) Tom Lee ('00 Ford Mustang) 0.506 6.618 209.25
(L) Ed Machacek ('01 Pontiac Firebird) 0.451 6.745 206.51
Machacek did a great job on the line, but Lee had the ponies in his Mustang
to run him down and win by a Margin of victory = 0.072 seconds (approximately 22
feet).
(W) Ron Miller ('01 Pontiac Grand Am) 0.543 6.639 208.28
(L) Jerry Yeoman ('01 Pontiac Firebird) 0.562 6.628 207.85
There's nothing wrong with the left lane, Miller winning here on a holeshot,
the margin of victory = 0.008 seconds (approximately 2 feet).
(W) Bob Holzer ('00 Pont Firebird) 0.217 6.714 207.46
(L) Carl Baker ('01 Mercury Cougar) 0.000(R) (Broke)
Baker left before the tree and then his engine went silent. Holzer advances
to face Miller next round, Miller with lane choice.
(W) John Montecalvo ('01 Chevy Cavalier) 0.520 6.667 207.94
(L) Chris Holbrook (Luckett-Bohanan '01 Ford Mus0.464 6.822 204.49
The winner here faces Lee in round two. Holbrook was away first, but
Montecalvo ran him down to win by a Margin of victory = 0.099 seconds
(approximately 30 feet). He will not have lane choice against Lee, however.
(W) Angelo Alesci ('01 Chevy Cavalier) 0.458 6.613 209.01
(L) Wally Stroupe ('01 Pontiac Grand Am) 0.494 6.769 204.35
Alesci had a great leave and his best run of the weekend to win easily, also
easily earning lane choice against Konigshofer in round two.
(W) Gene Wilson (Don Smith '00 Mercury Cougar) 0.486 6.585 209.69
(L) Anthony Paone ('97 Chevy Camaro) 0.347(R) 6.848 202.33

choice against Morton next round.

(L) Bob Holzer ('00 Pont Firebird) 0.000(R) (Broke)
5:46 PM Holzer was unable to repair his car for this round, so Miller got a
tuning pass. Miller made a fairly straight pass, with no tire shake, to record his
best ET and speed of the weekend.
(W) Tom Lee ('00 Ford Mustang) 0.528 6.650 208.62
(L) John Montecalvo ('01 Chevy Cavalier) 0.000(R) (Broke)
Chevy vs Ford, a classic matchup. But it was a disappointment, Montecalvo
shutting off after the burnout with an oil leak. lee made a straight, clean pass,
but off his qualifying pace a few hundredths.
(W) Angelo Alesci ('01 Chevy Cavalier) 0.496 6.612 208.62
(L) John Konigshofer ('98 Ford Probe) 0.426 6.839 195.10
Okay, Ford vs Chevy again, the winner facing Lee in the semifinals. Will it
be Ford-Chevy or Ford-Ford in round three? It will be Chevy-Ford, Konigshofer
sawing the tree down and his car then doing a bit of a dance, losing the advantage
quickly. Alesci went by before the 330-foot marker and ran away for an easy win.
He will have lane choice against Lee.-
(W) Gene Wilson (Don Smith '00 Mercury Cougar) 0.503 6.587 209.88
(L) Elijah Morton ('99 Ford Probe) 0.431 23.289 28.90
Morton left first by a big margin, but immediately shook hard and then his
engine went silent. Wilson made a very nice run, just 0.001 second behind the
World ET record. he has lane choice against Miller in the semifinals.

(approximately 7 inches). Lee got away first and led to 1,000 feet, ahead by 0.028
seconds at that marker, but got out of shape on the top end, slowed, and Alesci
went by in the lights for the whisker-thin win.
(W) Gene Wilson (Don Smith '00 Mercury Cougar) 0.450 6.587 209.88
(L) Ron Miller ('01 Pontiac Grand Am) 0.344(R) 6.654 208.04

we are far from finished.
